"ISIS, the Ebola of people" is the most 2015 phrase I think I've ever heard lol
Ah, those simpler times, eh?
thanks to last week tonight for doing this, and making these videos available to everyone because sadly, many of the topics are still very relevant
That might be the point
Actually the NCAA is set to pay college athletes beginning next month and video games are paying college athletes now
They all got paid 14000 players over the past decade or so
And now they get paid. It's nice to see an old piece have a positive follow-up.
one of the ONLY ones i’ve seen of these new uploads having had a positive outcome in the years since, what a shame.
Feels like a "Holy Shit! A situation improved!" followup webisode would be in order.
This is true. However, because of the lack of guidance and regulation as to _how_ colleges pay them, there are now NUMEROUS systems that have been created all over the country to limit the amount that they get paid as much as possible, making it _very_ difficult for prospective students to "cross shop" schools based on the offers they receive because the fine print that goes along with each and every one of them can be completely different. Even finding out exactly how much some of the most high profile college players make can be extremely difficult, if not impossible in some cases.
Although, when all is said and done, it cannot be denied that even with all of these new flaws and complications, it is an undeniable improvement upon the previous system of universally prohibiting _any_ form of income or benefits to these players, who work so hard under incredible pressure, in part, for our casual entertainment.
I highly recommend that anyone who watches college sports, or is considering participating in it, check out at least a couple of the many podcast episodes that have been made regarding this subject. If you're interested, the podcast "The Wild World of Money in College Football" by The Daily (from The New York Times) is a good one, and then I'm pretty sure that either the Vox or Wendover Productions TH-cam channels have made a video or two on the subject as well.
a rare one ahahah... life does this sometimes
Actually, while they do get paid now, it's mostly only the most desirable players that get a fair amount, and it is very, very difficult for students to cross shop schools based on offerings because each of the schools did different things to make sure they were paying the students as little as they could possibly get away with.
This might be one of of 3 out of 200 odd episodes with a happy ending for the main story.
I want that kitty cat poster, "F*** you, f*** me & f*** everybody.".
Same
So print it off?
@@TheRealSkeletor have it as my wallpaper.
The single "woo" was my fave part
yeah, at the mention of players not being paid 😑 i can't stand woo girls
@@pennyblush98 couldn't care about that. I don't think there should be any money in it
I just need to share my feelings about the theme song the production chose for this show, it's amazing. In my life as a viewer, only two themes could give me goosebumps... The one from Mythbusters and this one of Last Week Tonight. As a man working in music production I need to say the choice for this Valley Lodge song could not be better.
The theme from Taskmaster does it for me too
Watched this yesterday. Like watching old John Oliver and comparing the problems of a decade ago with today. It's striking when he goes over Israel and Palestine
Where did you watch it hbo max took off all seasons except the new ones
@@spiralentree737yeah it bugged me so much i can’t watch the crt anymore episode anymore
@@elliotoliverr tbh, I'm a pirate. Hit the net. Message boards, and clique communities. You and @Spiralentree737
@@spiralentree737why did they do that?
Israel and Palestine have been at it for thousands of years. That's not going to change over the course of a decade.
Ah, "stoo-dent ath-oh-leets"... Yes, that's mighty fine good sir! So if I call my slaves "stoo-dent ath-oh-leets" I won't have to pay them, right?
Gotta love South Park
Would you happen to know the Episode ?

John Oliver is an outstanding personality that throws the truth square into your face ! Remember America he's an immigrant to America like your own family ! Respect 💯💛! Why is America great ? We're built on immigrants like him ! ❤
I mean it isn't great. And it's built on Natives' c o r p s e s. But otherwise, yes.
Man, that Brazil story sure looks different nowadays. In hindsight, we should've never kicked Dilma out.
I get he should have been held accountable, but. I also get what you're saying, too.
Balsenaro was a sociopath.
I'm worried if we kick out our prime minister, who does have his issues... we may have to deal with our own Bud light version of what you guys went through
Dilma did nothing
Now that we’ve gone through the ultra-right hell, I feel like it’s safe to say Dilma was alright…
we just had to endure 7 years of fascism, were fine lmao
The ncaa part hits hard today because those college players can make millions and be bought by the biggest schools and its not even fair anymore
Its only the star players too so there is still players starving at night while their teammate is balling out of control
I nominate "LWT March Sadness" for most realistic video game of 2024🏆
Thank you for another full episode from the back catalogue from an active HBO customer. 🧡💛🧡
Update: Players can profit off their name, image, and likeness as of 2021, and pending current litigation, could be paid professionals in the near future. I love college sports, but eat shit, NCAA!
just what the FUCK was the context for the news clip "i do not need lactation services"
Trashing Obamacare
Im a simple man: I see a foreigner talking about Brazil, I click and watch
I'm too, my friend. Remembering the good old days of Lava Jato kk
BRAZIL MENTIONED 🎉🎉
Welcome to Costco, I love you
Brought to you by burger king
Absolute legend! This guy never misses
Bless you John Oliver and friends
Ouch, that bit about Dilma did not aged well as we're painfully aware... Thanks for the old shows, you are completely insane (in a good way, i mean) in a lot of them :) :) :)
The Brazil part is still going to upset so many Brazilians watching it for some many different reasons 😂😂😂
Yep
i just found out its not funny when its your country... Roussef was taken down by sexism and far-right movements that later elected Bolsonaro
it's 8 am here and already the whole episode is up. Thank you LWT ❤
not the first time drugs became 'accidentally' legal in erie
I think they need to do an update on the ncaa since they (athletes) are going to start getting paid and the whole issue on name, image and likeness. Sorry if anyone said this in the original video/post.
Please put your full series playlists in release order
Life would have so much less meaning without Sir John Oliver.
The Hostus Mostus.
Not Sir. He turned down the knighthood.
I enjoyed the Bob Murray episode, but only because I worked in coal, met Bob a few times… I know his bullshit. And everything John Oliver called him out for was true and much deserved…
However, I don’t trust John Oliver. He reminds me of another Steve Colbert. And that guy is straight up lib material
Oooph... I went to Clemson and am currently a Clemson football fan... I’ve never heard the Dabo quote. That’s upsetting. 😣
Today, international companies can explore oil paying ZERO taxes. How? Some update from CHATGPT-4: Operation Car Wash (Lava Jato), which started during Dilma Rousseff's government, uncovered extensive corruption in Brazil. The U.S. DOJ was involved through evidence sharing and legal assistance, but allegations of illegal cooperation emerged. Critics argue that some exchanges bypassed formal channels, suggesting political bias and potential breaches of Brazilian sovereignty. Additionally, Judge Sérgio Moro participated in the DOJ's Bridges Project, which involved training in the U.S. This raised concerns about bias and improper influence on his judicial decisions, with the lack of transparency fueling suspicions.
Joh Olive reign supreme
They could destroy it by letting the players be drafted after high school. And provide them an education while playing. Get all that 1% into the pro league and let those colleges with players who’s not going to make the pros. Let’s see how those sponsors like that.
Things can change if it affects the bottom line. Sad but true.
And yet you can literally get a job at college food courts, TAs, dorms, etc.
This show really made a difference. The NCAA has overturned their no-income-for-student-player rule and also has been sued and settled for anti-trust lawsuit.
"The NCAA and its leagues announced their intention to enter into a multibillion-dollar agreement to settle three pending antitrust cases.[143] In doing so, the NCAA will pay more than $2.7 billion in damages over ten years to more than 10,000 past and current athletes.[143]" -Cited from Wikipedia
Deposing Dilma opened up space for Bolsonaro, the Trump of the tropics. I love you, John Oliver, but yeah, that sukked really bad, sir.
In what world does a televised, for-profit sporting event count as "amateur"? I've seen in the comments they apparently get paid now, but the fact this was ever legal is wild
The world that includes the Olympics, apparently, but I agree.
The athletes aren't getting paid by the NCAA but rather the NCAA allowed them to sell their own likeness or at least make money in some capacities.
It took ten years to force the NCAA to change, but this show had to have been a catalyst for that change to occur!
*Looks at a coach calling 'a fair pay for fair wages' entitlement*
*Proceeds to utter a series of curse words that HBO would bleep*
I love this show :)
regarding NCAA profits and amateur athletes where do you stop? lets pay high school athletes, or kids in grade school.
You stop when the athletes are too young to be professionals, and at that point, instead of paying them, you have to demonetize their performance altogether. No one should be making money off beating up a 16-year-old's knees. 18+, they get to sell their knees if they want, and they should get paid. But younger than that, it's exploitation whether they get paid or not.
We stop when the organization organizing the game aren't generating revenue numbers that have more than one comma in it.
I agree, so much greed, evil, and corruption in sports but actually everywhere, anyplace for whatever reason.
It’s called ‘miauw miauw’ because it smells like ammonia.
Oh No! My poor, sweet, subscription feed. Ah well, could be worse :)
Can't imagine an alternate universe of Slam Dunk or Kuroko no Basuke involving everything happened inside NCAA.
Ty
Hey Fiskars; how about 'the cutting of the net brought to you by Fiskars'?
17:00 love this clip. Whose coach is this lol
I am glad there has been a movement to pay student athletes. They also did and do get paid via scholarships that are tens of thousands over tuition room and board. Not sure how this wasn't talked about.
10:25 why is that woman in the audience "Whoo!"ing that??
Meow Meow Beanz changed irish drug history
It's British Daddy time!! 🎉🎉😅🇬🇧🇬🇧
Okay, but a game where you go to school but also play sports would be amazing. I'd play the crap out of a game like that.
Like Fire Emblem Three Houses where there's a school section, then you go out and do your Turn Based Strategy gameplay.
I never heard of the word Petrobras before, so when I saw it on screen, I thought I was reading petro and bras put together and I half expected John Oliver to make a joke about gas and bras. Gas-powered bras?
was that john bailey doing the first ever honest game trailer?
I thought this was a current episode at first. I had it on in the background and with all the crazy in brazil right now, and the lack of rights for student athletes, it could be...
Brilliant!
So you mean...history repeats...
oh cool they started putting the original airdate
interesting to see how the show used to be as opposed to how it is now
I was watching this episode until realize that is from 2015. The funny fact is that we still facing the “bribery” issues with the same gov here…as you said they erased the memory of Brazilian people with MIB gadget. By the way you can sound the “palenaço” again!
"We start with I.S. I.S., the Ebola of people"
That is the most 2015 thing I think I've ever heard.
When are the new episodes coming for the latest season?
it'll probably be a while since they're releasing one season every week that they're not airing a new episode
Meow Meow = Cheesing
Idk if Cheese is THAT addictive
@stoodmuffinpersonal3144 it's a South Park reference. But cheese is very delicious.
Yeah just like Jim Thorpe they took him out because he got a free lunch and still nobody has ever broken his records you need to be in the Hall of Fame
I never understood why sports are connected to education in the first place... well, I get having HS and college teams for people looking for fun, but if we are talking about people trying to make a living from it by getting into the NBA: (1) They should be paid. (2) It shouldn't require attending a college (although great if they do that too with their money paid).
So an NCAA player is considered an amateur, except that time the guy made a 1 million dollar shot at an NBA event and they refused to pay him because he played college basketball and was considered a professional? Makes sense.
Wait, what?! I mean the rule was probably that you can't be a member of the NCAA or have ever played to be eligible for the contest. Which that's valid... but jesus.
what is the point of studing other things at the same time?
There's a HUGE difference between a scholarship to, say, Alabama and one to Harvard. Perhaps the NCAA should put a dollar value on playing and then pay or charge the difference.
I wish the game existed ;)
Coaches get more than college presidents. Millions of dollars and the students can't eat on Sunday........ Go figure. But Dabo doesn't want the hunger to be entitled .....
They may get some money now, but still not protected against injury....
What is that, a toffee making pot from Neiman Marcus?!? That’s a helluva(n)* elite first world type brand new shiny ass pan set to bang together in solidarity with a grass roots protest of the people against corrupt politicians, Last Week! Should have curb alerted a grime-caked Farberware pot from 123rd street-you know, REALLY committed to the bit.
*LMAO(the irony is not lost on me)
Dilma was clean
Providing the E and season is not enough. Saying this is 9 days is deceiving. Provide the original date that this showed to allow for relevance in a proper time line.
Finally this appears to be changing
21:50 Damn, that’s more than triple what my Boomer Dad makes as a partner at a law firm.
I'm in the top 100
I look forward to this show !!!!1
I feel like u could give the student athletes .0001 percent of the profits from March madness, and everyone would still make millions of dollars.
Now students are millionaires before they even enter the league.... times really have changed
13:15 I’m gonna need like 42 of those #CatPosters for my F.R.I.E.N.D.S. 🐱
??
17:11 ?
@@francisbarpgood catch, thx! ^_^ so I could come back to it and giggle hehe. Not the first time my timestamp lagged..I might need to stop watchin things at 2x speed >.>
And of course we have NIL and they just lost the case, so they will be paying the students.
advanced swahili courses?
The average NCAA player still don’t get paid. Unless your the few who can make money on their brand and likeness.
I love that athletes now get paid, and NOW, they're going to be paid directly by the schools via a new ruling. Just goes to show how much BS was going on a decade ago and beyond.
Current year Oliver
Uhhhh NIL money?
28:36 did he get paid for that though? 🤨
Awesomeness
The biggest joke here is calling EA sport games, games
Mark Emmert; Proof the uncanny valley effects real humans...if you extend the definition of human to Include Mark Emmert.
I would love to see him cover the difference in compensation for male vs female sports. I know people say they aren’t as interesting, but I think it can be argued that they could be if there was the potential of a higher earning career. Of course female athletes aren’t going to be as invested when the potential of a lucrative career is practically nonexistent, and sports are expensive hobbies. We are missing out on so much talent because we only ever see the very small subgroup of female athletes that come from families with expendable incomes. Professional sports are investments, and the risk vs reward are far more risky in women’s sports.
I have to assume there was no kid.
Soybean wind 😂
This episode makes me wonder how much hypocrisy JO is dishing out with paying his own staff ??
Here it is, 2024. Ncaa players are being paid. Dabo Swiiney said he'd leave if students fit paid to play. Dabo is still the coach at Clemson
Ok but San Diego Mexican food is the best in the U.S. 😂😂
when did oliver stop dying his hair?
I bet you they paid them to appear on the show and paid for their likeness for the duration of the bit.
They reuploaded all the old episodes so you wouldn't notice that HBO took the new palestine video down.
The games r the biggest problem in my opinion. If ur selling my likeness to a video game company u better pay me for that.
I've never heard of Nelly before watching this video.
Status quo yoyo
