I listened to the marvelous play of Chaconne by Alan Mearns keeping my breathing as low as possible while my soul wondered all over the world. Thank you so much, master Alan.
Astonishing- in interpretation and deliverance. Alan giving us a detailed explanation of his approach to trying understand and convey Bach’s intent is both revealing and incredibly inspirational.
a great idea to use Capo at 2nd fret to achieve lute sounding for JS Bach's Chaconne BWV 1004 and interesting and refreshing sounding lute music. Congratulation to Alan Mearn for this beautiful JS Bach music performance.
Incredible ❤❤❤ If Nigel North once dreamt that Bach handed him a lute, then Bach surely has brought Alan Mearns a guitar 😀🥳 Best version and performance I've ever seen or heard 👍🏽🎶🎵🎶
Such a beautiful arrangement of this piece. Thank you so much for your deep explanation at the end. You brought up so many good observations. I always enjoy your arrangements, especially the Serenata Andaluza by Falla
Beautiful! Probably the greatest piece of music ever written for a solo instrument (albeit not the guitar) in a version so different from every other one us guitarists were used to, and very appealing indeed! A triumph of spirit over matter as a musicologist once called this chaconne, in a new version (Alan already had uploaded it some time ago), played on a Hermann Hauser I that belonged to the great Julian Bream! 👏👏👏
Baroque art in general is meant to be flashy. While I love conservative 'by the book' interpretations, this is refreshing to hear. Seems like I am hearing a 'newly released' Bach piece. A living proof that classical music and innovation can co-exist.
Really good performance and arrangement! The harp - like scales and 2 string trills give a more harpsichord sound to this originally written for violin piece ✌
Enhorabuena!
Chaconne on guitar was a transcription from violin to begin with. Baroque music was supposed to be full of improvisation and ornamentation. In some way, one could argue this version may be closer to what Bach intended if he were to write Chaconne for guitar himself.
Just a thought: Bach wrote this as part of a suite for solo violin. Therefore the tension of the single note melodic line is the supreme achievement that he aimed for. Chords are used sparingly and obviously not more than four notes per chord. There is beauty and balance in that. In my opinion an enlargement of the poliphony misses the whole point of what Bach was trying to do. Nevertheless I enjoyed Jean Rondeau's harpsichord version tremendously. This version is a revelation of the possibilities of the modern classical guitar. But still... for every gain there is a loss unfortunately I think.
A lot to like and praise here for a piece I first played (quite imperfectly) 60 years ago and lived in my musical memory ever since. All the extra ornamentation was at first just unusual, but at the same time, reminiscent of the opening Aria in the Goldberg Variations. So, so far, so good. After a while, it became, to my ears, a bit annoying (not to mention, intimidating to play). I heard some wonderful dissonances brought out quite well in the arrangement. There is a bit of a issue with so much played on the upper frets, compared to the Segovia edition; not even this guitar can hide the intonation problems. Also, in the Major key section much was played near the bridge; didn't sound good to me.
Natural reverb is gorgeous and we have a beautiful sounding room with great natural ambience. We pride ourselves on no added (digital/artificial) reverb. You're welcome to visit and see for yourself!
great playing, wonderful arangement, fun to listen to, but my personal opinion is it's just too much ornamentation. Petra Polackova's version is the gold standard for Chaconne on guitar.
@@TheDouglasSeth Well, I've heard dozens of versions played by real artists on guitar, piano and other instruments. First of all, I know what I am talking about when I say it's the worst version ever - secondly, I dislike because I believe the opposite of what you said is true...
We miss Segovia performance. This performance is too boring and no dynamic at all, sound like harp, He didn't use the marvelous dynamic effects, vibrato and colorful that guitars already have. Also, the pitch one tone transported up with the guitar transporter made the sound too bright and lack of low notes. On the other hand, he exaggerated the use of ornamentation. 😖😖😖😖😖
OK fair enough that's your opinion but I'm happy to enjoy this version which takes a well trodden piece and injects an individual take on it - which I enjoy immensely.

This is one of the most astonishing and refreshing takes on Chaconne in guitar history.
Completely agree..l most creative I’ve heard since Angel Romero’s version
And without the stupid barbaric accents at the beginning that everyone does without any musical sense.
Excellent ornamentation; fine transcription; fine accuracy; thin sound production.
Speachless and in awe! Such fluidity! You made us travel to another era! Thank you!

What a fresh view! 😳👏
Esto sonó absolutamente barroco! Hermoso! Bellísimo arreglo!
"oh great, *another* chaconne!" I thought, but that was very foolish: this was incredible…
A masterpiece played on a masterpiece from the hands of a master. That was a remarkable musical journey.

The most significant reimagining of the Chaconne since Busoni! Mesmerizing

A complete virtuosic performance
Astonishing...
I had the privilege to listen to this piece live. Thank you maestro!
Wow!
.....wow.
Alan Mearns’ arrangements are always so beautiful.
Bream would have said, "Hats off gentlemen, this guitar belongs to him now."
And then some...
Bream would have said ¨ where is the Chaconne¨ buried under a thousand unnecessary ornaments and extra harmonies .

With so many ornamentations it ends up being a different work based on the Chaconne... technically incredible and with an amazing guitar.

AMAZING

Great!!!! 🎉🎉You have put a new life in this piece ❤enjoyed that a lot
Wait so Julian Bream had his initials inscribed on his guitar?
Welcome ornamentation appropriate to the period

God like cross string trills
