I tested the Viltrox and returned it, as the AF of the 33/1.4 is superior (AF C, shhoting burst, moving model).
Viltrox shows Fujifilm, how good and how silent a modern lens could be, at a very reasonable price with outstanding IQ (like the stunning 75/1.2).
In Germany, the initial price for the 27/1.2 was 599€, now there are offers for 499€. A fast and huge price drop for such an exceptionally good lens. This looks like it isn't selling as expected.
I hope Viltrox continues!
Fujifilms new XF lenses are disappointing (56/1.2 WR ...). And no roadmap any more.
Thanks for the video, Dima 🙏🏼
Interesting that the Viltrox bokeh is slightly more cat-eye shaped vs the round bokeh balls of the Fuji 🧐
Keep up the great work.
I enjoy you voice & delivery
Thank you for your support!
super helpful video as always. thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I thought the contrast in the Fuji 33mm looked better, based on the first set of images. However, depending on your budget, you probably can't go wrong with either, although for me the size and weight of the Viltrox would be limiting factor.
For me a key thing is continuous autofocus and I heard the Fuji is marginally better (although I also heard that Viltrox has a track record of good firmware to improve autofocus. I used AF-C a lot, so this is important.
I do own the Fuji 33mm and it feels like a strong, feisty lens that's rapid to autofocus. But I've no Viltrox to make a comparison myself.
Viltrox FTW! Love mine and it’s very versatile. It’s even sharper than my Sigma 18-35.
Have the 23, 27 and 33 at the moment and having a really hard time deciding which should stay and which should go.
Took all three on a trip to try to pin it down. As far as the weight of the Viltrox goes, if you have an x-t body or smaller, you also need to add the weight of an L-grip, which is essential. Extra 130g for me. For me it's more that it takes up more space in my bag and with the grip on especially.
I think the only time you really notice the f1.2 bonus is when you are closer to the subject. If you are shooting further away subject (a few metres+) then you don't notice and it's more about rendering and colours.
I like the 27 and 33 for different reasons. 33 has nicer rendering with a bit more warmth. Using the 27 I move the WB adjustment more into the red. It's also more uniform from corner to corner - so better for street and travel generally. More of a Swiss army knife.
The 27 on the other hand is sharper when used optimally. It also has swirly bokeh with busier backgrounds and flares. A character lens. Fun for a different kind of portrait against backdrops you might avoid like foliage and urban decay. A modern day Helios.
Least favourite is the 23. Great close up, but harsh bokeh often.
Thank you for sharing!
Great advice, thank you!
I had the 23 and 33 and often couldn’t decide which to take. I replaced both of them with the viltrox 27. less weight and size in my bag the with the other to and no longer switching the lenses every few minutes. The viltrox lives on my xt5 the whole time now
@@SN4YZE have you noticed any major shift in color with viltrox versus native Fuji lenses. I love Fuji colors. I’ve got my first viltrox arriving tomorrow (27mm) just trying to see how best to color match to what the Fuji lenses produce
@@davesearthproject didn’t noticed any yet. In some tests I think they noticed some small differences in color when they compare them side by side, but in reality the colors are great like with any Fuji lens
Super helpful video. In your video, you took comparison pics on a stable tripod with a stationary subject. Could you comment on how each lens' AF speed and tracking precision compare when shooting handheld with a moving subject?
Fujifilm is far superior at focus acquisition of moving subjects.
This is the video I've been waiting for - thanks Andrei. I was looking at getting one of these for the fast 50mm gap but I ended up finding a used fuji 35mm 1.4 for $450 CAD ($320 USD) so couldn't pass on that
Glad it was helpful!
I agree with another comment that a lot of Fuji owners got into the system for the size of the bodies & lenses. I own the Viltrox 13mm and it's a very sharp lens, but compact...it's not. The 27mm is a beast of a lens and tack sharp...but certainly not one I would travel with. A second problem encountered with the Viltrox lenses (and other third party lenses) is the lower value you get on trade-in vs the Fuji lenses. You'll see what I mean when you submit a lens for an appraisal to any of the major retailers. It's a real wake up call.
True re trade in, but you only pay £500 from new, so you'll only end up losing the same if not less than tge fuji own
I bought my xf33 new 2 months ago for 770€, now I only get 500€ if I would sell it. The viltrox costs around 500€ new and can be sold for around 400€ used.
I think it's splitting hairs at this point when you're at 100%. I think with a 9mm (even if it's stated 6mm, its 9mm with crop of 1.5X), to some degree this is a case of comparing New York to DC. Both on the same coast, but different cities.
I think they are both great lenses, and I have to say I'm impressed with viltrox upping its x-mount game.
The thing I did notice was that apparently, Viltrox has nervous onion bokeh, whereas Fuji's seems pretty consistent.
They are both great lenses and as I said in the video I use them for different purposes.
What recipe did you use on capturing Vaticano and Di Trevi?
Classic Chrome with +2 colour.
33 1.4! It’s all about size, in my opinion. The compact nature of Fuji products is what drew me to the system in the first place. Great video, always enjoy your content!
Fair enough! I am glad you like my videos.
Although the viltrox is bigger than the fuji lenses, theoretically on a 40 MP Fuji body you could use the 27mm viltrox to have a 40 MP 40mm equivalent, or a 20 MP 56mm equivalent with the 1.4x crop in camera, or a 10 MP 80mm equivalent with the 2x in camera crop.
Given how sharp it is I think the crops would be very usable, and because the lens has such a wide aperture, cropping to 56mm equivalent still gives you something like a f2.2 full frame equivalent depth of field which is very good.
I think this lens is a beast on a 40mp body if you want to avoid lens switches.
True, it is quite a versatile lens.
I still can’t make up my mind haha. This will be my first prime. Based on some reviews, I love the swirley bokeh of the Viltrox. But the contrast and colors of the Fuji looks great.
Right now the price is almost the same, there is not a huge gap.
Thank you for your videos. Love your content, big fan.
No matter which one you choose, you will be happy with the results. I'm glad you enjoy my videos!
@@AndreiDimaReviews I have the 33mm in my hands. :’) It’s my first prime. Loved the 50mm in full frame.
used 33mm f.14 since 2020 and new viltrox 27mm f1.2 have the same price and makes me wonder which one to get
If you already have the 33mm there is no reason to buy the Viltrox.
@@AndreiDimaReviews i mean buy used 33mm f1.4 sorry for the grammar 😂
Great review about Viltrox lens 😊bro
Thanks! 👍
Is the viltrox weather sealed
Yes
Hello Andrei I am in China and the price of them are completely different
The Fuji 33 is about 5300rmb and it is used lens
Viltrox is 3700rmb with UV brand new
Which should I choose?
Hello! I think you should get the Viltrox.
@@AndreiDimaReviews thanks!
Sharpness is not everything, fuji 33's images are more pleasant to look at. Maybe it has better fidelity.
Viltrox targeted a specific type of photographer with this lens, and for them, it is a great option. They never intended to compete with Fujifilm, in my opinion. I made this video because people asked me to, but I think these are very different lenses for different types of photographers.
Viltrox is just too big. Fuji 33mm is already the maximum size I'm able to tolerate.
Yes, it seems the Viltrox is big for some people. But overall it is not a big lens.
33 1.4 have a more "organic character'' feel to it with a nicer bokeh ,it's always in my bag. Viltrox really makes nice lens too Santa is bringing me the 13mm 1.4
Thank you for sharing!
using this lens for almost one month . good for crop Fuji sensor . But still prefer 35 mm on FF look
you have made me to choose Viltrox 27mm over Fujifilm 33 haha
Glad I could help!
Thanks for the video! In my opinion the viltrox has more character with the swirly bokeh and lens flares. Fuji seems a bit more clinical. Either way, both great lenses.
Thank you for watching! Yes, the swirly bokeh is nice, but it's something you only see when you isolate a subject. In my opinion, the 33mm f1.4 has more character because it inherits some traits from the 35mm f1.4, such as barrel distortion, which makes images pop. The LOCA and chromatic aberrations also contribute to that 'pop.' On the Viltrox lens, these aberrations are well controlled, which tends to make the image appear a bit flat and clinical. Additionally, the colors look fuller and warmer with the 33mm. However, character is subjective and depends on what you're looking for.
Viltrox too big, might as well use a full frame camera at that point and get even more detail out of the image. Have you tested autofocus hit/misses with both lens? Doesn't matter how sharp a shot is if focused is missed.
The 27mm f1.2 Viltrox is not that big, considering its performance and f-stop. Yes, I tested both lenses for many months, and the Viltrox has more keepers when it comes to AF.
you have never used it have you? you're one of those people who are so paranoid of 3rd party lenses. Also, the viltrox is not heavy unless you have some physical deficiency, it is much smaller than any 50mm f1.4 that can give comparable performance. The AF is ofc gonna be slower than the xf but for 60% of the price, it delivers 90% of the performance
@@tridinh1011 don’t need to use it. The XF F1.4 lenses are the biggest and heaviest I would go on an APSC.
If I don't already have my 33/1.4, I probably will get the Viltrox for half the price.
The Viltrox 27mm is a great lens.
Here in Turkey viltrox 27mm is more expensive than fuji 33mm, so the choice is obvious !
Thanks for the video. I'm in between the fuji 23mm 1.4 and this viltrox. I prefer the fuji colors better, but on this other video the sharpness for the viltrox is miles ahead. Now I don't know if the user cropped his images, did something dodgy to have such a big difference. What do you think? Many thanks! th-cam.com/video/Lxt4gZEWdwY/w-d-xo.htmlsi
Thank you for watching! I watched the video. It seems in some photos the 23mm f1.4 slightly missed focus. But it is true the Viltrox is sharper than most Fujifilm lenses.
@@AndreiDimaReviews Thanks so much for the feedback! I might give it a go with the Viltrox. My only concern is it's size and weight, but it seems to be incredibly sharp for a reasonable price.
I never like color rendering from Viltrox, also lack of contrast.
The 13mm, 27mm and 75mm lenses are a lot better than the first gen.
@@AndreiDimaReviews I did test the 75mm, it's a nice lens but to tight for my style of shooting, I do want to try the the 13mm tho.
Based on the comparisons from other youttube channels and especially Dustin Abbott, the viltrox takes it! it has nearly identical bokeh to the 33 despite being shorter and is half a stop brighter and definitely sharper in all areas. Size-wise the new fuji's are not that small tbh (same size as my full frame f1.8's, only the fujicrons are tiny and produce nice images at their optimal f-stops (5.6)) lastly I also think the viltrox has more character as it has swirly specular highlights when shooting foliage (like a modern day helios!) the 33 is definitely nice butt fuji lenses are severly overpriced for what they are!
Can I ask you a question? Did you watch the video?
Yup 👍 my comments are just a footnote to your comparison. Honestly, I would have purchased the Fuji if it wasn’t so grossly overpriced at the time of its release (now it's a bit cheaper). I ended up getting the viltrox despite of its size and weight and must say I am certain it was the right choice for someone like me who values image quality over weight and size...but then again your mileage may vary as they say!
Viltrox 27mm f1.2 Pro, 100%.
viltrox is too big
No, it is not too big for the delivered f Stop and high end image and built quality.
@@muttishelfer9122 agree with you because I don't mind the 13mm f1.4 that I own in the first place
Agreed. Picked up the 33mm.
Yes, too big! And for me, the difference is not worth that extra weight and size. Also, the overall style of the Fuji is prettier :-)
I love my 27f1.2 , it’s my favorite of all lenses so far even more than new23f1.4 fuji ( I love 23mm focal length so much).
Cool!
