    Noah, I always enjoy whatever herps you come upon, but your inclusion of natural beauty and critters makes your VLOGs the most entertaining and informative. Spiders, butterflies, flowers and simply the vast diversity of nature makes your work always memorable. I love how the Rat Snakes seem to become "kinky" as the traverse the terrain. Is that unique to this species or do others also become so noticeably kinky?

    • @NKFherping
      @NKFherping  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Nancy! The kinking is pretty unique to Ratsnakes, although a lot of snakes will do it to a lesser degree such as Ringnecks and Pine Snakes.

    • @nancybrown2700
      @nancybrown2700 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Noah that is what I had observed because that kink was very extreme. I always look forward to each video. Keep up the great work.@@NKFherping

    I went herping last month but haven't had the chance to go since. I'm probably not gonna bother with it anymore this year. I'm also recovering from covid and I'm still kinda weak and get tired sooner than usual. I'm glad that my appetite is starting to come back. I've lost over 20 pounds because I just don't like to eat if I get sick. I actually don't wanna gain my weight back. You had a lot of good finds.

    That last ratsnake was a black ratsnake Pantheropis Alleghaniensis grey ratsnakes usually retain their juvenile pattern where black rats get jet black as they get older. Between the scales you can kind of see their pattern but for the most part they’re solid black as adults.

    • @NKFherping
      @NKFherping  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately, taxonomy isn’t that simple. Gray Ratsnakes are now widely recognized as a full species, that is different genetically from the “black” (Eastern) Ratsnake. So even though this is a dark Gray Ratsnake, it’s still a Gray Ratsnake since genetically there are no Eastern Ratsnakes in Alabama.
      There has been a new paper published recommending Black and Gray Ratsnakes both become lumped into the “Central” Ratsnake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis), which I think is a good way to look at it since there is a wide intergrade zone between the “Black” and “Gray” phenotypes.

    • @KaotikWolff
      @KaotikWolff ปีที่แล้ว

      Black ratsnakes are found in Alabama but not typically in the southern part of the state they are typically found in northern parts of Alabama. I never meant to disprove you’re knowledge but for some reason I have a tendency to comment on things just to assert my knowledge of the topic at hand.

    Do you still often target northern pine snakes? I’ve seen a few posts on various forums of wild northern pines from north GA/AL this year, wondering if you still try for them with some regularity.

    • @NKFherping
      @NKFherping  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s about all I do, haha. Almost every video that isn’t filmed in the swamp is a byproduct of a failed Pine Snake search.

    I wonder why Grey Rats always look like they have kinks down their body on the ground? Do they sit all wiggly shaped like that?

    • @NKFherping
      @NKFherping  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s behavioral camouflage, they kink their bodies like that to break up their outline. It works well in the forest, not so much on a road.

    • @TheIndigoEclipse
      @TheIndigoEclipse ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NKFherping Well it certainly fools my eyes a bit. At first I thought it was an optical illusion due to their spot coloration, but then I realized they all just do that weird wiggle-shape. Nature is fun.
