  • I sat down & played through all 35 of these songs in one go, so there are a few stupid & annoying mistakes here & there, but that is what rehearsing is all about.
Played on my Hammond SK2 keyboard through my Leslie 3300.
    Recorded the Leslie 3300 with 2 Shure SM57 & 1 Shure BETA 52A microphones.
The piano was recorded direct out of the SK2 into Tascam 2488 MK2 Portastudio.

What a Fool ! (I am), for I have not previously considered how that enigmatic opening of this classic song was created, too often I'm just lost in the imagery of the music video and the period. Great, thank you.

wow!! i've been absolutely amazed by your videos! this song especially. recently started playing piano/organ for reggae and ska and i learn much quicker just by watching people play. would it be really cheeky if i asked for your drawbar settings? i'm finally getting my first keyboard in a few weeks (roland-vr09... cant quite afford a fancy sk2 yet) and it would be cool to know! also any good advice or links to literature to help me along my journey? keep up the good work dude!!!

      Hi Ross,
Thanks for your kind words & comments.
I`m always pleasantly surprised when people tell me how much they enjoy my playing.
Do you want the drawbar settings for this song or for other songs?.
As for advice I would say practice hard & play as much as you can in each song, (meaning playing with 2 hands to make your keyboard parts as full as possible).
Unfortunately there was no TH-cam when I started learning back in 1983, so I just had to listen to the records & try to work the parts out.
But now there is a whole wealth of information on the net, so try to watch as many videos as you can of various ska
eggae keyboard players & just thoroughly enjoy what you do !!.
I wish you lots of luck & have fun.

Thanks for getting back to us :) sorry i don't really check my mail often on here ha ha! i've been checking out a lot of your videos as you seem to be one of the few authentic players and i was hoping to find out the drawbar settings for all your tracks really.. maybe something you could include in the bio for future uploads? (i'm currently just messing round with 88000008) had my new keyboard for a few weeks now and i am completely overwhelmed with the tones i can generate at my finger tips.. i've been a guitar player most of my life but there is something completely satisfying about the sound of an organ. i'm working on a few covers at the moment of some modern reggae/ska bands which i'm planning to record and upload .. more as a documentation of progression but also in the hope of getting some pointers or abuse from the internet.. ha ha. anyhoo, thanks for the advise and inspirational videos!
      Ross

      Hi Ross,
Sorry mate, I didn`t receive a notification of your reply.
Thank you for calling me an authentic player, as that is one thing I really try to be... so my channel should be a good resource of info, as I do so much research before I cover a song, to get it as authentic as possible.
Regarding drawbar settings, i`m not surprised you are completely overwhelmed. According to Hammond, there are 253 million variations of tones you can get out of their 9 drawbar system.
So you can imagine i`ve spent many, many long hours adjusting the old drawbars trying to copy certain sounds, of which some I don`t want to give away. They took me too long to work out to simply give away!.
But i`m happy to share some others with you.
For this song (Ghost Town) I used-
      UPPER KEYBOARD- 88 8000 888
LOWER KEYBOARD- 80 0008 008 with a layered piano sound.
For most ska songs I use full organ- 88 888 8888.
Martin Stewart of Bad Manners is an excellent Hammond organist & he used a wide range of sounds ranging from 88 888 8888, to a `creamy` sound of 00 823 0000, and 88 800 0000,amongst others.
      Yeah 88 000 0008 is a good one.
You just gotta keep playing about & you`ll find loads of settings you`ll love.
It`s just very difficult trying (but possible) to get the same sound you love from a certain record.
Keep at it mate & maybe even get yourself a proper Leslie speaker in the future. These things really bring your organ to life!! :o)

      Hi Julie,
I`m pretty sure I was using,
      UPPER KEYBOARD- 88 8000 888
LOWER KEYBOARD- 80 0008 008 layered with piano,
with C3 chorus on both & all going through a delayed reverb (which I adjusted to try to match the tempo of the song).
      Hope this helps.
