"Are those monkeys with wings?" Yep. You absolutely have to watch one of the greatest movies ever made, which is The Wizard of Oz, from 1939. As a kid, I used to get so excited when it was broadcast on t.v. every year. No matter what was going on, I made sure to never miss it. No talk about classic movies could avoid including this legendary film. Few films in history have had the impact on generations the way Wizard of Oz did! Decades later, they did a remake, using mostly black actors, and called it simply "The Wiz." It starred Michael Jackson and Dianna Ross, among others. You should definitely react to both of these great movies!
100 percent. If you haven't seen it then next week for sure.

@@glenngotling657 The winged monkeys didn't bother me and neither did the witch. What terrified me was the tornado. To this day tornadoes terrify me, and I'm in my 60s.

The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie of all time. I used to watch it every year with my Mom too. It was an event in our house. The Wiz is also a staple in my house. Love it!

This movie is required viewing every year for Christmas, so many good lines.
We've always had it on during the 24hr marathon on Christmas Eve and Christmas day, every year since FX started showing it. It could possibly be the most watched movie in the world, ever. I'd love to know the numbers.
Turner Broadcasting does it with two other movies now they did a 24-hour marathon of Beetlejuice on Halloween they just finished 24-hour marathon of elf this Friday
TNT does 24 hours of a Christmas Story every single year. It starts at noon on Christmas Eve and ends at noon on Christmas day. I watch it for hours. Literally my favorite Christmas movie EVER!
This movie had a rather small budget but when Darren Mcgavin (the father) read the script, he decided to do it for free. Great decision on his part! He was the star of "The Night Stalker" series when I was a kid. The creator of "X-files" credits that show for inspiring "X-Files".
Jack Nickleson allegedly really wanted to be the Old Man.
I always loved the parallels between the father getting a cheap lamp from the promise of a grand prize and Ralphie falling for an ad disguised as a secret coded message for children. The apple doesn't fall too far but at least Ralphie was able to dismiss it once he saw through it.
Hey, let's keep it a buck - that lamp was AWESOME. Also, "the soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window" is one of the best lines in the history of the English language. 😆
In all the times I've seen this movie, and there have been many, not once did I ever consider the parallel. It makes sense though!

I think what folks don’t understand is that Ralphie’s parents both lived through the depression and through all the rationing during the second world war. The man was just happy to have won something and I can respect that.
Ralphie found out how his mom felt, when she made his wear that onesie.

The look on Ralphie Parker's (Peter Billingsley) face when Santa said that was priceless.
Also, this story was based on the actual childhood experience of the screenwriter, who was also a popular radio personality in the '70s. He's also the narrator of the movie.

What's wonderful about this film is, even though it's set in 1940, it pulls the heart strings of everyone and makes them nostalgic for their own childhood Christmas memories. So much has changed yet so much remains the same. Peter Billingsley did a phenomenal acting job. We watch this film every Christmas along with "It's a Wonderful Life", "Elf" and "Fred Clause".
My dad did the exact same thing for me when I was about 10. Hid it behind the tv stand and everything. Probably my most memorable Christmas ever. I think he was more happy watching me open it than I was! And I was over the moon
This one's easily my 2nd favorite Christmas film (1st is It's A Wonderful Life). The Old Man getting Ralphie his gift actually makes me tear up now, it's touching that this grumpy old man we've seen throughout the film was always watching his kids without them knowing. It's genuinely beautiful to watch!
Grumpy? No one who derives pleasure from changing a tire can be called "grumpy." It's a rule.

16:40: the Leg Lamp is one of the classic parts of the film! Gaudy as it is, my mom wanted one for YEARS. Once it was able to be had online, I got one for her. Her response? She screamed! "THIS IS THE BEST MOTHER'S DAY PRESENT EVER!!!" 😄🥰

I found one at an old hardware store in Kansas, so I bought it, my girlfriend at the time hated it.
Long story short, my relationship with the lamp lasted longer than the one with her.
I saw a little leg lamp just like that on sale at the mall before Christmas.
Presenting your mom with such a major award like that? That’s wonderfully thoughtful!

This movie was based on the life of Jean Shepherd who is portrayed by the boy named Ralphie in the movie. By the way, for most people my age (73) this was our childhood, too.
Allegedely, in the Chinese Restaurant at the end, they did not tell the Mom what was going to happen in the scene. So all of her reactions are genuine, especially when the owner cuts the duck head off. Just makes it even more funnier to me, when I found that out.
Just so you know Ralphie is in Elf. He is the elf that tells Buddy "Youre not a cottonheaded ninnymuggins" :)

Thank you sooo much for watching this. The scene where Ralphie gets his gun brings a tear to my eye every time. It’s because of how it was in those days. The father’s role in the family was VERY different than it is today. He was responsible for the family’s day to day survival as the sole breadwinner, and consequently had little part in child raising, short of disciplining. This shows in that Ralphie tried appealing to EVERYONE for the gun. He went to absurd lengths. And the one person who he had the best shot with, his father, never even entered his mind. Yet his father was once a son himself…Just so very touching.

I saw this as a kid in the theater when it was first released. I have seen it over a hundred times since. I can quote nearly every word.
And I never once realized that Ralphie went to everyone but the one person who give him his treasured gift!

Since this movie came out long ago, and since it’s been so popular…
They started selling that leg lamp in all different sizes, including small to use as tree ornaments.
It’s been in all the stores and available online for the past 20 years. That’s why you recognize it.
Well the lamp doesn't count if you don't win it.
Thing to remember is this movie is from Ralphy's point of view mostly, so not just the imaginary things are in his head. for example, when they are leaving the store, if you pay attention, in the background the Santa and elves are actually being very nice to the kids....it was all the intimidation and build up in his head making the Santa seem mean.
The greatest movie of the Christmas season! I met the little brother Randy (Ian Petrella) a few years ago and he autographed my copy of the movie. Fun fact: the actors who played Ralphie and Randy got to keep all the Christmas gifts that were under the tree!

This film was written by and based on a book by the great radio personality, Jean Shepherd. I remember as a teen listening to Jean Shepherd on the radio at night where he would talk about anything and everything. He was also a ham radio operator and talked sometimes about that hobby. The great Jean Shepherd. He's the narrator in the movie. He also does a cameo. He's the guy who tells the kids to get to the back of the line when they're waiting for Santa.
WOR AM 710, NY. Got to meet Shep at a book signing as a HS freshman in 1971.
The "Leg Lamp" is iconic in this movie. I'm sure you've seen it in memes, as Christmas ornaments, etc. The house where this was filmed used to be rentable for Christmas Eve. It includes the famous Leg Lamp in the window and other furnishings from the film.
So, since you’re wearing an Elf shirt , Ralphie played the head elf in the Elf movie. He’s the one that was checking on Buddy to see how many etch a sketch’s he’d made. Just a little fun fact if you will lol Hope y’all had a great Christmas! And happy new year!

The sequel came out this year. Called, " A Christmas Story Christmas ". Ralphie is grown up with his own family. He and all of the other kids are played by the same actors. Great film.
I'm so glad that they made a sequel! I laughed just as hard as I do every year watching the original! Great to see most of the original cast as well!!! ❤️❤️❤️

One of my favorite parts is how the Mom picks up and comforts Ralphie and leaves the bully lying there bleeding and crying.
This was a family favorite growing up and I grow to love it more every year. One Christmas, about five years ago, as I handed out gifts from under the tree, I found a box addressed to my sister from “Aunt Clara.” I instantly got the reference; my sister proceeded to open the present while also trying to figure out who Aunt Clara was and what the reference was until she unveiled a bright pink rabbit onesie. My dad (who the suit was from) said every single one of the mom’s lines in the movie and we never laughed harder. We even made my sister go upstairs and change into it 😂😂😂😂

How have you avoided this movie?!?! It plays on so many channels 24 hours straight on Christmas. It’s my favorite.
Yeah, real hard to believe that anyone in Western Hemisphere, let alone, two parents with young kids has never seen this. Hate to call them out, since this one of my favorite channels, but this one really strains credulity.
Y'all need to use your imagination, realize young folk watching TV all the time is a lot less of an addiction than it used to be, and develope the capacity to recognize sincere reactions from not-so-sincere ones. (Sadly, i've been advised that most people are NOT good judges of character)
She, at least, recognized the leg lamp. What's funny is if I had seen a leg lamp without knowing the context I would be curious about it. I would love to have known what she was thinking when she saw the leg lamp without knowing the movie reference.

@@mortimerbrewster3671 I have a replica of that leg lamp and I put it up in my front window with Christmas lights every year for Christmas. Not very many of the younger generations get the reference but most people 30 and up get it and seem to love it.
This movie was on every single Christmas....They used to have "24 hours of a Christmas Story" every xmas holiday where it would just play over and over each year....
Im old but not that old, but that timeframe would of been my fathers and mothers era of growing up....so it still always felt relatable.
Even if that era is completely out of your range though being a kid with all the hope of getting that one present is relatable to almost all of us if your family was able too.....and everyone can relate to the wild tales inside a little kids head no matter boy or girl..,,,it truly has something for everyone which is why it became an instant classic.....great movie and I imagine even a hundred years from now the above will always be relatable no matter the time you are alive on this planet.....not many like this movie which is a shame.
You two are great and im glad you got to relive some of your childhood through this movie....thats what its all about...taking you back to what real magic felt like as a child if only for a short time!

One of the most perfectly made Christmas movies ever! Every little thing about this film, no matter how subtle, is just fantastic. The cast, the acting, the sets, the narration, the nostalgia factor, everything! Peter Billingsley as Ralphie did such a great job. One of my fave parts is when he snapped and beat up the bully Scott Farkas. The way his expression gradually changed from sadness to utter fury in a span of about 7 seconds is just amazing to me. So glad you watched this one!

My Mama was born in the mid 1930's & I knew a lot of this movie would resonate with her. She was reluctant to watch it, but I won the debate. It wound up being a favorite for us both to enjoy every year. Thank you for sharing it with us. 💖

Elf is also my favorite. Fun fact alert: Peter Billingsley who plays Ralphie in "A Christmas Story", is also in "Elf". He plays Ming Ming (the elf that asks Buddy how many Etch-a-sketchs he made). 😊. By the way, I live in Michigan, & yes sometimes we have to dress like that to stay warm. We're about to get a blizzard this weekend. Local authorities are saying stay home. If we do go out, we'll have to dress like Randy in this movie. My husband was curious one day & looked up when the radio show Little Orphan Annie was on air. It ran for 9 yrs. from 1932-1941. The character Ralphie was 9 yrs. old. in this movie. My husband's grandpa will be turning 90 on Dec. 26th. If Ralphie was born in 1932, then he would be 90 yrs. old just like my husband's grandpa.
You *MUST* watch "While You Were Sleeping". It has Sandra Bullock & Bill Pullman in it. You will laugh so hard! 😂 It's one of my favorites. 😁

As mentioned by a number of others in this column, you really should watch "It's a Wonderful Life" before this Christmas season is over. It's been a Christmas staple for over 70 years.
The movie is dearest to those in their 70's and 80's as it brings back their childhood memories. I am in my 60's and can still relate to much of it especially since I grew up in NW Indiana where the film was set, but I think much of it is lost on today's generations.
I was third of three boys, and that tackle on the stairs makes me laugh out loud every time! When I see it, I miss my brothers so much. No matter how many Christmas times go by with me being the only one left, that tackle takes me back to a better time. Weird huh? What things trigger memories! I really enjoyed seeing you react to this classic! Happy holidays!
The most underrated character is Randy. He has the funniest laugh, and his whining cry kills me every time. I enjoyed your reaction, as always! I had to add this: the leg lamp represented the Old Man's pride in finally WINNING! Give the man his minor victory!

Many people don't know @ 9:12 the kid, second from the far right and the kid in the window (behind Amber) during the Tongue Flag-Pole scene, is the kid who played "Lupus" in the "Bad News Bears" movies.

This is my favorite Christmas movie, right next to IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. The reason I like A CHRISTMAS STORY so much is because I could relate to Ralphie. From the over active imagination, to having my mouth washed out w/soap for using a cuss word (not by my parents but by 1 of my grandmas), to finally getting fed up w/a bully & knocking the stuffing out of him, wanting a BB gun, & then getting it but having to share w/my brother. O, & the ricochet that Ralphie got hit with. Well..., I fired it & let's just say it didn't hit me. My brother got hit in about the same spot as Ralphie & he yelled "Ow, u shot my eye out!" @1st, I actually did believe I had, but then my brother showed me where he got hit. Boy, was I relieved! Anyway, glad that u guys finally got to see this 1, & that u enjoyed it. I enjoyed watching u react to it.😊

@TJP 81 Thanks for the suggestion. I've seen IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE a bunch myself, but I still watch it @ least once a year. I have seen many old/older movies a bunch & I still enjoy them. Some examples: ANGEL'S WITH DIRTY FACES, THE WIZARD OF OZ, EASTER PARADE, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, BEN HUR, SOUND OF MUSIC, GREASE & so on. Usually, if I get bored w/a movie I stay away from it for awhile, & then return to it sometime later.😊
My brother used to shoot at me, but I was smart. I hid behind the butane tank.
Maybe it was the 22 he was shooting at me with now that I think of it.

My husband and I quote this movie to each other every chance we get. The random times that he’s managed to yell “you use up all the glue ON PURPOSE” at me takes me out every time! 😂

One thing I really like about this movie is the natural way the kids play their roles. Yes, it's a silly movie and yet they are all so natural. Kids will be kids.
There's a new one that's pretty cute too called A Christmas Story Christmas.
Just saw it last night. Its not as funny but in some ways it more touching to me especially if you are older. Really good sequel.
I like to think Randy filled his mom in on what was going on with the bully and she understood why Ralphie lashed out the way he did. That's why she covered for him with his dad. The fact that she had to literally shake him out of it and how he started crying uncontrollably afterwards showed something made him do that. And I relate so much to this as an adult. I cry when I get angry and feel bad about it afterwards.
I always felt like the look between the dad and mom during that part was saying “I know something happened, do I need to get involved?” and “no, it’s all taken care but I’ll tell ya later.”

"It's A Wonderful Life" is the greatest Christmas movie of all time. And it stars the greatest actor of all - James Stewart. Guaranteed you will love it.
You may not have noticed, but when the mom turns off the leg lamp, she says it’s to save electricity. Yet every other light in the house is left on! So funny
Glad you liked this nostalgic take on Christmas. A Christmas Story is set in 1940, hence the Wizard of Oz references (flying monkeys).
It's one of my favorite Christmas movies but #1 above all is SCROOGED. It's a satirical masterpiece and on of Bill Murray's best movies.
I just read an article that stated A Christmas Story takes place in the mid 1950's. 🤷♀️
@sharoncromer1910 it takes place e on the early '40s. Jean Shepherd wrote another story, Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss, that tales place in the '50s. It's about 14 year old Ralphie getting a summer job and going on a family vacation.
@@Lensmaster1 It takes place in 1940 and is based on a collection of Jean Shepherd's stories called In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash from 1966 with some elements taken from another collection Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories And Other Disasters from 1971. There was a movie sequel, A Christmas Story 2, that came out in 2012 that wasn't actually based on Jean Shepherd's stories but was an original screenplay written by Nat Mauldin. However, there is another sequel that came out in 1994 called My Summer Story, with the alternative title of It Runs in the Family that was based on Shepherd's stories, again coming mostly from In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. It doesn't use any of the same cast, except for Jean Shepherd as the narrator, but it takes place the summer after A Christmas story and stars Kieran and Christian Culkin, 2 of Macaulay's younger brothers, and the parents are played by Mary Steenbergen and Charles Groden.
I think Jean Shepherd is an American treasure! His short stories are funny and touching.
This movie was set around 1940, which is why you saw the flying monkeys from wizard of oz (it came out in 1939)

Plus one of the best parts of this movie is that Dad (who seemed so distant and preoccupied with his own problems) was the one who knew what his son wanted. And he got it for him.

This is THE best Christmas movie ever- The whole family can watch it together!
I'll always love this one. My family went to see it in the theater -- I guess I would have been nine years old then. It was particularly nostalgic for my dad. He said this was EXACTLY like when he was growing up, in the '50s in Minnesota.

This is my favorite Christmas movie. When the kid sticks his tongue to the flag pole, his reaction was genuine because they rigged a vacuum tube to the back side of the pole and this was the first take. It was painful and he wasn't expecting it, so we got to see a very natural reaction in the scene.
The dad said he got a can of Simonize. Car polish.
The monkeys with wings were from The Wizard of Oz, one of the most popular movies of all time and had recently been released when this movie would have taken place. You need to react to this one on your channel.
I think Ralphie wins for having the best “son of a bitch” line in cinema history 😂
I absolutely adore this movie. Even though I was born in the late 50s, I can still relate to the era as if it was my own childhood.
Miracle on 34th St. as I mentioned before is the movie that makes me still believe in Santa and I’m 60 years old😂
This movie was my dad's favorite. He was from this era and said he wanted a Red Ryder BB gun too. They have a Broadway musical of this movie as well and the songs are so much fun. They have a soundtrack you can download. I know you and your kids will love. They also had a leg lamp on display. The leg lamp dance and song were hilarious! 😂 My dad would get tapes of some old radio shows and would play them for my 4 boys when they would go camping. Miss him❤️
I love that you appreciated this movie and related to so much of it. Of course it’s exaggerated because it’s from Ralphie’s memory. The whole Santa scene was from a kid’s point of view which is why Santa looks and sounds a lot nicer from a distance as the family is walking away. 😂
This movie does such an awesome job of showing how magical but also how stressful Christmas is to kids.
"A can of Simonize" is a can of car wax! Something to care for his car! There were also a number of references to the movie, "The Wizard of Oz," including the previously mentioned flying monkeys (and being from Kansas, we have our own "Flying Monkey Brewery!) as well as the witch we saw in the classroom, with the green complexion! Finally, in many cities, the only restaurants open back in the 50s through 70s were Chinese restaurants!
Since Amber likes "Elf": that Elf Ming Ming is none other than Ralphie in this movie, grown up (Peter Billingsley).
I actually saw this at the movie theater when it came out. Cracked me up! Only 4 of us in the theater. Such a great memory. I didn't even buy a ticket for this movie. It was a special double feature. We went to see Starman and ended up seeing one of the most classic Christmas films of all times for free.
Darrin McGavin whom played the father in this movie was part of a popular TV show series I watched in my youth known as the 'The Night Stalker' Series. He plays Karl Kolchak a meddling news reporter that finds himself in the middle of these fictional horror plots not only looking for a story, but as an unsung unlikely hero. I would recommend anyone to watch these serials, where you can find them on the web. There are some here on TH-cam that have even been remastered. Over the years it has become a cult classic for lovers of macabre mystery.

When you watch Elf again look out for a grown up Ralphie playing the supervisor of the toy shop. He is the elf that complains that Buddie’s production of Etch-A-Sketches is too low. He actually shows up in a lot of Christmas movies. He is also in 4 Christmas’s as an airline employee.
Not sure if someone already posted this, but Peter Billingsley who plays the cute Ralphie is also Ming Ming, one of the elves in the movie Elf with Will Ferrell, which you said was one of your favorite movies. He is the elf that helps Buddy with his self esteem at the beginning of the movie.
Darren McGavin was THE guy for horror in the early 70's with his show, Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
When I was about 9 years old I'd force myself to watch that show. Knowing ahead of time it would give me nightmares.
Other Christmas movies you absolutely need to see if you haven't yet:
* A Christmas Carol (the version starring Alistair Sim, or the Muppets' version)
* Scrooged (starring Bill Murray, a modern retelling of A Christmas Carol)
* It's a Wonderful Life (an absolute masterpiece of cinema that will hit you right in the feels!)
* Miracle on 34th Street (origin of the phrase "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus")
...and the less "conventional" choices:
* Die Hard (action/adventure)
* Gremlins (horror/comedy)

I love how you’re both clearly parents and relate to that aspect of this film while still being in touch with your inner children and being able to completely relate to the kids in this. That’s somewhat of a rare quality and the fact that you both possess it is simply wonderful!
Yes, radio heroes and decoder rings were very real, as was Ovaltine sponsorship of children’s programming. Sitting around the radio was lovely in many respects because the lack of a visual component, especially in fictional programming, caused listeners to use their imaginations in creating a mental image of whatever was going on. Although I grew up watching television in the 1970s, around 1974 my family had purchased a record album of old time radio, sort of a general omnibus of what it was like, and I began to understand, at age 8, how valuable and fun just listening to those radio shows could be and how they must have shaped life, especially for kids, during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, before television replaced radio as the primary medium in homes across the country.
For your next Christmas movie I recommend either IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) or MIRACLE ON 34th STREET (1947). They’re both two of the very best Christmas films ever made.

That was the perfect description of cabbage, and the monkeys with wings are from The Wizard of Oz, a popular movie in the '40s.
This was _the_ movie we watched every year in our household. My mom made me sit with soap in my mouth once. I think she felt bad about it, because she never had me or my brother do it again.

The actual house from this movie is in Cleveland, by the way. It was restored to the way it was in the movie and is opened to the public for tours and overnight stays. I think they also sell the bunny pajamas in all sizes at the gift shop.

Half of this movie was filmed in my hometown of Cleveland, OH (Still live there!). Specifically, the house where the family lives is ONLY 15 MINUTES AWAY FROM MY HOUSE!!! It's been renovated & is now a museum where you see many of the props from the movie set. At night, people can ACTUALLY rent rooms and sleep there overnight!
@PATRICK PIERSON....Hello from another Cleveland native (and I still live here too) Wondering if YOU have a LEG LAMP? I do, a 20 inch high lamp. It is in my living room all year round. People up the street from me have a FULL size leg lamp that they put in their living room window at Christmas. I think it has become a Cleveland symbol in a way!

Here's a couple of Christmas related movies that are always overlooked: on the comedy side, "1941", and on the dramatic side, "A Midnight Clear".
Funny you should mention "Elf" as one of your favourite Christmas movies. The main character in this movie, Ralphie (Peter Billingsley), plays Ming Ming at the North Pole / Santa's Workshop in that movie. You can tell who he is by his bright blue eyes, same in both movies.
A movie that I never miss seeing is White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. Just great and timeless!

White Christmas, The Bishops Wife & It's a Wonderful Life were always the top 3 holiday movies growing up. And the cartoons- The Grinch, Rudolph, etc. 😁
Always weird to me that this makes me feel nostalgic for that era, even though I was born decades after it. I think mostly it makes you think of more innocent times as a kid, no matter the year.

A true holiday tradition that has been going on for many years is the Christmas story. I'm so glad you will be adding it to your holiday traditions. I'd even recommend if you guys get the chance to watch the more recent sequel that they put out with all the original characters with exception of the mother who has I'm sadly passed. Some of the major films that have always been part of my favorites to watch are Santa Claus the movie. It gives you the whole perspective of how Santa became Santa also there's a movie called The Year without a Christmas which is a fabulous story of having faith in the Christmas spirit even when things are going horribly. They're wonderful movies and I'm sure your family would love them
You absolutely have seen that leg lamp on the internet. It became an icon of this movie. The lamp was created for the film, and is now a famous piece of merchandise. Also, 100%, the cool radio shows and tv shows for kids used to have those secret decoder rings and pins and such and they made it seem like such a big deal.
I have 4 brothers and 4 sisters , and we absolutely love this movie . Some of us were adults when this came out but the youngest basically grew up with this movie. We watch it every Christmas and Have passed it along to the next Generation. We Quote the movie all the time. We all have the leg lamp night lights , and we all have Christmas stories . The part when Flick gets his tongue stuck to the light pole is the best part of this movie. On Christmas day I watch this movie all day, back to back, on a channel that shows it for 24 hours and LMAO at that part every time.

It's based on several semi-biographical short stories written by the guy who's narrarating the movie, Jean Shepherd.
This was a Christmas tradition at our house. My brother and I watched this at least once every Christmas day. This, and a miniseries we both loved called 'Lonesome Dove.' A western.
I just read somewhere that the Mom’s scream when they bring the duck out is real. They didn’t tell her they were bringing it out with the head still on it and she actually screamed and laughed in surprise. This is my favorite Xmas movie and brings back memories of my dad. The movie is set in 1940 and Dad was born in 1930 so he was 10, Ralphie is 9. Dad always loved watching this every year because of the clothes and cars and the Farmall H pulling Santa. Dad always said that he didn’t think the movie would have been the same without Darrin McGavin as the dad, because of his facial expressions. Peter Billingsley that plays Ralphie is a director and producer in Hollywood. He co-produced “Elf” and plays Ming Ming. Those of us that grew up in the 70s and 80s also know him as Messy Marvin from the Hershey’s Syrup commercials and from TV’s “Real People”.
The guy playing the Dad is named Darren McGavin and he played a character named Carl Kolchak in the best Friday night t.v. show of the early 70's called The Nightstalker. He has so much charisma to him, he's funny and captivating to watch.

I watched The Nightstalker too. NEVER missed it. But I was in my '20s with kids of my own then.
This movie holds a special place for me and alot of people in my area. It was filmed here and many of the locations are very familiar to us. The Higbees department store the tall building shown in the opening shot is the Terminal Tower in Cleveland. The fire truck used in the flagpole scene sits behind a local firestation and is used for parades and special events. I actually went to Ralphies school. Ralphie's house has been turned into a museum dedicated to the film where you can actually buy pink bunny pajamas, leg lamps and of course Red Rider B-B guns in the gift shop.

That's so cool. Jean Shepherd grew up around East Chicago, Indiana - but yeah, this film was shot in Cleveland (the one time they didn't get much snow, so most the snow had to be made with a machine - so I hear).
I went to that museum this summer.
@RONALD JEFFREY... FINALLY, someone from Cleveland has pointed out that the opening shot of The Terminal Tower and Public Square, Higbee's Dept. Store (where my Dad worked from 1952 till he retired in the '84., and so did I in the '60s when I was a teenager and in college), the kids looking at one of the wonderful Christmas displays that Higbee's always had at Christmas. The Christmas parade on Public Square. The Santa Claus scene takes place in the first floor of Higbee's. We did all our shopping there, and the 20% employee discount we had on anything we bought. So many wonderful memories for me as a child in th 1950's going downtown to shop at Higbee's and especially at Christmas time, streets were always crowded. A time that was ruined with the coming of the shopping Malls. Now, sadly the first 2 floors of the old Higbee building is now a Casino. Thankfully they kept the metal "HIGBEE'S" sign on the corner wall by the display window the kids were looking at. Supposedly this takes place in Michigan or Chicago, but if you notice, Ralphie's house is on CLEVELAND STREET, but all the exteriors are in Cleveland. OH, and I have my OWN LEG LAMP, a 20" tall one that I have had for a long time now. I don't just bring it out at Christmas, it stays in my living room all year round. A neighbor on the next street from me actually has a FULL size LEG LAMP, that they place in their living room window every Christmas. Most of us CLEVELANDERS LOVE our leg lamps. It has sort of become a "symbol" of CLEVELAND!
Yes, the leg lamp is a huge meme especially around Christmastime. The lamp was gaudy and juvenescent but the dad's only concern wasn't that it was a tawdry lamp in the shape of a woman's leg but that he'd won something...anything. It was just the fact that he'd won something that puffed him up & filled him with pride. Of course the lamp is embarrassing for the mom especially since it's in the streetfront window for all the neighbors to see. That's the joke. For years people have fallen in love with the leg lamp and many people have one as part of their own Christmas decorations.
It was a special prize. Italian, no less. “Fragile!”

My favorite christmas movie! On Christmas Eve TBS & TNT run this movie back to back in a 24 hr marathon. Once it starts my TV stays on one of those channels for all of Christmas. I own a full size Leg Lamp & the smaller mini size as well. You wondered what Simonize was...A can of Simonize was a car wax....so glad y'all enjoyed this movie.
Seeing as how much you love the movie Elf, you might find it interesting that the actor who plays the elf in charge of the workers making the toys is the actor who played Ralphie in this movie
In live in Vermont, we have a Christmas parade when all the local maple and dairy farms cover their tractors in Christmas lights and drive thru the downtown area. It's always a good time.
My wife and I also reacted to this movie a week or so ago because it is her favorite Christmas movie and I had never seen it. Cute movie. There was a follow up to this released in November called A Christmas Story Christmas which is also very good and exceeded expectations.

This movie makes me think it’s what my dad experienced as a kid. The movie is told from the perspective of a kid which is why the Santa scene seems rough. My main reason that this is an all time favorite is because the amazing acting from the adults during the fantasy scenes. They were truly amazing. Now it’s time for you to watch the sequel on HBO Max. The importance of the leg lamp was recognition, that’s all the old man wanted.
