Books are my passion. I grew up reading from a young age and I try to keep reading as much as I can. History books, classic literature, primary texts. Fiction, non fiction, fantasy/sci-fi. Foreign language. I Loved seeing your classic and antiquity era books as well as all the literature. and also hope that future generations will treasure books the same way We do. I know a lot of kids don’t read anymore but it is my hope that they will do so one day again. I also have a kindle but I feel there’s nothing like holding a book, the cover and pages being wrinkled meaning that they have been well loved. I am determined that if I am rich enough one day, I will turn one entire room in my house into a library and design it to look very classic style. Not just books but beautiful paintings, sculptures pertaining to their relevant subjects. Maybe a sofa and rug. Secretary desks. I would build it as a very homey area too so I can always go there when I feel in need of it
Thank you for the comment, Yes these books bring me joy to look at and be around and I can see how the shelves can start to fill whole rooms over time. I have faith that books will continue to stick around as they have for generations. There is something uniquely human about the format though I agree it’s not as common of a hobby as compared to viewership on tv or TH-cam. Those that are, usually go deep though. As I said in the video it’s also a bit of a luxury in a sense to be able to dedicate so much time to reading and books, not something you can readily do when focused on survival or other issues first though truly it is not expensive and it is more accessible than ever if one can and wants to make time for it.

King, Warrior, Magician, Lover by Robert Moore, Jungian psychologist, is a classic about the mature masculine archetypes, but I suggest it to clients of any gender because it is about development. There are also many companion lectures here on TH-cam about these archetypal forces.

Yes! This is more like it. I myself, am working my way through modern classics, classics and philosophy. So your library is right up my alley. And! I love a second hand book. So much more history to it. The little personalised notes or annotations of previous owners, just makes it more, just so much MORE. (Why does the word ‘more’ look wrong the more I look at it?)

You have that book translated to english in editons from Oxford World’s Classics and Penguin Classics.But if that is too hard to read, another suggestion is Blindness by José Saramago (1998 nobel prize winner).

There are so many bookshelf tours from females and although I don't want to offend anyone by commenting gender wise, I did want you to know how much I appreciate seeing a bookshelf tour from a male perspective. Thank you for sharing your shelves. I am really enjoying the tour.
I really liked the video, I just have some points where I have slightly different views. Like for example, having loads of books I haven’t read would stress me out. I agree that simply knowing of a book is valuable just as well but I prefer keeping lists for that. I once heard that reading books and buying books are two very different hobbies. Of course it’s pretty cool that you’re getting many of them from thrift stores - I guess I’m more annoyed by other booktubers showing huge hauls from amazon. And then, of course buying a whole shelf of books might be cheaper than college but the community aspect gets lost completely. That might be the fault of the education system but in theory the real value of college should be being able to collaborate on ideas, explore and challenge existing theories in peer groups.
Thanks! Good points. I’m sure everyone learns differently. I know my acquiring of new books will probably always outpace my ability to read them all but it’s something I truly enjoy and I view it as building a personal library I can always browse and reference. Although it would take years to read them all I would never buy a book I’m not curious about or don’t intend to read just for aesthetic reasons I agree that feels superficial and wasteful.
I recently completed a literature course and while I have read most of the books and material on my own prior, it was enjoyable to see how others view the same stories I enjoyed for pleasure in an academic setting.
Great tour man. We almost have similar tastes. My personal suggestions include the James brothers, Cicero, Byron, Shelley the Romantics in general, political theory or at least it's originators like the Romans, also more roman works like the Satyricon perhaps, you might find latter psychoanalysts interesting like Adler, or Lacan if you're interested with language and from there further into the continental tradition of philosophy. Right now I'm getting into the Mahabharata, or at least sections of it so you might find that interesting, or just the Vedas in its entirety. Also more Russians lol. Great vid nevertheless.
I can see the Tim Ferris influence in the library. I skipped around the video but I think you'd enjoy CS Lewis a lot. I really need to read Virgil. Cheers
I have the shelf’s or sections I’ve read but personally I love having a large selection of books waiting for me. I feel as though a read book on the shelf has less “energy” or potential use than an unread one though some books do we ever really finish? Thanks for watching

"48 laws of power" for me is maybe the only book I hate in my library. I assume you are from US, maybe you haven't gotten familiar with more modern european classics, and I would like to suggest one to you, based on my estimation of your preferences. HERMAN HESSE, legendary German novelist. His underlying themes are individuality, eastern philosophy, reason vs soul, Jung's psychology... If I may suggest the first book as well. "Siddhartha" or "Steppen Wolf". I am a bit high and unsure of how long am I trying to assemble this comment. Pardon my non mothertounged, frankenglish.

Thank you! Honestly I have a wide curiosity and love building my library, have gotten a few hundred more books since this video, but I just read my current interest and mood and usually one thing leads to the next in subject or reference or inspiration
@@JustinOdisho I’d love to see a 2021 edition later down the road, but in terms of tackling I’m more so referring to how you actually read the texts, when I was a real beginner I often struggled with how to read books that weren’t just novels, I’m curious as to how you read and understand the books you have, I tend to take notes on a device after each reading session with novels, with plays since they’re often shorter I will really slow down, and with philosophy I’ll take notes as I read.
I think it builds at first. At first you don’t really understand what things like platonic means, or lots of philosophical or biblical references in concepts used in more literary works. I try to read in ascending level like that, not jump straight into some really esoteric philosophy but I don’t really take notes. The only thing I look doing is whenever I see I word I don’t know I look up the definition
Nice collection. We collect similar types of books. If I had your patience, I would have spent a lot less on my collection than you likely have on yours. I prefer having paper copies, too. It's not so far fetched that your online books might get censored or banned one day.

Funnily enough, earlier today I requested that Kathleen Raine title from my nearby public library. I was listening to a song (called Precincts of Felicity) inspired by Defending Ancient Springs so I decided to look into her work. Seems promising.
Thanks. I guess just read what you’re interested in and expand out from there everything is sort of all connected. I preferred to start with some of the Greek classics and mythology, and religious texts just because of how often they are referenced and built upon in later works of philosophy etc but I jump around a lot even between fiction and non and have a bookmark in dozens of things.
i think is amazing how cheap is book in America. I mean, GOOD books can be found really cheap. Here in Brazil any good book is really expensive, so, if i try to buy only used books from used books stores, i would end with crap or even old censurated (because of brazilian militar regime period around '64) version of books. It's a shame books good books be so hard to find here and when you find is not cheap to buy.
Well it used to be cheaper but still used books can be still be had for 1-4 Dollars. Sorry to hear that, perhaps the internet can aid your in finding books
Great library man! I highly recommend the book _Some Answered Questions_ by ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá which addresses philosophy, science, religion, and practically everything. Truly mind blowing stuff! ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá is the son of Bahá’u’lláh, the Founder of the Baha'i Faith -the newest independent world religion. The writings of Bahá’u’lláh are also really worth looking into. He said "the well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established.” "So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth." Anyways take care! :)
It’s definitely a lifetimes worth, and I hope to even make it through half of them but I like having a large selection to reference and choose from in my personal library
Existentialism I see, I can see the link between the authors. I recommend reading Notes from the Underground by Dostoevsky and also the Sickness Unto Death by Soren Kierkegaard. Also the Gay (joyous) Science by Friedrich Nietzche.
Thanks for the comment! I’ve read through a few of the Camus books, he does comment on Dostoevsky in an essay. I have Notes from the underground on my other shelf, have been in the mood to start with crime and punishment since I recently found a nice copy. Ive haven’t got that specific Kierkegaard though I have it on a list, but haven’t started on him either despite having a few on the shelf. Yes the penguin classics uses joyous science haha.

I try to remember to scan anything I pick up into libthing just so I can avoid getting duplicates. Always open to suggestions I have a large list I add to saved for later anytime something catches my interest. I have a handful of ebooks or articles or PDFs I’ll eread, But for a few bucks for the physical book I usually prefer not having to worry about formatting errors and storage and just have the physical thing. Things like instant vocab check and reading in dark are nice sometimes though.
And if there's a single book I'd say read it's rise and fall of American growth by Robert Gordon. It was one of the Buffet reccomends, and amazingly good. And interesting.

@@JustinOdisho that’s a shame, I myself can speak Arabic, but when it comes to reading the language I’m certainly not the best, I haven’t done much to correct that, hopefully in the future since I already have a solid footing. Out of interest, how do you find reading the complete works of Shakespeare, in terms of the size of the book, it is pretty huge. I myself just picked up a complete works of Shakespeare and it’s very heavy!
It’s definitely a desk top book, i couldn’t take it to a park to read, I have a few of the plays in individual volumes. All of the plays I have read so far such as king lear, the sonnets, etc have been in individual volumes but rather than find all of the dozens of plays in a set or individual volumes this satisfied the completionist in me, that if I ever wanted I have them all to reference and read.
You need some history shelves. :D I have one shelf all devoted to Spanish history. One of ancient history. One of medieval and Renaissance history. One of jewish. One of Latin America, one of asian/chinese. And three of american.
A few years of regular going to book shops, thrift shops, library sales. It’s just basically what I did every few days for the past year or 2 and I’d still like to continue. It’s one of my favorite things to do.
Another young guy who fell down the stoicism/Peterson/jung youtube rabbit hole just like me some months ago. I suggest Steve Donoghues channel to cure that.
Haha I’ve been subscribed to Steve for a while now actually I appreciate his channel. I actually don’t necessarily agree with his take on a lot of philosophical / theological writing as he says it’s all word game trash. He has a point but I don’t find it to be all that and I also think he reads a lot of things I would consider the same such as pulpy romance / fiction though that is his job I believe. I don’t necessarily watch Peterson avidly or think he’s that great, some of his lectures are entertaining, though I know exactly which stoicism trap you mean. I do still think the original texts are good despite their new found followings though yes it’s not my bible. Jung I actually got into not from Peterson or something but just from my interest in psychology and even some of the books on sleep, dreams, and psychedelics and others often reference his work. Of course it’s pretty cool that you’re getting many of them from thrift stores - I guess I’m more annoyed by other booktubers showing huge hauls from amazon. And then, of course buying a whole shelf of books might be cheaper than college but the community aspect gets lost completely. That might be the fault of the education system but in theory the real value of college should be being able to collaborate on ideas, explore and challenge existing theories in peer groups.
Thanks! Good points. I’m sure everyone learns differently. I know my acquiring of new books will probably always outpace my ability to read them all but it’s something I truly enjoy and I view it as building a personal library I can always browse and reference. Although it would take years to read them all I would never buy a book I’m not curious about or don’t intend to read just for aesthetic reasons I agree that feels superficial and wasteful.
I recently completed a literature course and while I have read most of the books and material on my own prior, it was enjoyable to see how others view the same stories I enjoyed for pleasure in an academic setting.

Great tour man. We almost have similar tastes. My personal suggestions include the James brothers, Cicero, Byron, Shelley the Romantics in general, political theory or at least it's originators like the Romans, also more roman works like the Satyricon perhaps, you might find latter psychoanalysts interesting like Adler, or Lacan if you're interested with language and from there further into the continental tradition of philosophy. Right now I'm getting into the Mahabharata, or at least sections of it so you might find that interesting, or just the Vedas in its entirety. Also more Russians lol. Great vid nevertheless.

Personally, my idea of my home library is a collection of all the books I've read completely.
I have the shelf’s or sections I’ve read but personally I love having a large selection of books waiting for me. I feel as though a read book on the shelf has less “energy” or potential use than an unread one though some books do we ever really finish? Thanks for watching

I think you would enjoy The Art of Communicating by Thich Nhat Hanh and The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi. What sort of envision do you have for yourself down the road? Great stuff, I was quite amazed and occasionally creeped out by the amount of similarity in our reading interests and impressions of some works. "48 laws of power" for me is maybe the only book I hate in my library.
I assume you are from US, maybe you haven't gotten familiar with more modern european classics, and I would like to suggest one to you, based on my estimation of your preferences. HERMAN HESSE, legendary German novelist. His underlying themes are individuality, eastern philosophy, reason vs soul, Jung's psychology... If I may suggest the first book as well. "Siddhartha" or "Steppen Wolf".

Thank you! Honestly I have a wide curiosity and love building my library, have gotten a few hundred more books since this video, but I just read my current interest and mood and usually one thing leads to the next in subject or reference or inspiration
@@JustinOdisho I’d love to see a 2021 edition later down the road, but in terms of tackling I’m more so referring to how you actually read the texts, when I was a real beginner I often struggled with how to read books that weren’t just novels, I’m curious as to how you read and understand the books you have, I tend to take notes on a device after each reading session with novels, with plays since they’re often shorter I will really slow down, and with philosophy I’ll take notes as I read.
I think it builds at first. At first you don’t really understand what things like platonic means, or lots of philosophical or biblical references in concepts used in more literary works. I try to read in ascending level like that, not jump straight into some really esoteric philosophy but I don’t really take notes. The only thing I look doing is whenever I see I word I don’t know I look up the definition
Nice collection. We collect similar types of books. If I had your patience, I would have spent a lot less on my collection than you likely have on yours. I prefer having paper copies, too. It's not so far fetched that your online books might get censored or banned one day.

I dont have favorites but I do think you can kind of judge a book on its cover design, spine, publisher etc..

Thanks. I guess just read what you’re interested in and expand out from there everything is sort of all connected. I preferred to start with some of the Greek classics and mythology, and religious texts just because of how often they are referenced and built upon in later works of philosophy etc but I jump around a lot even between fiction and non and have a bookmark in dozens of things.

i think is amazing how cheap is book in America. I mean, GOOD books can be found really cheap. Here in Brazil any good book is really expensive, so, if i try to buy only used books from used books stores, i would end with crap or even old censurated (because of brazilian militar regime period around '64) version of books. It's a shame books good books be so hard to find here and when you find is not cheap to buy.

Great library man! I highly recommend the book _Some Answered Questions_ by ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá which addresses philosophy, science, religion, and practically everything. Truly mind blowing stuff! ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá is the son of Bahá’u’lláh, the Founder of the Baha'i Faith -the newest independent world religion. The writings of Bahá’u’lláh are also really worth looking into. He said "the well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established.” "So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth." Existentialism I see, I can see the link between the authors. I recommend reading Notes from the Underground by Dostoevsky and also the Sickness Unto Death by Soren Kierkegaard. Also the Gay (joyous) Science by Friedrich Nietzche.
Thanks for the comment! I’ve read through a few of the Camus books, he does comment on Dostoevsky in an essay. I have Notes from the underground on my other shelf, have been in the mood to start with crime and punishment since I recently found a nice copy. Ive haven’t got that specific Kierkegaard though I have it on a list, but haven’t started on him either despite having a few on the shelf. Yes the penguin classics uses joyous science haha.

I try to remember to scan anything I pick up into libthing just so I can avoid getting duplicates. Always open to suggestions I have a large list I add to saved for later anytime something catches my interest. I have a handful of ebooks or articles or PDFs I’ll eread, But for a few bucks for the physical book I usually prefer not having to worry about formatting errors and storage and just have the physical thing. Things like instant vocab check and reading in dark are nice sometimes though.

And if there's a single book I'd say read it's rise and fall of American growth by Robert Gordon. It was one of the Buffet reccomends, and amazingly good. And interesting.

Out of interest, how do you find reading the complete works of Shakespeare, in terms of the size of the book, it is pretty huge. I myself just picked up a complete works of Shakespeare and it’s very heavy!
It’s definitely a desk top book, i couldn’t take it to a park to read, I have a few of the plays in individual volumes. All of the plays I have read so far such as king lear, the sonnets, etc have been in individual volumes but rather than find all of the dozens of plays in a set or individual volumes this satisfied the completionist in me, that if I ever wanted I have them all to reference and read.

A few years of regular going to book shops, thrift shops, library sales. It’s just basically what I did every few days for the past year or 2 and I’d still like to continue. It’s one of my favorite things to do.

Haha I’ve been subscribed to Steve for a while now actually I appreciate his channel. I actually don’t necessarily agree with his take on a lot of philosophical / theological writing as he says it’s all word game trash. He has a point but I don’t find it to be all that and I also think he reads a lot of things I would consider the same such as pulpy romance / fiction though that is his job I believe. I don’t necessarily watch Peterson avidly or think he’s that great, some of his lectures are entertaining, though I know exactly which stoicism trap you mean. I do still think the original texts are good despite their new found followings though yes it’s not my bible. Jung I actually got into not from Peterson or something but just from my interest in psychology and even some of the books on sleep, dreams, and psychedelics and others often reference his work.
