Thank you Z! For me, the Stang Ray is the ultimate clean, pedal amp. Super percussive and dynamic. It's like plugging your guitar into a grand piano! Wonderful idea on the future half power switch as well. I personally love the generous headroom this amp affords. That being said, in most venues i never turn it up past 2. Someday i would love to take the Steve Miller route and procure a 2x12 combo. I love my Z open back cabinet but one less thing to lug around would be nice.
Hey Doc......Telejas from Z-Talk! Thanks for this history lesson on the Stang Ray! Out of every amp in the world, the Ray is MY tone! I've had two Stang Ray's between 2006 and 2012, was stupid and got rid of the first one, traded the 2nd one for a Z-Wreck (which is another amazing amp), but I just didn't bond with it like I did the Ray's.... I currently have an original Stingray, which has been my be-all, end-all amp I've ever wanted. I'm so glad you made this amp, I can't even express my gratitude. As well as my gratitude over the past 12 years, when you've personally helped me out (more than a few times). Love your amps, love your support..... I can't recommend Z amps enough! I'll always be a supporter, and a player of Z amps! Thank you!
Ordered mine when they first came out in head cab form with 212 open back speaker cab loaded with two Celestion Alnico Blues. Currently is has one Blue and one Gold speaker. Great gigging amps and take pedals very well in the front end.
This was so interesting! I have had a Stingray (OG name!) for years and absolutely love it. Doc is right, the things are LOUD. Half power switch would be killer.
@@DrZAmplification really wish I could get this mod on my 2014 Z-Wreck, think I could get it breaking up without an attenuator at gigs and practice in 20w mode. Anyone in the UK you'd recommend to do the mod?
Love ef86 preamps. They have some killer distortion,too.

The stang ray was the amp that made me fall in love with Dr Z amps. I now own a Maz 18 head/cab and LOVE it.

I've got a plan to pick up and Stangray, just wondering would your 2x10 Z speakers work and sound any Good with the Stangray?
They will be very percussive, and they will smooth out the top end of the stangray a bit.

Does the half power cut down to 2 tubes or is it a triode-pentode switch? Same question for the DB4.
Kaare Festvog no, thanks for asking. It shunts the signal to ground on two of the power tubes to disable them, making this a true half power switch.
Kaare Festvog featured on the DB4, and Z Lux and the Z Wreck is also sometimes ordered or modded with this feature.
