I have a question, a problem..... I have a Huge rooster and 4 hens. The roo and 3 hens I raised from day one chicks, hatched March 2023. One of those 3 hens is a naked neck and she is all torn up from the rooster, living alone in her own tiny coop now because her hen mates also beat her up after he is done mating her. So in May I acquired a pullet hatched March 2024. She started laying almost a week ago. The rooster is quite fond of her and mates her often. Last week I was holding her and realized she had sour crop so I brought her in the house and gave yogurt and massaged her and it resolved. But while in the house I was petting her and OMG, my hand went into a wound on her wide! It's a large wound, and deep. I have been bathing her to clean it and using Veterycin and other stuff and she is healing. There was no blood and it doesn't seem to bother her. My question is... do hens have reduced sensation on the sides of their bodies where the spurs would hit. She lets me clean it, no complaints, does not seem to be in any pain. I've been keeping her in the house most of the day and at night and when she goes out she's in a dog kennel for safety. Today I put a hen saddle on her but the rooster moved it when he mated her. She is the newcomer and she gets picked on by the hens and injured by the rooster. But in spite of that she follows the roo around like she is lovesick. I live very rural and keep him because of hawks and coyotes etc. Sorry this is long. Any insight into why my little hen has no pain with a huge wound? I'm hoping she is going to grow big like my durable Wyandotte who is very sturdy. She is an ISA Brown or Golden Comet, not sure. Thank You!
There are just too many roosters in the flock that’s why it’s obvious to see the hens are all over mated and looking distressed!
