@@gxtmfa because Anishinaabemowin is the language, our people didn't have written language before colonization, so as long as what you write is understandable it doesn't matter how you write it
Damn. I haven't been to a pow wow in a couple of years. I've always felt self conscious about being a more light skinned native American. I can't wait till this whole thing is over and I can go to one again.
No one will judge you if you come honestly and just be who you are and proud of your culture. I'm very pale and so are my siblings, and we've been going our whole lives and only ever been accepted
Wow I just had flashbacks to pow wows when I was younger. That kid looks just like me back then except my braid was twice as long at that age. I cut it after my dad passed but I still miss it. I wish I was able to learn out language before he passed since he was the only one in our family that spoke it and knew the traditions. EDIT: also that kid did way better then I did when I was called up to drum. The beat was never a problem since I've been a drummer (just not medicine drum) my whole life, it was singing along. They actually shoved a hunk of frybread into my mouth halfway through the song.
@acerb45666555 Many of us are aware that we are called the Anishinabe or the various pronunciations of it that exist. Chippewa is another. The reason for so many of the spelling differences derive from the fact that the language was a spoken one that had many different dialects and was very hard to put into limited text characters. They had to invent a whole new vowel system to teach someone unfamiliar with it. The spelling differs from my fathers rez and others within a few hours drive.
They want us to stop beating our drums so that we can stop praying to our other father in heaven no way I will always be my drums for my Indian Brothers and it's in my heart if you didn't know where the 12 tribe 🌈🌏🌎🌍🙏🤝☮️☮️💗💗🇺🇸🇺🇸💯💯🎯💌🤳💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
@acerb45666555 - You have a good point, but I think alot of us on both sides are embracing the Anishinabe name more and more. Just like the Papagos dropped their name and now use Tohono O'dham and the Navajos to Dine' Change comes slow. Personally, I say I'm Ojibway because anybody who is non-Native doesn't know what Anishinabe is, but they will over time cuz like I say..change takes time.
I’m non native and I’ve started using term Anishinaabe mowim because, well, I asked a few Anishinaabe folk what they prefer to be called and that’s the term they used. Just seems like common decency.
LOL whoa I know most of those guys, they drumming in the indian bowl downtown LdF. One is my cuz. :D Just typed in Ojibwe and you guys fourth on the list!!! You guys sound good even back then. I like the pow wows down the road at Bear river better. The indian bowl is too weird for me. Plus aren't we Ojibwe/Anishinabe? Should be the Ojibwe Bowl or Anishinabe Bowl ha ha ha
I half agree. I mean, change does take time but some white people recognize the name Anishinabe. I'm white and from Michigan and I was raised hearing both names. Maybe its a sign of things to come???
@lolavan101 .....hey, why not do as CAP,(Congess Of Aboriginal Peoples), suggest's. and unite all Nishnabe, etc, reserves into the original unified peoples! why be divided on tiny reserves? pull together!! im white but i think CAP is right on! after all, its how Ireland became a nation again! one for all, all for one!

Anishanabe and Ojibwe are the same thing. Just a different name.
Isn't Anishinaabe the Ojibwe word for "First Nations"? There's more than one kind of FN.
Aniishinaabe stands for The People. Ojibwe is the Puckered Mocassing People. Referring to the same people
