Those quest-givers in the tavern are no companions actually. The tooltip has "Type: Unknown" for the quest npcs and "Type: Wanderer" for companions. They just look the same and are both called witch hunter unfortunately.
Pressing F1 then F4(Advance, might be called engage now) will put your ranged both foot and mounted into skirmish. Don't need to do the quest for the Witch hunter, that one isn't recruitable, i wanna say the recruits look slightly different in the hat. also, good idea to work towards the 50 (?) charm skill point early that gives more influence per battle. It will help greatly in wages as a mercenary if that's the play type you're going for. I would follow caravans at a distance to rush in and save them once attacked, as a bonus, you get all the extra caravan loot from the troops the bandits killed before you got there. don't let them get too low though, because your % of loot considers the entire engagement when calculating kills, even those that died before you joined the battle. plus, as caravans travel from city to city, it gives you a chance to sell prisoners and loot, and check taverns for companions, mercs, and later, the RoR. So it's just a win/win/win. You don't necessarily have to put skill perks into charm, you could just ride off of the attribute points assigned to social, and use your perks for leadership instead if you want, or anything else really, either way social is a pretty good category to level regardless, as even trade has some great early level perks that are particularly useful early game. if you rush to enter the city before the caravan, you can take advantage of the prices before the merchants sell out.
I found the optimal army composition to fight chaos warriors warbands as the empire. 95 units total: 30 outriders (no need to upgrade them, veteran version cost 950 to promote and 40 upkeep per day), 30 pikemen, at least one warrior priest and a priestess of Shaylla (starts with 85 medicine), 20 between handgunners and huntsmen, 10 greatswords/sergents as a support. The chaos knights will charge straight for the pikemen, getting impaled. Once they are dealt with, retreat infantry and continue to move your outriders in order to volley fire into the infantry warriors until they are defeated.
I love that you are using a sledgehammer!!! I have been using one at the moment to and I had a moment where I hit 5 enemies with 1 swing. It really good only a bit slow but when you 2 handed levels up its amazing!!! Keep it going my man :)

I would not keep infantry as close to ranged, they tend to block sight. Also moving the ranged back at the start > closer toward the enemy, few extra shots for free during the early game. If theres high ground they gain some range on top
Yes but all of this bandits are an issue for bannerlord economy, really a lot of parties and hideout make caravan in struggle, and civilian impossibile to trade with city.. it s a bug not a features need to be fixed
Will you learn magic eventually or will you forgo magic altogether My typical build for this mod is a battlemage whi is also skilled with two handed swords and firearms along with fire magic On a related note I find it easier to use a thrusting weapon from horseback as it's easier to aim
what about recruiting deserters, having them in your panty should increase the rate of roguery learned, also having a mercenary army made of redeemed deserters could have a dirty dozen feel
Apologies but the battles I tend to auto resolve are just too simple to provide any kind of challenge. But rest assured, later in the series we must overcome much greater obstacles!

You can go to nuln and get yourself gunpowder weapons and cannons there’s a bit of a quest to get the vendor to open up the stores though

Not only are the Grenadier troops a friendly fire massacre, they also tend to cause a lot of crashing for some reason.
Avoid them at all cost.
