When you replace and upgrade the turbo, it's a perfect time for that 3" exhaust upgrade from JT Martelius!

I’ve been struggling with this one. The OBX cat-back 2.5” exhaust recently came back in stock, and I have a “straight style” OEM downpipe flange to go with my 16T turbo, and my repair shop can make a custom downpipe for me. So for about $800, I can have that exhaust setup. Or for about $1000, I can get the JT Tuning 3” exhaust, but I would have to install it myself.
Since this is a “skinny rod” engine, I’m not planning to turn the boost up past 12 psi. So I’m not sure if 3” is overkill, or if it would be a good setup for my car.

@@Vehicularious many years ago, I had an '89 760 Turbo with the stock TD05-12B turbo and it had a full 3" exhaust on it. The sound was marvelous and it never caused any issues with the 9mm rods on the stock engine that had almost 350,000 miles on it when I replaced the engine for a 13mm "K" block. The replacement engine kept the 3" exhaust, too...

@@Schwedenstahl245 okay, you are starting to sway me in the direction of getting the JT Tuning exhaust. One thing I want to make sure I get is an exhaust with a good sound, and I just don't know enough about the OBX exhaust to be certain of that.
Maybe I will install the new turbo first with my open downpipe "stub," and then I will order the JT Tuning exhaust. That will give me a few fun weeks of driving a noisy turbo car with some tractor whistle sounds 😀

Great content I have a white 1990 740 turbo wagon with the m46 trans and 331k kms on the odo. Just did my trans fluid thanks to this vid although I’ve heard redline mtl is better than type F so I went with that and notice a big difference.

That’s awesome mileage for a turbo! Stay tuned, hopefully I will have more videos on this car in the near future.

I had a 740 but i sold it a while ago. I sold it because i didnt have time to fix it. Many problems, spent the whole winter fixing it just for more problems after a while. Greetings from Sweden

It’s amazing how many little problems accumulate on older cars. I like driving a car where everything works, whenever possible. But whenever I look at a used car for sale, I’m routinely seeing 5-10 things that are either cosmetically damaged or non-functional. Old Volvos may be easy to work on, but fixing broken things is still time consuming!

A very rust susceptible area on these 740 wagons is where the rear frame rail inserts are spot welded into the unibody. Water gets between the insert and the adjacent unibody surfaces and rust forms. I just cut a good amount or rust out on mine and welded in new metal. Highly recommend removing the rubber plugs that are on top of the rear frame rails, accessible in the rear corner storage compartments, and spraying inside with a heavy dose of Fluid Film.
