I heard this on Danish TV back in 1977, and I had accepted, that it was lost forever. It was the first time i heard Harry Chapin. That evening meant at lot to me. his sings has been in my life ever since. I went and bought greatest stories live and Danceband on the titanic, and the songs keeps returning to me in all kinds of situations. I found this while looking for a link to "Flowers ar red" I am a teacher, and wanted to send the song to a colleague, I thing it is the best song ever made about teaching, and I have tried to let my students use all the colors in my lessons. This is a fantastic look back to an event that has been impotant in shaping me as a person. And I have loved cello music since that evening. Thank you for sharing it

My mother loved Chapin which is how I learned of him, and when she told me I had to do things the way the teacher wanted, I'd reply "Yes, mother, there's no reason to see things any other way than the way they always have been seen". Still got a smack on the ass but she appreciated the reference.

Thank you so much! i got tp see Harry Chapin -sharing these Wonderful Concerts with someone i loved dearly. So glad You got a very similar connection. Wasn't it just a whole Nother thing to hear him abd his band Live, and Share the experience with everyone at the Concert... where we felt somehow like Family while we psrticipated in his performance -all of us! Such a deep and abiding loss when the news came that ... Shock of all shocks- Harry Chapin was k¡||ed on the Freeway, and would sing & play Live... never again. Nor the band members, What would they Do?? What would We Do?
We Miss him, and things like this are nice, But What is up with the 11people in the Audience who sound like they don't Clap or show much appreciation in their Culture(?) i wss so used to sounds of recognition for these Songs, and Thunderous Appöause iNstantly when the Song truly ends!??! Well We know what it wss to See them while he was Alive... What a Gift!! Thsnks again

one of the greatest story tellers. Blessed to see him in late 70's and met after the show. $1 for an autograph that went to charity - what a man.. Listen to "Stories Live" album...

I miss this dude so much. I started listening to him as a 12 year old in 1976 by endlessly listening to Greatest Stories Live 8track with my family. I saw him live at the Hollywood Bowl with Arlo Guthrie opening for him in 1977. It was my first concert and still, I think the best. Incredible performance here. RIP Harry, you are never forgotten.

I saw him in concert 5 times and had tickets for the 6th. I never saw an individual truly enjoy his audience like he did . One time he had sound issues at the start . He came out , set on the edge of the stage a talked to everyone . I felt like he was in my living room sitting go on my couch talking to a life long friend . I wish I could have taken my kids to experience Harry .

Harry and his team of merry pranksters came alive in communion with audiences; this is an especially wonderful concert - great production values, close-up intimacy with Harry as he shares, and the intangible 'hygge' of Denmark warming and softening the experience. A concert for the ages. 'Sssh. I know just how you feel.' Thanks!

As a HUGE Chapin fan now for more than 40 years, I invite any new Harry live performances on U-Tube. I'm still waiting for his first performance on the "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson where he sang, "Taxi". He was the only singing performer ever to be brought back the next night to repeat his previous night performance of "Taxi".

    • @joeybrooman5338
      @joeybrooman5338 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Many of Johnny Carson's guests were never recorded, and have been lost forever. However, I did a search for Harry Chapin on The Tonight Show, and found two performances listed on a regular web page, which mentioned exactly what you said---that he was the only performer ever to be brought back on the following night for an encore. Also, the performance is of "Taxi", so I think this is what you're asking for. He looks really young.
"Taxi" on The Tonight Show th-cam.com/video/c5dwksSbD34/w-d-xo.html
"Mr Tanner" on Tonight Show, possibly same night (he's wearing same shirt) th-cam.com/video/RDkmqmHFJtM/w-d-xo.html
"They Call Her Easy" on Tonight Show (later date I think, 9/20/1973) th-cam.com/video/HIwbin1cFr0/w-d-xo.html

I was fortunate enough to be brought to the venue formally known as "The Garden State Art Center" by my parents in both 1977 and 1978 for the Chapin concerts. I was born 12/13/71, so I was about 5 and 6 for the events I'm writing about. The second event I remember a little better, obviously. Harry waited to meet EVERONE. Long, orderly line. I mean, everyone, including me and my family. He picked up my 6 (or 5 or 7) year old sister and kissed her on the cheek, right in front of me and my parents. He then, as genuinely as your local, honest mechanic, shook my hand and wished me well. A true gem of humanity. I love to remember the event and hope someone else enjoys my reminiscing.

Good Citizen thank you so much for sharing. You are truly blessed to have been able to see and meet this amazing and talented performer. He was the model father, husband, friend, co-worker, and overall human. The world lost an icon when he passed. I born in 2003, so obviously I was never able to see him live or meet him. I wish i could have. But I have footage of him. That’s enough for me. He’s inspired me and helped so much in my life, even though he’s been gone for so long. A true blessing to humanity ❤️

Max Amir I got into Harry when I was about the age you are now. My mom had a crate of lps that included Heads and Tales and Short Stories. Heads and Tales was warped, so I listened to Short Stories 1st. I was 13and I was hooked. It was 1991, and 10 years since the car crash that claimed him, which is about all I knew about him at the time. The summer I turned 14, I went to a second hand book and record store and purchased all of the Harry Chapin records they had in stock. I purchased “Sniper and Other Love Songs”, “Dance Band on the Titanic”, “Living Room Suite”, “Legends of the Lost and Found”, and “Sequel”. I was a fan for life and even started writing my own songs. Within 6 months, I had every Harry Chapin recording available at the time. I’m sorry for the rambling post, but reading your post brought back a lot of great memories.

I only had the chance to see Harry in concert once, so far back in the 70's ans so recently from Viet Nam that I don;t ahve an exact date, or even a City! Someplace between Orange and Ventura counties I suppose. Those specifics are gone, and more are slippign away every day now. but Harry's performance is as clear in my mind as is this video! I'm a better person for haveing had Harry in my life.

I saw Harry in concert at my University in October 1975 (he was the Homecoming concert). Tom was his opening act and kept singing song after song. We were starting to wonder what was going on when Tom mentioned that Harry would be there soon. He was across the street in the basement of one of the dorms watching the baseball playoffs with the students. Turns out he was a huge Cincinnati Reds fan. Harry finally joined us and gave an incredible concert.

Harry Chapin had a unique way of writing stories into his songs, I always wonder how many more unique songs he would've wrote if he had not gotten involved in a fatal accident. I like his songs even though sometimes I get teary-eyed, I don't know how Harry holds together singing and not get emotional singing certain songs but I'm sure he knows he's not singing about someone he knows in life👍🇺🇸..

Great video. My wife Mary and I saw Harry in Milwaukee twice between Sept. 1976 and Sept 1977 in this time frame. We were 4th row center and this brings us right back. He was so good in concert. No tricks, just a great band. The only problem is that the crowds in Europe don't get the humor. He was so relatable. We even got the family treatment with his young son Josh (Cat's in the Cradle son) napping off stage and playing with a jar of coins. One song he hung on to dad shyly. We've seen them all and Harry is in our top five concerts. Thanks for sharing.
