What do the soft plastics get recycled into? Many plastics separated for recycling end up in landfill, I don't want to be wasting my time if this is the case?
For products, anything where the plastic can be thicker and doesn't have to be as high quality can be mostly recycled materials (Replas, one of redcycle's listed consumers, makes benches, fences, decking, signs etc; that are 85% recycled material). It can also be used as fillers, such as in road construction or insulation, or to 'dilute' virgin plastic products so they use a bit less (say 10-30% recycled, depending on the product). The worst case, if they can't use or sell the plastic right now, is it will be burned for energy; not perfect, but still better than landfill, as at least the ash had one more use after you recycled it. As the video says though, the best thing to do is reduce the amount of soft plastic that you have to dispose of, if you can.
Paper bags, especially if they have food scraps on them, are best to put in your coompost. Tear them up and pop them in your home compost bin, or into your council green organics bin.
