    There is a reason that I love to work on my Japanese bikes... a lot less headache than the HD. Wow, you just gave me one more reason not to own one. Great work Del, but no thanks. Love the videos as always.

      its so funny i totally agree with you but i own a Road King and a Fat Boy. I know how inferiour they are in just about every aspect you could compare bikes in but there is just something i absolutely love about their brutish flawed nature :P

      What a faff to replace a drive belt. Chains and sprockets are so much easier.

      Add up all the time over the years that it takes to adjust, clean and lube a chain and replace chains and sprockets and belt drive is a much better option in my opinion.

    • @TeraPixel
      @TeraPixel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesweber4938 I've had chain and cardan axle driven bikes myself. Gotta say cardan was my favorite. I guess the downside there being the lowest efficiency in power transmission.

    This was totally awesome to watch. I had no idea those things were so complicated in there! Good heavens, if the initial cost of the bikes wasn't stratospheric enough to keep me clutching at my wallet, one sight of this cemented the terror, lol. I always love your KP duty before, during, and after the job, it soothes my cleanliness OCD like no other channel. :)

      Thank you kindly Sir, glad you approve... it's a slightly complex job so pays to keep everything in order... have a few days to wait for the parts and a few other issues in between, I need to make a special tool for the job, so we'll get to part 2 when we're ready! Enjoy your weekend!

    Delboy's I have a 2006 Harley Heritage Softail, and I just want to thank you for the videos on the three oil changes and clutch adjustments. They helped me a lot .

      Sure thing buddy, good honest simple work aye, plain old nuts and bolts and with the heavy duty quality of everything on a Harley, things don't seize, break and snap off... they just come apart and go back together like a big ol' truck! And I love that I can still use my old AF tools...

    So many good, helpful tips throughout this video. From the cardboard "primary cover" to keep the hardware in order to the problem-solver-Supreme method of using the double offset boxed end wrench as an extended "cheater bar" to get that needed leverage on the Allen key stuck off in a deep, dark hole, this video is chock-full of useful tidbits to make life easier. I shudder to think how much that job would cost at the Harley dealer. The owner of this big Harley is very lucky to have you working on it Del. My Handy lift has a drop out panel that sure makes rear wheel removal easier on those monsters. I agree with the other comments on all the cool pro tricks you showed in this video like how you handled the primary tensioner shoe. Solid gold info all throughout. Many thanks to you and Penny as always. Cheers. ❤👍👍

    I met a rider at a campsite in the Yukon Territory of Canada earlier this Summer who was in the middle of doing this job at camp. His brand new Harley belt had snapped near the beginning of his road trip. I couldn't believe what a huge job it was to change it. Harley couldn't get him a new one for weeks so his wife was mailing him his old belt to reinstall.

    • @Moonfleet41

      Not sure on that buddy, the only thing referred to that was single use was the 5 bolts that hold the inner primary case on!

  • @David40S
    @David40S ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A lot to be said for a single sided swinging arm and a chain. I was wondering half way through, just how much more work was going to be needed simply to get access to the blessed thing. I'm sure you know where all the bits go when putting it all back together, not sure if I would!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, a long job on a full dress tourer.. but by contrast, a Sportster is a fraction of the time due to it's design construction ! as the swing arm bolts INSIDE the belt, it changes pretty much like a single sided setup !

    Can someone explain to me the rationality of making it that difficult and time consuming for designing the belt drive like that? Compared to say a Sportster? It is just mind blowing they decided to go this route!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Certainly Jess. They didn't at any point "decide to go with this route"... the design principle evolved between 1903 and 1920's, and by 1920 it was a revised feature of the Model J. This principle has been retained right up to the modern day M8 engines as a matter of history and heritage (make your own opinions on that)... the Sportster you comapre this to was developed in the early 1950's with the first model K out in 1957... this principle has since been discointinued as outdated.. So what ever your opinions of Harley are, they've been making bikes continuously for 121 years... longer than any other...so i guess they know a bit about marketing aye..lol!

    • @jessflo7584
      @jessflo7584 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Moonfleet41 My question was why didn't they make it easier to maintain, not in any way bash the bike. Not sure about the history lesson, but why make one easier to work on and the others to take apart like a lego set? While Harley has been making motorcycles for a long time, others have made better. And just about any current mech will tell you that the new HDs are junk and a hassle to work on.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My point is, that Harley invented the system you're criticising back in 1920..and the Sportster system you mentioned in 1957... there's your answer, there's your 'made better'... problem is.... Harley are stuck in a time loop of their own doing.. because they have marketed so heavily on heritage and tradition, they can't now afford to let it go and abandon those key identifying features they're famous for.. shame really because it's not like they don't know how, V-Rod, Revolution Max, Buell 1125R etc... it's just that every time they seem to step forward...they close it down anfd step back to 1920 again... And as for hassle to work on.. we're in agreement on that one mate !

  • @andrewjohnson6297
    @andrewjohnson6297 ปีที่แล้ว

    Certainly got their money’s worth with that belt. I know a lot of things are easier to work on with the new M8 engines compared to the twin cam but I couldn’t see a way changing the belt drive could be made easier it’s certainly an involved process .

    No unnecessary talk, humor, or repeating yourself verbally. It's as if you are following a script like professional video Productions. Your lighting and camera work are always good. Kiddos to Pitstop Penny for I know she's helps as well.

    That`s a hell of a lot of work, how long do they usually last?. Interesting vid Del, even though i`m no Harley fan, it shows how labour intensive the job is, and why it would cost a packet if a main dealer did it?.

      It would indeed mate, but then everything costs a lot at the main dealer!... On average a belt and pulleys should last double what a chain and sprockets does, but of course as with all things, it depends how they're treated and maintained!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean you're finding your Breakout difficult on bends, or are you asking because it's hearsay? They are a long bike with pretty extreme wheel base, they have a massive wide rear tyre and a 21" front wheel, so due to this construction, they're not built for throwing round bends, they're very much a straight line cruiser... if you want one, or have one already, you'll just have to get used to it's constraints and enjoy it for what it is! If you want better handling from a Harley, then pick something like an M8 StreetBob with far less extreme styling... Hope that helps!

    OK... Just how in the hell was that bike still able to motor down the road with over 1/2 its teeth missing on the belt? That had to be a real jerky ride going down the road. Lucky it was caught in time, like you said. Shredding off, getting caught in the wheel or doing more damage would just be a really bad day. Love the content, as always, my friend. Working on them is whats required and what we do. Its a love hate thing.like being married. As you work on your bike thats how you get to know it. Thats the beginning of your relationship with the old girl. Id venture to say guys who buy new bikes all the time dont work on their bikes much. Just my point of view.

      Having worked on both bikes, I can tell you how finite Japanese engines are, by 30,000 miles or more, most Jap stuff is heading for big repair bills in so many ways they are horribly disposable, which is a shame because they're not cheap! But with Harleys, although the consumables wear out like any other, the engine's just don't... just look at the immaculate quality of that primary system, it's like brand new at 40k miles... they just don't wear out and will roll on forever!
