I ski in Scotland (it’s great when there’s even only 10cm snow!) and I can assure you that even the ‘grandma’ lift in Cervinia seems fairly modern to me! In Scotland you would love it as there are many vintage ropeways and old poma lifts that are still operating perfectly today! It just shows how well these ski tows are built! There is only 1 gondola in the whole of Scotland that is used for skiing and even it is fairly old. The Lecht 2090 ski area is mainly poma button lifts with one Poma ‘Delta’ chairlift which has wooden seats! It’s such a satisfying sound when the old chairs run over the wheels on the pylons. As you mentioned you wouldn’t like to wait for the lift every time….
It's been a long time I went skiing and this video makes me miss it even more. I do really share your enthusiasm about all of the gears and switches making the old ropeways work. Keep up the great videos 😄

We have our own version of many of those lifts like mixed chairs and gondolas on the same lift, as well as a chairlift that loads in different directions like Findelbahn and an ancient 1961 Mueller chairlift at a large resort with 45 more recent lifts. But in remote areas we also have "nutcracker tows" which terrify Europeans.

Coming from southern norway where most ski resorts are quite small, it's really funny when you mention those old ski lifts… most chair lifts here usually don't slow down at the bottom, and cup lifts are literally everywhere. A ski resort usually has only one chair lift at most. Seeing your lifts having heated seats, moving belts for easy chairlift entrance and even gondolas, it looks really futuristic compared to what we have here
I have to agree with your comment Patrullarve, the mechanical beauty! It’s one of my favourite lifts to work on in summer. As for the lift at Sunnegga which you very rightly commented WTF 😂😂😂 in technical terms we call it a “schrägaufzug”, a combination of ropeway and lift.

If you like old lifts, come to the East Coast of the United States sometime. Smuggler's Notch in Vermont has a couple of double chairlifts that were built in the early 1960s. (And it's "chairlift", not "seatlift"). You should also check out the detachable platter lifts that are common in France, they're _completely_ bizarre and they often go around corners.
I recently learned about an interesting weird type of lift called the 'Skimobile' that used to be at Cranmore Mountain in the US. It was a little train that skiiers rode up the mountain on tracks. But it had lots of practical problems, so it was torn down decades ago.

the best part of the matterhorn that i like is the Aerial tramways. not the gondola lifts, the aerial tramways, the old ones... they express a lot of personality, at least for me. every aerial tramway has different support towers, cabin designs, speeds, sound pitch, etc... if i go there, i would really take the old tramways.. and there are no signs of them shutting down any time soon, as they already modernized the first section, from zermatt to the second station

That lift you called an elevator is called a Standseilbahn. Similar to a train or a Zahnradbahn but not having its own motor, insted it is pulled like a conventional arial tram.
I freaking love these videos! I need more skilifts :P For the hybrid skilift, how does the system differentiate between opening the bar for a chair and the doors for a gondola at the top station?
It does not. The chairs have no mechanics opening or closing anything. Only the gondolas have a little wheel attached to their shaft which connects to a lever (see 7:34). The bar of the chairs is operated manually by the passengers. Check out my video "What you didn't know about ropeways" to get detailed info about the operation of the gondola doors, the system is the same here.
@@sandro-here Aha, so there is no safety mechanism on the bars of a chairlift so people can't jump out halfway? I never tried of course, but I didn't expect that.
@@rublie1426 Yes you could kill yourself by jumping from a chairlift if you absolutely wanted to :-D Maybe, in the US the operator could be sued in such a case but luckily the courts are slightly more reasonable over here. Passengers of the chairlift are expected to use it in the intended manner, otherwise the safety guarantees will not hold. It's like a saw - if you cut off your own arm, it's your problem. Here, if you lift the safety bar, it's your problem. It's considered normal here. It's not easy though - the safety bar can only be opened when everyone got their skis and feet off. Very modern chairlifts additionally have a child stop (a safeguard preventing little children to slip under the bar).
@@sandro-here haha yeah I heard a bunch of fun stuff about the American sueing system where someone put their dog in a washing machine or something, and then sued because it wasn’t in the manual that you can’t put animals in there 🤦♂️. Myself I’m from the Netherlands so I have only skied in Austria and Italy. I guess I sort of already knew that you can lift it whenever you want because that is exactly what you do at the top station of the chairlift. I just assumed there would be some safety mechanism, but I guess they will only add that when someone is stupid enough to hurt themselves by opening over a ravine. How’d you acquire all this interesting knowledge on slilifts? Are you just an amazing observer (I guess the tour helped as well), or did/do you work at one of these lift companies? One of the most entertaining parts of skiing for me is indeed the skilift systems, hence why I’m studying mechanical engineering 😊. I sure hope you end up making more videos showcasing them, because I’ll be the first one to watch 😄
@@rublie1426 I see! No, there really isn't an enforcing safety during the ride usually :-D The way I film is the way I observe. I just look at this stuff closely. When I'm unsure about anything, I ask a staff member, they're very often delighted to explain the machines they are in charge of.
How are the heated seats powered on the Triple Rope Ropeway with endless Loop? Are there batteries somewhere in the cabins? Or is there conductors along the ropeway?
Lately, I've been watching a lot of videos about the building and mechanics of ropeways. Your channel is the only one with so much quality/in-depth content! The engineering is so brilliant. Not a lot of people think about how these things are built/work. For example the splicing of the rope is quite interesting (that it stays together based on friction only, see th-cam.com/video/rji4h0VpToA/w-d-xo.html ). When I went skiing as little kid, I was always fascinated by the components working together in an orchestrated way. Thanks for these videos, hope to see more!
@2:47 Any idea what the second cable/wheels is above the first on this section of the gondola? My friend and I noticed it and trying to work out what it's for!!
It's a rescue cable car. If the main cable car fails, rescue gondolas are attached to the upper cable. Its checks out the stuck gondolas one by one, the people are transferred and brought to the station. I'm not sure why sometimes a secondary rescue cable car is installed and why it is installed in this particular section.
I'm supprized you didn't film the 2 Von Roll Jigback trams . Klien Matterhorn is a Von Roll and the oldest one a 1964 Von Roll tram. To get some real nostalgia, look up Von Roll VR 101s.
