I am genuinely stoked for this series. Mary Seacol is one of my personal heroines, both for her work as a nurse and caretaker of those who needed her, but also for her sheer ballsy gumption.
Its also an interesting footnote, that her husband, was a nephew of legendary British naval hero, Lord-Admiral Horatio Nelson, a fact that she was exceedingly proud of. Her story is awesome, I especially love the part about her reaction to the hotel patron and in the next part, how she basically built her New British Hotel herself from what ever scrap she could salvage and a story of her riding up to the front lines in the Crimea and coming under artillery bombardment, so a group of soldiers shouted to her "Get Down Mother!" to which she replied she would rather be blown to pieces, than give some Russian gunner the satisfaction of seeing her toss herself on the muddy ground.

My mom is also a nurse and the above characterisation of Mary Seacole sounded like her so much it amazes me - shrewd businesswoman but generous, looks down on people sometimes but never hesitates to get her hands dirty while serving the sick. Truly a study in contrast.

There is something about Mary Seacole. It is more than what she did, which in itself was awesome. It is more about who she was on the inside - a giant of a character. She has long been one of my favourite heroes because she defied the culture of her times to be and do what she wanted. I read a book about her some time ago, but your retelling of her story, Extra Credit, is extra special. A million thanks for this.

  • @Urbonov

I can't explain why, but the opening bit, and specifically the imagery of the dying soldier, quietly calling for his mother, instantly inserted some dust into my eyes (if you know what I mean). I know it's just animation, but these extra credits episodes do such wonderful storytelling.

Just one mistake, the panama canal wasn't built until 1914, so the lake of water in the middle of panama shouldn't be there. That's why they built the railroad, actually. The former education secretary tried to remove her from the curriculum supported by publications of a specific political hue. The tories and their press wing hate that her story is taught to UK students (google: Daily Mail Mary Seacole). Their political opponents favour her. This is a situation which goes to heart of our beliefs regarding race relations and representation in the UK. I would define it as the very definition of a political issue

If anyone is interested about the Crimean War itself, the reason why Russia wanted to expand into the middle east was the Black Sea.In Europe, Russia was pretty much landlocked, having only one big port in the far North that would freeze over for half the year, meaning their navy wasn't really a significant force. The black sea however, was only one Istanbul away from the Mediterranean. Needless to say controlling the Crimean region that is now (kinda, sort of) part of Ukraine would be very good for the Russian navy, something England is a bit sensitive about!

Taxation is not thievery. Its paying for services and protection given to you by the government. As well as your countrymen regardless if you directly benefit from it or not.

I would like to participate in this conversation. I want to tell a little anecdote actually from my mother's life. My mother has 4 older sister who all grow up in the same house. The only difference between them is that my mother knew where they live will not help her thrive. She live right when she was old enough to. Now, my mother's siblings feel as though she owe them since her kids aren't in jail or that her family isn't devastatingly in debt. Now I only ask, do you believe my mother should give up her resources since they are her siblings or should she keep the wealth she earned by herself?

+aListers She considered herself a citizen of England. By your logic, my grandparents aren't Canadian citizens because Dutch+Dutch=/=Canadian. Even though they lived here since WWII. They were Dutch-Canadian. As for the second bit...Yeah I can't really defend them on that. I guess us non-brits are prone to accepting that the British flag IS the flag of England even if that's like saying the Canadian Flag is the flag of Nova Scotia.

+aListers Jamaica was a British colony until 1962. My mom and I were both born in Jamaica, but she was born before independence. So she's actually a British citizen, while I am not.
