My guess is that the friend moved to a different part of the country (or came from a different part of the country in the first place, given they had met on pirate radio ships) and they had been progressively less and less regularly in touch with each other, and then somebody of the same name died in the same part of the country the friend was in at some point and the other person's death notice got seen by somebody who knew the same group of friends and who jumped to the conclusion it was this friend and told everyone else, who then continued to believe that was the case for many many years afterwards. Remember the misunderstanding would almost certainly have happened in the first place in the pre-internet era, so to find out any news you either read something in the newspaper (or heard it on the radio/saw it on the tv if they were famous or locally notable), or you got a phone call on your landline or a letter posted to you, so if the phone call/letter from the other person was the only information Tony had in this instance, and he wasn't in the right area of the country to see the right local newspaper to be able to see the death notice for himself then he wasn't in a position to learn any different and therefore just believed what he had been told, and by the time the internet was a thing it probably never occurred to Tony to try looking for information about this friend.
I'm very old 76 years old no savings and asperges syndrome suffer no friends I walk alone so I'm broke most of the time old and nearly out of time so nothing ryms ok Peter hankin it's ok
