Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is another iconic and fundamental episode, weirdly this episode was removed from Netflix, when it was on there , because they misunderstood Chang's character, being a Drow, (dark elf) not somebody in actual black face, which they make a joke about in the episode, but due to possible backlash it was removed from their episode list
Yeah, I feel like overreactions like this actually do more harm than good, because they lend ammunition to the people who want to paint any attempt to be racially sensitive or respectful as hysterical nonsense pushed by nutjobs. A) Chang is made up as a dark elf. B) The uncomfortable similarity to black face is the subject of a joke that Chang is the butt of. C) If we're to view this as unacceptable, what about all the homophobic and racist things that Pierce says? We should be removing like half the episodes on this basis. But people don't get upset because Pierce is a joke, and his views aren't treated sympathetically. Well, Chang is also a joke, and while he isn't actually being racist here, he's portrayed as a clueless weirdo, so what's the problem?
So dumb. Like black lives matter. The cops shouldn't just kill black people. We need more representation. Streaming services: how about we pretend that blackface never existed by removing every episode that has any hint of it? Even though the joke in sitcoms is on the idiocy of blackface and in the case of community, cheng not getting what he looks like to non nerds.

I don't agree with removing the episode, but I also think the argument that it's not "actual black face" is a little misguided. Yes, Chang wasn't intending to be racist, and wasn't intending to dress as a black person. But he's still painting his face pitch-black and going into public like that. It's still absolutely black face, and it's just as wrong and offensive. Black face isn't bad inherently, it's bad because of how it's perceived by people because of it's history, which makes any use of it in a public situation incredible inconsiderate and offensive. However, regardless of that, I think Community clearly frames it in a way that acknowledges this fact. The show itself is not condoning Chang's actions, and if anything is confronting the audience with the intention to make us uncomfortable so that we think about it more.
The episode was banned for Changs dark elf costume. But its such an important episode for people who suffer from being bullied for their body. Neil is one of my favorite side-characters in the show. Remember you reacted angry to "fat Neil" when Duncan said it the first time... and it was hard to not tell you that it becomes a major plotline for one of the best episodes and Duncan wasn´t just a jerk. Most important though: Giant Ears or Tail?
Tail, because it gives you more functionality without really any drawbacks. Like, you can hide a tail pretty easily if you want, but giant ears are always there, and would also be incredibly unattractive and unwieldy with little gain. And a tail could straight-up act like a third arm if you wanted.
214 is the best episode of community(and some might argue of any show ever). this is also the best performance of chevy chase, in his entire life. i loved everything about it. it has comedy, it has drama, it has a sex scene, it has dnd, it touches important topics in a serious way.
The D&D episode on Community. for me, showcased how much better this show was in embracing and respecting the geek subculture than the more successful, Big Bang Theory. Community was a show that was made by geeks, for geeks, and showing we all contain the potential to be geeks in the best way. While up to this point BBT used the geeky subculture, including things like roleplay gaming as the punchline showing how they were "other". Community used the geek trappings to include, where the geek humor of BBT was mostly at the geeks expense
Yes! My friends and I called BBT "nerdface," because it was very much trying to co-opt the trappings of a despised group for clout. I hate hate hate that show. It had as much to do with nerds as blackface has to do with Drow.
@@RamblersIncYou didn’t know that ? Ken Jeong’s son was supposed to play a doctor in Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up but couldn’t do it last minute and Ken, who had acted in college and wanted to be an actor when he was young, also qualified to play a doctor as he was a working doctor, played the role, and well. And he’s been getting acting jobs ever since while maintaining his doctor license. Had a sitcom about himself at one point that I never saw and got cancelled quickly.
D&D episode hurts me bc in college amongst our apartment community and roommates we had someone that was often called fat Jeremy and what seems harmless and though he was in on it it’s hard not to think of him everytime I see this episode and what he really thought.
I hate that this episode was banned, because someone like you with an acquaintance called would have considered if that person wanted that identifier and would not have to carry the guilt of hindsight. I will admit to never learning the name of "white Rudy". Yay for growth from self reflection!
I think that's the major difference that you've mentioned. They have to be in on the joke. Not everyone's able to laugh at their own differences (is differences the right word?).
BTW - the reason they make jokes about Jeff’s hair and forehead is because half of McHale’s hair is fake. He got something done. Look at his early career (burger king commercial for instance) and the top front of his head is bald.
I LOVE YOU, DRUGS It's never really cited as a favorite episode by anyone but I think Celebrity Pharamacology has one of the best written A-plots with the no-to-drugs show. I just love how Pierce and his insecurities and Chang and his craziness work really well here, and how they relate to Annie and Shirley as well
This is one of the most iconic episodes and honestly, I think in part it works so well BECAUSE Pierce is so awful. It's one of the few episodes with actual stakes, and that translates very well because Jeff has grown to the point (I mean, he's kind of the protagonist and point-of-view character) that you actually feel there's something at risk. And while Pierce is always a dick, I really liked the episodes where he was so bad that it actually mattered. It felt like something was just a little bigger. But in any case, yeah, two of my favorite eps. The drugs skit actually IS brilliant; it illustrates that while drugs are fun at first, when you lose control (Chang) your whole life can go off the rails and become much darker than you thing you're getting from Pierce's version of "Drugs." All in all, just creative, big-budget bits.
It's the special D&D episode, which is much loved. Lots of funny lines, with a hint of drama and darkness. The drugs episode is more of a typical sitcom episode. So the two together display the show's wide range. In the lead up to the D&D episode, we see characters referring to Fat Neil (example 2x9 and 2x12).
In the first episode Pierce ruins everything because he's not the centre of attention. In the second episode Pierce isn't invited to play D&D. What could possibly go wrong?
to be fair it was pierce that forced fat neil to face the cause of his depression, and overcome it. if not for pierce, fat neil would have survived for maybe a few more days
@@sabin97 Perhaps. There's no evidence that a routine moment to live for (D&D with others) couldn't have kept him looking up for much longer before potentially working through it another way. Don't get me wrong. I understand what you're saying. But we can't credit Pierce for something when he was intent on having the opposite effect.
@@ivankawnartist actually there is. when people are in that state of mind, a tiny boring moment of complacency only extends their life for a few more days. the only reason fat neil survived was pierce.
