Every member of NFG has some sort of background in the hardcore scene, so these guys have the ability to get heavy when they want. They pretty much invented the "easycore" genre with their song "At Least I'm Known For Something". Their side project, ISHC, is further proof of their heavier side as well.
Chad is such a cool guy, I met him about 20 years ago and he took me into the NFG gig with him (I didnt have a ticket) and into the bands dressing room. A gesture I will appreciate forever.
Cool shit! He still owes me a show damnit since their van broke down in houston in 98/99 and they missed the tour date at out skate park in lafayette louisiana. He didnt even get to experience the crackhead selling "nachos" (just lays potato chips with american cheese microwaved on them). Bet hes super jealous of midtown and Rx bandits who got to experience that great culture lul.
@@markl1910 Matt from The Get Up Kids did the same thing for me once at CBGB's in the dead of winter. It's really nice to see bands actually appreciate their fans.
If I hadn’t seen them in 99 or 2000 with face to face and saves the day I never would have given them the time of day but because they had those roots in hardcore they got a pass and they earned it. I loved everything until Radio Surgery and then I gave up on the genre
I remember at the height of my love for this song, seeing NFG, Midtown and Blink-182 in Idaho back in middle school, and going crazy right when Ian went into that bass line. ❤
The interesting thing about these pop punk bands is how some of their songwriting evolved so quickly. NFG started as a melodic hardcore band, quickly dialed in that signature pop punk sound, and by their second album it’s all catchy ear worms like this.
I fucking loved this record. It wasn't until I was like 15 that I started getting shit from my other punker friends and I had to go off the radar with how much I liked it. The punk scene was always full of very finicky dickheads that told you what you could and couldn't like. What was and wasn't "punk" enough. For my era, it was emo and pop punk. Things are a lot better now. You get older and realize, fuck everyone... I like what I like. I like New Found Glory.
Yeah, I can relate to this getting into the metal circles with a lot of gatekeeping going on. I remember getting flack for listening to 90s pop stuff one time. Who gives a shit? I like what I like. Keep that attitude forever! 👏
Bob I'm guessing youre in my age range (i just turned 40). That was my experience as well. I got into green day first at 9, then the Ramones, sex pistols, clash and transitioned to screeching weasel, the queers, and etc. And that scene fuckin HATED what they considered "not punk." It really messed with my young sense of self and acceptance and i was really closed minded musically. NFG, the starting line, drive thru records basically broke me out of that and reminded me to embrace the truth that the first music I embraced as my own was actually musicals/musical theatre and pop.
I remember reading an intwrview with their bassist saying something to the effect of "I could play complicated basslines but I'd rather play something I can jump around and interact with the fans"
Love that you noticed the hardcore influence, you should check the international superheroes of hardcore, nfgs side project, imagine the aqua bats but hardcore 😂
Now that we've transitioned into the poppier side of 2000's punk, I hope we get to see Midtown, Taking Back Sunday, The Get Up Kids, Saves The Day, etc etc on the channel soon. I'll keep requesting them on Patreon haha
NFG has been such a consistent band for so damn long. Over the next couple albums their sound became heavier and much more hardcore with big breakdowns. An awesome evolution of their sound while maintaining the pop-punk roots. Def recommend continuing with NFG, and would love to see a reaction to "At Least Im Known For Something"!
It's no international superheroes of hardcore! Seriously though all the guys came from the Florida hardcore scene, hell Chad was in Shai hulud. For a "pop punk" band, they damn sure have roots in the harder punk scene. Also, their live show goes way harder than any pop punk band deserves to go.
Looks like you definitely had a lot of fun this time. Great video! I guess I gotta go grab my bass now :) Oh and so many good NFG songs…check out - Hit or Miss or Truth of my youth, or classic My Friends Over You.
NFG for me is one of those bands up there with green day, blink, and the like. They're a band that helped shaped the scene and sound for the time period. That album, the s/t was MASSIVE for me and my friends (i just turned 40). If you want to check out more, I'm gonna shout out "forget My Name" and "something I call personality." Neither song is too complex bass wise, but i think they're prime examples of how i think their bass player Ian is better than he lets on, but also knows theres a time and place to add some flair.
Yep one of my all time fav albums. Their next album “sticks and stones” is probably even more legendary. The pop punk dudes never get enough credit for how creative they are. Like sure they aren’t the most super technical players but there’s way more to songwriting than that. And even though Jordan’s voice is a bit polarizing, I don’t think it’s debatable that he’s awesome at melodies. I love him personally but I also love super young whiny Tom Delonge from Cheshire Cat and dude ranch lol.
This definitely unlocked a core memory for me. NFG used to be one of my favorite bands, but I grew out of them eventually and haven't listed to them in 20 years. Great analysis!
Same for me. I did not remember how well made their songs were. What I don't really dig anymore is kind of their vibe, but the arrangements are very thoughtful.
NFG is a pretty polarizing band in the punk world, but I've always had a soft spot for them. The blend of poppy punk and hardcore is super fun to me.....the cheesy lyrics can be a little much though so I get why people aren't into it :D
Coming home is great and I feels always shows how comfortable they are in what they do... but it's definitely the album that strays the farthest from their base sound
I was at the record release party for this album. It was in a Tower Records parking lot somewhere in LA/OC (can't remember which one) and they played a full set. So rad.
Dude from NFG has always been an underrated bass player. You should check out NFG's more hardcore style stuff. They mix the two styles really well. Their guitar player was the singer for Shai Hulud, a hardcore band from Florida. Thats a band you should check out if youre looking amazing players.
Great band to explore more of. Sticks and Stones, Catalyst, and Not Without a Fight are all good albums to try out. They have a heavy element for sure, along with the sugary poppiness. As others have mentioned, "At Least I'm Known for Something" and "Such a Mess" have elements that would later be labeled (in a term I think coined by the band) easycore. A hardcore heaviness + happy kind of sound. Other bands incorporated heavier elements in a pop or melodic punk context, including Strung Out who to my ears seems like they could have been an influence on NFG, but something like "Such a Mess" is that textbook easycore sound, which might be fun to explore on the channel
First time i saw NFG was around the time this album came out, they opened for Less Than Jake and Anti-Flag and i wanna say teen idols was on the set as well. Became a fan after that.

New Found Glory is a band I've been aware of since the early 2000's here and there but in a weird way, they are kinda less popular compared to a lot of other similar Pop Punk and Emo bands that would come around even in the same years... they are often credited for not just being Pop Punk but a type of Poppy Hardcore and Emo-ish songs. Tbh I always wished I had done a proper deep dive into their stuff but always end up not doing it... and it is 25 years later, and I keep hearing their name every once in awhile to say... oh yeah, I think I sorta liked some of their songs

This era of "punk" was really abysmal. I was barely a teen, trying to emulate my favorite Fat Wreck bands...Lagwagon, Strung Out etc....and this pop punk shite was what was popping off. Shame. I remember online bullying them via email and the bass player scolded me by saying "what would your parents think..". I just found it weak, inauthentic and antithetical to the Punk Rock I knew....which was a rejection of the mainstream/pop world. NFG were Backstreet Boys goes Punk, and I found it repulsive.
