Jeremiah is a clear-minded thinker. Specific examples & focusing in on the "minimum viable idea" before building off of it. Atomic elements of the moment-to-moment player experience, like these, account for a shocking percentage of player enjoyment. Around 50% in my experience. Astounding how far juicing can elevate even the most simplistic games.

For anyone considering adding these, remember accessibility and at the minimum add a setting to disable it. If you want to be extra nice you could expose the intensity of every individual feature.

A fantastic example of roguelike juice is Soulash. Wonderful spell effects and a punchy UI make the game feel far better than it has any right to.

Brogue is unicode not ascii :p I want his juicy ascii game. Smallest Quest is supposed to be minimal & juicy.

Alternative title: how to make your game annoying for autistic players. I almost laughed out loud at 19:45 when you said "you might not always notice" screenshake - I don't get how anyone wouldn't notice it! I guess neurotypical people just have duller senses?
I'm mostly just teasing, I enjoyed the talk and I got some things out of it. Just, for people making games with these flashy, bouncy animations, please make sure there's a setting to disable them. Thanks!

It has nothing to do with being autistic, and no, normal people do not have 'duller senses'. Everyone notices this awful cartoony animation style. Every adult thinks "yeugh is this game for kids?"

Some games gets us tired just by watching...
