    My favorite part is that in the 27 years he's been obsessed with catching her it's likely he's mentioned her name to his daughter. And she chose to name her daughter after the person responsible for how he became.
    Also she said she can't change him killing her because she can't change the past when that's 100% what she's trying to do in the first place.

      We don't know if he mentions Rya to his daughter since they are estranged. And before that, she was just a baby, so he probably wouldn't have mentioned cases to her regardless.
      In terms of stopping him from killing her, it cannot work because she's going backwards through time and he's going forwards. He kills her the first time they meet. Whereas, the timeline she's trying to change is in the distant future.

    Ended up watching the movie, and while I can say that the acting was surprisingly good, the premise is just too stupid. The movie breaks its own rules quite a bit, including this idea that, "You can't change time, what has happened/will happen must happen" and then *immediately* let's you know that Rya's mission is to literally change time, which ends up changing the timeline.
    Thomas survives being pushed out of an airplane, the movie immediately forgives and forgets Rya killed Maddox like, "oopsie poopsie!"
    The commentary on modern America being full of radicals is a bit on the nose, pretty much insinuating that a bomb going off was enough to start a civil war which felt unrealistic to me.
    Overall 5/10 movie, good recap.

      It all depends on what time travel theory you subscribe to. In a single timeline theory, this paradox exists. But, if you believe in parallel universes or timelines, then each change in the past creates a new timeline. Her changing things could create a new, better timeline even though her old one is still bad. That bad timeline still existing makes it so that she always goes back to fix the past and create the new timelines

    • @maddieb2512
      @maddieb2512 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Inscipio Yeah I personally love time travel stories that deal with this paradox. Its one of the most interesting subgenres of science fiction to me. The recap was good but this is probably one of those movies that you need to watch the whole thing to really get a grasp on the rules (and therefore the consequences) of this universe and to really understand what's going on. And even though I know the big twist now I think this still might be a movie worth checking out.

    • @XenithShadow
      @XenithShadow ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Inscipio The primary issue is that she travel's futher back with each jump, which mean's she has literally no free will at all since her action's have already occured. Also she isn't actually his grand daughter in his timeline unless his obsession with hunting her down an no actual effect on his daughters life at all, leading to her still marrying the same person. Therefore he doesn't even kill his own grand daughter he kill's a potentential grand daughter.
      You are correct that there is likely 1 timeline with 3 branches each starting from the point she jumpe back. 2 of them functionally don't exist since her first and second jump initially would have had her jumping back earlier in that timeline yet. This does run into a slight issue where she get's replicated over multiple timelines, unless non function timelines colapse due to being paradox's.
      I guess the main point is that jumping back in time in interacting with people who have interacted with you in their own past but your future implies that noone in the movies setting actually has any freewill.
      For example it's physically impossible for her to die on her first 2 trip's back in time since she alway's makes the third jump back within that timeline.

      No, she can't stop him from killing her because she died in the past.
      She is time travelling to the past while the world is going forward into the future.
      So, the "first time" she time travelled into the past, she met the grandad in the beach, the second time was when she escaped in the motorcycle and she was injured in her hand by the bullets from the grandad, the third time she time travelled into the past was where the aircraft was kept (or something like that), then, she time travelled into the past for the last time when she was killed in the subway.

    I always thought of time travel as a separate entity every specific moment in time you jump to does not influence the future due to the grandfathers paradox. So in reality she changes nothing since her timeline literally can't be saved. But you could avoid the future disaster. But at the same time preventing a war may also lead to a plague or maybe extreme climate change due to the butterfly effect of her actions.

    • @quinsey9211

      while butterfly effect is a thing in reality the effects it would have would be more a quantity thing. its not about the major changes. thats a movie thing. is it possible to lead to major changes sure. but is every murder on earth leading to the end of the world suddenly? no. then it wouldnt if you time traveled to do it either. millions of things would eventually be different but that vast majority of them would be ultimately mundane.

      Yeah, a contested POTUS election distracts the nation sufficiently to embolden Winnie the Poo to invade Taiwan. A preemptive strike destroys enough of our Pacific fleet to leave us on the backfoot, the first time that's happened in conventional warfare since WWII. But this time we consider a tactical nuke.
      I really hope we take the loss and don't nuke the Chinese navy no matter how beneficial it is. They "only" have a few hundred nukes and at most a only a few missiles that can carry a nuke to US territory, and even then it's "only" Hawaii. Which they try and we shoot down.
      Doesn';t reall matter tho because what comes next will make WWII look like the Spanish American War. 60 to 100 million people died in WWII. If WWIII kills less than a billion, we shall consider ourselves lucky.
      Bc even if the armed conflicts don't kille that many, the resulting disruption to the global supply chain that feeds, clothes, houses, and heals over half the planet will could kill hundreds of millions in a few months.
      War in Ukraine kills hundreds of thousands in Africa and Southern Asia. What happens when there's war in the wheat fields of Eastern Europe AND the plains of North America AND the rice paddies of Asia? When nations divide and region battles region for the rights to pump the trickle that is the once-mighty Colorado? When the strongest most stable nation in history devolves in just a few decades to the point that its western states INVADE its eastern states to take its endless freshwater sources.
      It will be - once again - up to us to pull the world back from the brink. But we aren't a cohesive unit anymore. We are veering sharply toward dissolution in our lifetime.

      @@thedragonlee76 Actually no. It's just the standard excuse writers use when they want to make something about time travel, but don't want to have to deal with any of the actual ramifications of time travel.
      Either time travel CAN let her change the past, or it can't. Here, the movie is expressly trying to have both sides.

    • @thedragonlee76
      @thedragonlee76 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dragonstryk7280 There's alot of paradoxical theories...1,Terminator...John Conner sent his father into the past and thus so he would be born and he knew Reese was going to die.2,The old black and white Twilight Zone episode which showed a time traveler trying to change major events like trying to kill Hitler,but he is always stopped because time stopped him.And then there's the multiverse theory,where if you,the time traveler,change things in the past,you would be the only one to know. And then,there's the invisible time traveler theory and that theory is that time travelers have appeared throughout history but they don't change or interact and all and they do is just observe history.

    • @dragonstryk7280
      @dragonstryk7280 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thedragonlee76 Except NONE of those are being used here. 1. John Connor is closing a loop created by previous time travel. 2. The Twilight Zone had time as an outside force, and multiverse theory doesn't apply here, or else it's useless, since it won't even effect anything for the person killing all of these people.
      As well, we get the "It already happened, so it can't be changed" line FROM the Time Traveler who is traveling to change what already happened.
      It's lazy crap.
      About Time did it better, where the MC could really change things, but hits an issue after he has his first child. Essentially, throw anything off before the child is born, and you'll likely be coming back to a very different child, cause there are too many biological variables to be able to guarantee the same child if you change things.

    Problems witb time travel is that usually no matter how hard or far back you travel you will only escalate events to happen sooner than they were supposed to for the most part. Everything is being built up to essentially repeat themselves anyway with the doctor making the poison and finding out the truth, the daughter being born, and possibly due to him delaying her by those few seconds to minutes of exposition is what will cause the bomber to still get away with it anyway...which is funny and stupid because why wouldn't their first target be the very man that activated and basically made the bomb to begin with...

    So the year she was born was actually her first time travel hop, she went back in time again for the second time where she ended up killing the partner and the final time she hops back is when she’s actually killed by the main cop. The story is set in stone, we are just seeing it from the perspective of the main cop leading to the events of what happened. This is why he can’t save her, because the him that sees her is from the past, a past that doesn’t even know she exists, if he doesn’t kill her then everything else in the future would cease to exist. Him killing her is what causes her to exist.

    • @bugwar5545

      So basically she fails.
      Cuz if she had succeeded, there wouldn't be a reason for her to jump back.
      But if she doesn't jump back, then the events happen and she has to jump back.

    • @r3a1itygamezz14

      @@bugwar5545 So basically, a paradox is a never ending loop. She doesn’t exist without the war and the war doesn’t exist without her. What we watch in this movie is the first loop in the time travel sequence but the second time of the timeline being shown, we never see the world that leads to the war existing. This girl was tasked with going back and killing certain people to prevent a war, in the first play of the timeline these people were never killed and responsible for the war, she now time travels to kill these people, she succeeds however is killed on her final trip back in time. The timeline that she existed in is now completely different to the one watched in this movie because there wasn’t a time traveler initially in the first timeline. She only can exist if she dies because she goes further and further back in time before her “actual” existence, that’s assuming it’s a multiverse though

      So in the 'second time', she grows up never seeing the events that cause her to jump back to prevent them. Because she doesn't jump, the events that caused the war proceed without hindrance.
