The fact Cardi's album is higher then Nas debut is ridiculous illmatic was a real game changer not only lyrically but as far as assembling all the best producers at the time to work on one perfect album was unheard of.

The biggest exclusions from the list I can think of are 808's & Heartbreak, Nothing Was the Same, Rodeo, CLPPNG, Atrocity Exhibition, The Impossible Kid, I think all of those could have totally replaced some of these choices.

Really liked the idea @ 6:40 of having of doing regional lists that outlines pioneers. I know nothing about this genre, but I got into Tierra Whack & Dave & I've been trying to use lists like these to help me explore, but they're too big to be useful guides
This list is a massive disrespect to hip-hop as a whole. Some of these placements just show how any mainstream rappers can become one of the “greats” in the genre without putting in any work and it really has a negative impact of what Hip-Hop is and actually some of the albums have no real impact on the culture. When you’re putting Illmatic before Cardi B then you can’t take this list seriously at all man. Music is subjective but this is actually wrong.

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert was the only album on here from the UK, and that’s disgraceful how Konnichiwa, Boy In The Corner, Made In The Manor and Psychodrama didn’t make it, and I know that she was the only one there just because she is a woman and they had a stupid agenda of getting every female rapper possible on here though I’m not saying her album isn’t a classic and it actually should be much higher in the list. It's not that they brought on every female rapper here. They just really wanted to appeal to a lot of people. They didn't just put every female rapper here, they put EVERYONE here. They put Travis, Future, thugger, 21 savage, lil uzi, playboi carti, juice wrld, rich homie quan, rae sremm, migos, chief keef and just about every other trap nigga. Only 2, maybe three of these artists made an album I say is top 200 all time.
Boy in da Corner is such a good album too, influential AND a classic. That did stand out to me. That being said, I'm super glad SIMBI made the cut, it's easily one of my favorite records of the past 5 years

Idk if it’s "universally considered a disappointment". Some critics liked it, especially RS which explains its inclusion on the list. It’s not even that bad of an album. Uzi is just one of those artists that have a fickle fanbase that suffers from 2015-17 nostalgia. If their recent music doesn’t sound like anything from the good old times then it’s automatically dismissed as trash.

As a huge rock fan I will say that Rolling Stone is even out of touch for rock itself. The view that they are stuck in the classic rock format of 70s rock exists since the 80s I think. Even for rock I would suggest going instead with Pitchfork and the british magazine NME

An old head can believe whatever they want but from my eyes those albums stand up to whatever albums they could possibly list. And that’s the beauty of music because neither of us would be right cuz it’s all subjective.
To me, if we're talking about the greatest albums of all time, which implies some kind of objectivity going on, pioneering albums are a must have. To me, it shows a grounding in the history of not only hip-hop in its musical sense, but in its cultural sense too. Hip-hop is and always was more than just the music itself. It needed more to crossover and last for 40 years. While I do agree with you that the music itself is very important, in my opinion, that isn't enough given the context. We're talking the greatest albums of *all time* not just a list of hip-hop releases.

These lists aren't compiled with honest criticism, they instead think about where fans will want to find their personal favorite records and try to satisfy that as diplomatically as possible, resulting in new records that are hot with younger listeners being overrepresented

I had a physical subscription to RS from '02-'06. They had already basically died out and were relying on The Most Important lists every other issue. So on one hand I'm glad they're able to name 200 rap albums, but I'm also not surprised to see this list come from the same ppl who told me to listen to The Doors every single day for four years.

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert was the only album on here from the UK, and that’s disgraceful how Konnichiwa, Boy In The Corner, Made In The Manor and Psychodrama didn’t make it, and I know that she was the only one there just because she is a woman and they had a stupid agenda of getting every female rapper possible on here though I’m not saying her album isn’t a classic and it actually should be much higher in the list. EDIT: I forgot The Streets but I never viewed them as rappers anyway
It's not that they brought on every female rapper here. They just really wanted to appeal to a lot of people. They didn't just put every female rapper here, they put EVERYONE here. They put Travis, Future, thugger, 21 savage, lil uzi, playboi carti, juice wrld, rich homie quan, rae sremm, migos, chief keef and just about every other trap nigga. Only 2, maybe three of these artists made an album I say is top 200 all time.
Boy in da Corner is such a good album too, influential AND a classic. That did stand out to me. That being said, I'm super glad SIMBI made the cut, it's easily one of my favorite records of the past 5 years

These videos gave me a new reason of why I prefer to use the timeline format when I'm making a Spotify playlist and, in a perfect world, it would be the standard format because timelines are a more fitting (and fun) format in order to say "So, here's how this music genre got started and how we got here through the decades". And it's not only because of my chronological order' obsession, I legit am convinced of it.

Idk if it’s "universally considered a disappointment". Some critics liked it, especially RS which explains its inclusion on the list. It’s not even that bad of an album. Uzi is just one of those artists that have a fickle fanbase that suffers from 2015-17 nostalgia. If their recent music doesn’t sound like anything from the good old times then it’s automatically dismissed as trash.

As a huge rock fan I will say that Rolling Stone is even out of touch for rock itself. The view that they are stuck in the classic rock format of 70s rock exists since the 80s I think. Even for rock I would suggest going instead with Pitchfork and the british magazine NME

I agree with a lot of the points you made but you seem to be valueing how much it pioneered the culture more than how great the album was, because I’d say without a shadow of a doubt an album like DS2 or IYRTITL deserves some placement on a list like this. An old head can believe whatever they want but from my eyes those albums stand up to whatever albums they could possibly list. And that’s the beauty of music because neither of us would be right cuz it’s all subjective.
To me, if we're talking about the greatest albums of all time, which implies some kind of objectivity going on, pioneering albums are a must have. To me, it shows a grounding in the history of not only hip-hop in its musical sense, but in its cultural sense too. Hip-hop is and always was more than just the music itself. It needed more to crossover and last for 40 years.
While I do agree with you that the music itself is very important, in my opinion, that isn't enough given the context. We're talking the greatest albums of *all time* not just a list of hip-hop releases.

I had a physical subscription to RS from '02-'06. They had already basically died out and were relying on The Most Important lists every other issue. So on one hand I'm glad they're able to name 200 rap albums, but I'm also not surprised to see this list come from the same ppl who told me to listen to The Doors every single day for four years.
