Why 30fps Is GREAT On Steam Deck

  • Valve's Steam Deck has a wonderful 30fps frame limiter, and it proves that smooth frame pacing is always better than higher framerates. I tested Cyberpunk 2077 and Borderlands 3 to show you the difference.

'Bad frame pacing' caused by a fluctuating frame rate w/ v-sync on literally would not be an issue if Valve had a) allowed users to turn off the culprit v-sync (would result in screen tearing above 60 FPS), or b) implemented AMD FreeSync (would eliminate both stutter below 60 FPS & tearing above). I suspect the reason Valve didn't bother is because it prefers to incentivise users to cap the FPS rather than constantly pushing the system to its max & draining the battery quicker.

I do see your point! However, as I mentioned, my experience is that Gamescope's frame limiter is EVEN BETTER than most in-game limiters. So regardless of the FreeSync argument, Valve is doing something very right here.

@@LinuxForEveryone Oh yeah I have no doubt that Valve's compositor is much better than what's provided by in-engine capping solutions, I merely mean to express even extra flexibility would be appreciated for those of us carrying around an external battery or something. The steam version likely has integration w/ proton, while in-game limiters have to go through the DirectX layer which probably doesn't have the tightest sync. Another reason may be the game limiter goes into a spinlock/idle pattern with the steam limiter yielding to background functions. (or vice versa). Details as they are released should prove interesting, expecially with community involvement and refinement.

I hope Valve adds two features:
    - 50Hz refresh rate to play at 50fps which is ever so slightly less demanding than 60 and to most people is almost indistinguishable (and if you can feel a difference then just don't use that mode)
    - 40fps cap for 60Hz refresh - this gives you a "regular judder" which is a lesser evil. It's possible to play at locked 40fps at 60Hz and the brain will filter out a regular judder.

  • @dimitriid
    @dimitriid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

There´s even one more option that really helps on low power gpus or apus only and that´s variable refresh rate: it makes a big impact on that 30 to 60 range where many of these APUs can end up landing on performance so I recommend you explore that for an even more fluid experience. It might be a bit harder on battery but if docked I think it should be encouraged.

As was stated above, VRR isn't supported in any handheld pc for battery reasons (which as you wrote could not matter when plugged).
Furthermore, VRR makes a lot more sense above 60 fps where the difference between say 60 fps and 100 fps isn't as noticeable. But even with VRR, going from 30 to 60 that's half the frame time.
The point is, if it's gonna get close to 30, you might as well just get used to that and accept that 30 fps is good enough.

Now I'm curious in seeing game performance/battery in games with in-game frame cap. If Gamescope had a granular FPS cap akin to Rivatuner I'd be sooo happy. Sometimes 40fps feels better than 30, and 48-50 can actually be good enough pre-60. I wonder if there is a technique to fake framerate of a monitor and then apply a 1/2 or 1/3 vsync on it to get diferent values. (Probably still a stuttery mess and what I say makes no sense).

Perfectly framepaced 30 fps with no input lag has always been fine, except for games like CoD or the new Doom games that are made to run at 60 fps.
IMO, if a game is "authored" to run at 30 fps, then higher FPS will usually result in a better experience, but 30 is perfectly fine too.

I’m noticing far more chop/stutter in the Gamescope footage, like notable increments in the frame delivery, rather than uncapped running fairly smoothly. I dunno if it’s TH-cam’s trickery between compression and trying to display on my phone, but I do know that a video capture of the screen via a camera shows that solid 30fps really is good and when it’s uncapped is when it can feel really bad. I saw that with some of the Intel Xe graphics benchmarks that technically had a higher frame rate but the frame pacing was nauseating.

Use the steamdeck refresh rate unlocker you are missing that using gamescope framecap introduced intolerable 2-3 frames of lag over using 30hz aiming is awful when not changing refresh rate and using software to cap

@ No really, I'm not being sarcastic, what I'm saying is on PC, 30fps is mostly crap because inconsistent frame time while on console it looks fluid.
A good 30fps was something missing for entry level PC. Making a budget PC is now easier because you can target a 30fps experience and still having an ok experience. (It has to run SteamOS 3.0 though)
And for the Steam Deck, it was a big question I had because we know it won't handle the heaviest games at 60fps, and it will be even more true in the future, so knowing we can enjoy gaming at 30fps on it is a huge positive.

I hope in the future that games that are being made on PC as well as console PC gets a console version for their system. What I mean is you know how searching games that are I guess from any game that you play on PC on Steam and you plug in a controller it obviously automatically switches to the whole controller configuration scheme as in you can't like change anything what I mean is like for example Fallout or BioShock crazy games I think I'll form this PS3 Xbox 360 generation as soon as you plug a controller in Ipswich estate to controller you can still have that for me and stuff but you can't actually change it unless you disable the controller and then do it that way so what I was trying to say if there was a way where you know how consoles always up to my crazy for the best for the consoles right if PC could have that ability as well so when the future we could either the same that what God of war has done when going to walk home to PC you have have original graphical settings and then you have high and ultra right so something like that but for PC housing like if the games are going to be created on PC and also console the PC developers could actually you know put in so we could have a very low setting a low setting a medium setting there we could have a console graphical setting then we could have a high and could have a ultra right so that the console settings going to be we know was going to be summer going to be BDM and summer going to be high as summer going to be ultra right but at least then like we could actually get good optimisation because it will be on par with what the console has had at least then in the future if well people who who come from console why not staying experience and don't want to basically like you know car going around with the system or what I did have an ability to just put it on the console equivalent weight in a concert optimisation for PC and you can have fun and I will definitely hope what valve is trying to do and also what all these other handheld PC people have been trying to do for years right will trying to get the best out of what they could I maybe this will definitely give the PC or the people that want to switch from console to PC the ability to still feel at home just still feel like yeah they have their ability to actually enjoy their games even if it hard was not high enough all be that have the same capabilities of what the console the council next to them have right so in a way it will be a win-win

It's upsetting the deck can't really support 60fps without slowdown and jumping in addition to huge battery drain... By comparison the switch manages 60fps on some AAA titles and even 1080p 60fps on very select AAA games, even though they're optimized, it's still something you can't ignore 60fps beats 30fps in every way
