174 - Epoxy Resin Art - Step by Step Tutorial How to create 3D Whales with Movement in the Ocean

- After many requests I have decided to creating this Step by Step Tutorial on how I create Whales swimming in the Ocean. It is such a rewarding piece to create, it connects you to Mother Nature and Positivity. There is a delicate balance with creating a piece like this which is not over working it.
Easy to say right? This video show's the human side of me, I over work it and loose the Whales for a bit. I have decided to keep this part it to show you how to keep going with Resin until you are happy with the end result.
It's quite liberating, once you get over the fear over failing. Resins is expensive and no one want to waste time or money but sometimes you need to keep going and learn from your mistake. In the end this piece turn out amazing but I had to fail to get there.
You can create a stunning piece like this in 3 layer. Some people may appreciate just one layer and that's ok. Make your art what you want and stick within your budget.

They own a boat fleet for over 50 years that takes locals and visitors out to our Channel Islands. Along the ride to the islands we spot many whales and dolphins and sea lions. The rock is placed at our beach near surfer's point. Momma would be proud! She loved the whales and our beach..so thank you for the great inspiration!!!

She owned that business for 50 plus years. She loved her whales and we see many here. It turned out awesome! Thx!

I’m so glad to see someone besides me wearing a mask. Some people don’t understand. Resin is very bad. I should know. I got really sick from it. From being stupid. I didn’t like wearing the mask. I wear that long sleeve shirt and My pants and of course, my heavy mask and glasses I learned the lesson the hard way
Its why I stayed a way from Resin last 2 year, I have dabbled but I was over the sickness, the waste and the chemical. Don't get me wrong its still beautiful to work with and the right protections and being responsible.

I do have a few things that I continue to revisit, whales peacocks, oceans they tend to calm me. Glad you remember seeing the original one I did. I thought they looked terrific after the waves 🌊 were swimming around the whales. Not sure if we’re supposed to stop at that or continue to 7 or more paintings and coverings.

I am very happy you did this second video although i did catch on on how to do it but thanks again for doing it again on video now watch i was custom framing for years and professional photography so trust me i have this thing that i hate when people throw out a good frame so trust me i will be using them all up lol you wont be able to stop me (smiling) :P
I would say practise practise and have fun discovering your way of creating it. Sorry (even though you enjoyed) didnt catch how to create it. Would you find value in a more step by step process for something like this? What a great profession you have, I love a good frame and always see the beauty in old one to upcycle. I love anything to do with the ocean scenes or maybe some birds too which ever suits you ... for me im getting started on another one already while this one is drying .

Love your work. It really helping me learn lots. Can you describe what thing you have the resin piece placed in to work on it? Did you make it to stop resin leaking over the edges? And secondly what do you use to cover your piece when it’s drying?!?
Hello, glad you are enjoying and learning lots. I work with Resin inside an MDF box that Neil made for me to stop me leaking everywhere, I am a messy worker lol. It has a base and sides that are made by MDF off cuts, I have a large and a medium size. I cover my work with a lid Neil made that covers the top, all MDF. Hope that helps

Sharon, this is absolutely beautiful. Too bad u put it on mdf. Find a wood worker to use plywood and wood to border.
Why don't you like MDF? I think i was upcycling a old frame

Resin hates acrylic? 90% of the art on TH-cam used acrylic and most warned of oil paint burning.
It depend on the brand if you use it in the right way you will have no problems but I have experience marshmallow effect and thermal events

What you thought was a mistake turned out great. The 4 layers gave depth to the piece. Although I get what you are saying. Watching video for research, I want to have one layer without resin so it looks like the whale is breaching. (well not a whale but a shark) Thanks for sharing your process.

When you were putting the waves in on the whales artwork, i frieked the second time with the white, I thought you were gonna do it again. I was yelling at the screen "No, no no stop! Enough, enough!" It looked great in the end.
I do love it when I get an emotional reaction with my creative process as it show you were engaged in the art and saw beauty at different stages. Sometimes when your in it you focus on the journey and not what's in front of you. I sometime wish i had a magic rewind button. Glad you enjoyed the end result, come back and see me again soon.

You know what… I think it might be possible to paint your whales on a piece of clear cellophane type sheet and then lay it where you want. I haven’t yet tried this yet, but I’m betting the cellophane will be invisible under the resin - of course I could be wrong, but I’m going to give it a go. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 😊

Really realistic whales. I'm going to have to come back to this later once I've gotten comfortable with my sea effects.
I haven't actually started doing resin work yet. I still have to find time in the reno to actually do a first resin test to see if I really have all I need to get started!

Beautiful video. Just a suggestion, if you find yourself overworking a piece, you could simply pour more clear over the whales to push the colours away and save repainting them :) Love this video!

I find boards and upcycle, hope that helps and thank you for your support

Hello Sharon oh my thank you so much for yet another FULL DETAIL TUTORIAL! I have got to hurry and get the rest of my supplies before I forget what I learnt from you. Again thank you so very much. Absolutely gorgeous spot on 3D painting! Forgive me in advance if I asked you this before. Do you ever use PRIMARY ELEMENTS & for the whites the interference whites made by colourarte? ( although in a beach scene the interference whites because they're so shimmery probably wouldn't work for the white I wouldn't think?) But I've seen quite a few paintings done like Dutch pours and the colors and the glitter and the Shimmer they produce it's just phenomenal. I really want to buy a set thanks again
