    i remember just being completely entranced by the intro as a 9 year old. absolutely burned itself into my brain in a way that very few other things did - ironically, it's probably what primed me to have Ace Combat 04 burned into my brain the same way.

      Lol I did the same. I used to put a portable micro system on the bed, plug the small PC speakers (those small boxes that sit on the desk) beside my ears and sleep to this. Every night. I don't know how I could do it. This OST pumps me up now, I'd never fall asleep to it. I guess 25 years change you.

    A quick google of Barry Leitch will make you aware he was responsible for some of the best sound tracks and games of your childhood! lotus 2, Double Dragon, back to the future, silkworm, robocop etc! Give this man a medal :) .. he's up there with Yuzo Koshiro, Patrick Phelan, Frank Klepacki, Stephane Picq and Purple Motion in my opinion for services to music on a soundcard

      After working at Ocean, I moved to Origin Systems in Texas (makers of Strike Commander), and got to work with the very talented Nenaud Vugrinec (composer of SC). I used to tease him that my guitar sound was better than his on the MT32, he played his a lot better tho - but don't tell him I said that ;) Strike Commander was awesome !

      @@BarryLeitch The legend himself! Dude, thank you _so much_ for the gift of your music throughout the years. My family's very first computer (Windows) came with a few free game CDs, & TFX was one of them (what a bonus!). Fantastic game, mind-blowing graphics & physics at the time! So difficult & complex for little kids to learn, but we got pretty far in it eventually. But the music is what really hooked me! And after learning that I could put the disc in a CD player, I would jam to this soundtrack SO often (along with Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, which was the whole reason we convinced our parents to get a computer after playing it at my uncle's house).
      You (& several other talented composers & game developers) added so much amazing quality to my often crappy childhood, making it more bearable, to the point that I still long for many of those days despite the often awful conditions. Gaming & all its connected art forms have been my saving grace, & still remain that while I struggle with decades of chronic health problems. Listening to this again brings me such fond memories of my then-blossoming affinity for aerial combat games/movies/shows, & the daydreams I'd have of just flying with wings. As well as re-appreciating its thoughtful, ebbing/flowing & dynamic compositions & the general feelings they evoke, with the new perspective of an adult. Thanks, from the bottom of my heart.
      (P.S. - I know from an interview with BOING magazine that you left Ocean before TFX & Inferno shipped [& that "some muppet" didn't use your preferred MT32 version of this soundtrack when the CD-ROM version was put together], but I'll try asking anyway: What was with the 3 Alien Sex Fiend songs at the end of the TFX CD? I don't think they happened anywhere in the game. Was there a preview for Inferno on there that I'd failed to find that would play those tracks? Or were they just a little bonus treat for listeners?)

    • @BarryLeitch
      @BarryLeitch 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@ZaCloud-Animations___she-her Thank you so much for the very kind words :) I think the bonus tracks were just put there to fill up the CD and offer a sneak peek at Inferno, as they were both being developed by D.I.D at the time, so it made sense to cross promote. At the time we thought the graphics were amazing, and had a blast just flying the spaceship around as we were writing the tunes. Although now of course they seem so incredibly basic and dated. We cranked out the Inferno tunes over 6 weeks with ASF and me, and all the synths Ocean had at the time as well as Mrs Fiend's own sampler she brought with her. All written on an Amiga with Octomed, and a midi port :)

      @@BarryLeitch Wow, thanks for getting back to me so quickly! 😃 It's so cool that you're still so active in the community, from what I'm seeing around the net now that I'm paying attention.
      That's so neat that you guys immersed yourselves in the game to inspire your compositions. No wonder there's so much authentic mood there; capturing the essence of the gameplay itself, amplifying how it FELT. I'm not sure how usual that was/is in the industry, but that's such a meaningful approach. 🙂
      The devs really outdid themselves with those games, in terms of gameplay (complex as it was) & ship/environment graphics. Really ahead of their time. They do show their age now, but I was blown away back then too. They helped pave the way for even greater things. 😎
      I do love that we got those Inferno bonuses on this already stellar TFX soundtrack. And even though I know this isn't your favorite version, the nostalgia of this one still makes it dear to me. 😊 But I'll be giving your ideal version some listens too. Might take some getting used to, since this has been what's played on & off in my head for almost 30 years. 😉
      Take good care of yourself. And thanks again for adding such awesomeness to countless people's lives.

      The fighting theme was a MIDI track within the game folder I believe, the rest of the soundtrack was playing from CD. But only if your CD drive had an audio cable connected to the soundcard and only if you selcted CD sound in the settings. Otherwise, it would just play an inferior MIDI version of the CD tracks, but those were at least more dynamic and fit the situation better.

      @@NesrocksGamingVideos He gave an interview for BOING magazine, which is available in English on a very old-fashioned but still active 🕸site (hasn't been updated to HT-tee-pee-ESS yet, LOL, but it's safe to just browse). I'm not sure if he or someone else chose the sounds of the general MIDI version, but that one was indeed chosen by someone else ("some muppet", in his words, LOL) for the CD-ROM release, instead of the original MT32 version he preferred, since he'd already left the company when his work was done, before the game released.
      I too might prefer the CD version, but it also could be from nostalgia since that's the one I played & cherished as a kid. But I'll give the other version a bit more listens to make up my mind over time. :3

      @@mastershredder2002 He's an artist who had his intended vision & didn't like that being tampered with. I can totally understand that. Though yeah, upon more listening, I really do prefer the CD version objectively. The soundfonts make it feel more like you're actually flying. More light & airy in fitting cases. Certain drums & elements come out more balanced, or in ways that give it a more suitable energy for the pacing & feel of the gameplay. All my opinion, of course.
