Great advice for anyone entering Golden Demon! This was my first time entering since 2012 and the level was absolutely insane! The biggest thing to take away from it I think is to come back next time taking what you've learnt and try to get to the next level. I remember seeing your piece in the cabinets and it's really cool!

Good advice for any painting competition submissions! Your piece is still a heck of a fine effort and as long as you enjoyed the process then you can count that as a personal win for sure! If you learned something along the way then that is even better. I occasionally paint models to a display quality so I can appreciate the struggle of the sheer amount of time it takes to slowly glaze and adjust the values on a piece to get it as smooth and as close to what your minds eye envisions. Talking over the years with competition painters, I think the best advice I was ever given was that if you are going to try to place in a specific competition (GD for example), then start working the day after the last one ends. Spend a good month figuring out what you want to produce and studying your competitors work. With GD for instance, correct color schemes and decal placement etc is besides neatness paramount to even receiving a commended enrty pin. Giving yourself the most time possible to achieve your vision will give you the best chance of placing in something like GD. Most of these pieces have work in them that are well in excess of 100 hours, with some of the artists I know putting something more on the order of 150 hours for an entry. Keep doing what you are doing and take it slow and have fun and you will get there! I think your work here is still an awesome display piece that you should be proud of! Happy painting!

if you want to compete because that is what motivates you to improve then do it, but remember when you are chasing improvements and awards, we all started this to have fun. So have fun along the way. we all lose site of that at one point or another. I think the best part of shows is meeting other painters and just being with like minded people who know the struggle and fun of painting :)
I feel that I’m way more of an expert at not winning a Golden Daemon than you- mainly because I’m not very good at painting, and I will never enter a painting competition, ever. Beat that! If you ever want some tips on how to not be rich, I can give great advice on that, too! 😉 (Love your videos- good for you that you entered a beautiful model, met some great people, and had a fantastic time. That’s what it’s all about, anyway 👍🏻)
