Some would say that was the intention of making this song for his son. Almost as if he knew he would pass away soon, and wouldn’t be able to see his son grow up. So he made this song to sort of replace the fatherhood he will never be able to give his baby boy. The irony is so prevalent it’s saddening & yet rejoice-full at the same time.

Jim Croce wrote this reflective song the night that he found out his wife, Ingrid, was pregnant. The couple had been married for five years, and Ingrid found out she was pregnant when she went to a fertility specialist. She recalls a mix of terror and delight in Jim's reaction when she told him the news. The child was a boy named Adrian, who grew up to become the singer-songwriter A.J. Croce.

Just a little thing, but the song was known & loved by Croce fans well before he died. It was on his hit album, You Don't Mess Around With Jim, released April 1972. Apparently the record company didn't think it was worth releasing as a single (till he died), which meant it didn't get "real" radio airplay till then. A few DJ's/stations played album cuts (& played it), but most didn't.

Just think during the 60's and 70's you had some of the greatest singer/songwriters in music history during those two decades. With artist like Jim Croce, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Paul Simon, John Lennon and Paul McCarthy of the Beatles. Neil Diamond, John Denver, Harry Chapin, Carol King, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Barry Manilow, Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, and so many more.
The singer/songwriters of those 2 decades were extraordinary in their music compositions and their lyrics. They were incredible. They have left to the masses an indelible mark that will last for years to come.

He passed away 1-1/2 years ago and these words are on his gravestone. No truer words were spoken in my life-they felt like he wrote them for us. What a beautiful song. To add a bit; On AJ's blindness, he was totally blind for 6 years. Thankfully, at age 10, he regained the sight in his left eye. Also, while it's thought of as a song "for AJ", per Jim's wife, Ingrid, he began writing it the night she told him she was pregnant (before he knew it'd be a boy). So, it includes his feelings about Ingrid, anticipation of having a child together, etc. She also said, the day of his funeral, when she got home, a letter had arrived from Jim, talking about the future & his plans to do better when he got home. It closes with "Give a kiss to my little man. Remember, it's the 1st 60 years that count & I've got 30 more to go." Heartbreaking.

My daughter grew up listening to Jim Croce because I played it in the house and car often enough. It wasn't until she was about 23 that I played a documentary on Jim Croce for her when she was home from college that she learned he died 20 years before she was born. FYI, Jim wrote Time in a Bottle with his unborn son in mind after his wife Ingrid told him she was pregnant, in December 1970.

The single was released Nov. 73. The song was on his April 1972 album, You Don't Mess Around With Jim. Apparently his record co. didn't think it worthy of releasing as a single (till he died), so it didn't get "real" radio airplay. It was only heard on the few stations that played album cuts.

I remember hearing this song as a kid and not really paying attention but, as the years go by, I really appreciate it more and more every time I hear it. It is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Now it usually brings tears to my eyes. Great heartfelt reaction!

I walked down the aisle (barefoot on the beach) to this song. Was a beautiful moment in time, hubby and I danced back up the aisle to Bob Marley's One Love. Was a beautiful day that I treasure in my memory. The marriage didn't last, but this song always takes me back to the love, and warmth on the beach, and brings a wistful tear to my eyes. I'm glad you were able to appreciate the profoundness of this song 💜

His son performs his Dad's songs in concert and continues to be haunted by his father's early passing. I can remember how shaken the music world was when Croce died. His album had dropped and he was one of the hottest new male artists that year. He received several posthumous awards for his music.

Jim Croce was one of my favorite singers. He died while I was in Marine Corps Boot Camp, and I didn't hear about his death until I got home. It was a very sad day. Operator is still one of my very favorite songs and I think one of the best songs ever made.

One of my favorite artists. Jim Croce is one of those entertainers that could sit on a stage in front of a huge crowd without a band, just a guitar and microphone, and hold you captivated for hours. His songs were stories. Little pieces of his life’s experiences laid out before you on a beautiful platter of melody.

I can remember where I was when I heard the new about his death, I was driving home from a hunting trip at about midnight the news came on the radio and I had to pull over and I cried, so many great singers died in Airplane or Car Accidents, Buddy Holly,Big Bopper, Party Cline, Edit Cochran and then later it was Stevie Ray Cough to many greats are goon by accidents
