    That's brilliant, thanks for sharing. I cut the top off a bowling ball a couple of years ago for a swivel base, with the intention of making an engraving clamp. Drew a blank when it came to making the clamp. This will work great.

    definately want to try this,i have priced ball vices myself and they are VERY expensive and this looks like a great alternative to going bankrupt just for a hobby ,i have no illusions that i am or ever will be a great engraver but ive seen enough videos online to know that i at least want to try it

      It's a nice little tool and if you engrave several of one item, you can easily make custom jaws for it. Also light if you travel. Thanks for watching!

      @@ShapingSilver i just picked up a graver set off amazon,im not so sure how good they are or if i can engrave any type of metal but for a starter kit i can start on wood or anything like that so this vice will be a great asset to at least get a start

    Had you considered a £5 'lazy Susan' bearings underneath, to spin the work?
    Very clear video, thanks.
    Questions: 1. Does it have to be round? Easier to make if square?
    2. The angle bracket - I can see an advantage in using it, wondered if the wood was oak or another hardwood, the pins would hold in the wood?

    • @ShapingSilver
      @ShapingSilver  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but I had the sandbags and they allowed you to angle the work like with an engraved ball. Thank you!

    • @ShapingSilver
      @ShapingSilver  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, most camps I have seen are square boards.
      You probably could do without the bracket, but it think the holes will deform or fray if you clamp hard... Try it and see if it works. :-)

    • @ShapingSilver
      @ShapingSilver  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavePawson the ones in "Engraving precious metals" are square, but the engraver's blocks from "Engraving metals" are round, as are engraving balls. I made mine round, so that it is easy to hold.

    You can build it into a bowling ball. Then you have a real engraver's ball. It is very handy. Nice work.

    • @ShapingSilver

    Well done. But can you put the device in something to make it stable? Or that is not a problem. I'm just a beginner and i don't have many tools to work with. I love your idea and think I will make one of my self. Thanks for sharing with us 😇

    • @ShapingSilver
      @ShapingSilver  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I guess you could screw it to something, but normally you would want it mobile when engraving. It is not very good for stone setting. I (also) build it for when I'm travelling, so for that the small leather bag is fine. Thanks for watching. :-)

    We spoke once before. I am close to the border. I am looking for Scandinavian silver (Ag 830), but it turns out that no one in Scandinavia sells it any longer, at least I do not find anyone. I also do not find its melting point. Do you happen to know? For now I make ingots myself, but it is tiresome. I need to know the melting point because I use it to make mokume gane. Best, Dordi.

    • @ShapingSilver
      @ShapingSilver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dordi, sorry I missed your reply. No, it is not sold from new anymore. I buy old cutlery from my "silver-pusher". Looking at the Ag-Cu phase diagram I would say about 780C. Try writing them at www.lundinantique.com/ or try dba.dk and see if anyone want to ship to you. Thanks for watching.

      Hi Shaping, Fischer (Pforzheim) makes it and someone else in Berlin. Can give info if you want. It is not a problem. I still don't know the melting point. I use 750 for the mokume gane. No problem. I am sure I can even go up to 760.

    As for Sam Alfonso, if you have the money you can do it, but manual gravers work fine - after some practice. I never liked these air driven gravers. They cut much better of course, but it costs a lot of money before you are set. If you are not a professional doing this day in day out, use basic gravers.

    • @ShapingSilver
      @ShapingSilver  3 ปีที่แล้ว
