Moved up here from London last year, and the locals would very much consider themselves Midlanders. The North, to my mind, would officially start in Sheffield, very southern tip of Yorkshire.
Technically we are Midlanders (geographically speaking) but we definitely have the Northern mentality and humour… and are more welcoming as a general rule than the southerners.
