Despite the many reviews of the 50-series cards showing that their value proposition is weak, the 50-series cards sold out in a matter of seconds on launch day. Do reviews still matter? Linus and Luke discuss.

@@Kieranh4424 No, because my card is like 8 years old at this point, to me, it will be a massive upgrade none the less, sure, it would be cool if it was even better, but at the end of the day, as long as I can play my games, it won't really matter to me how much better the card is, these cards are already smoking any game released, and any game where there is trouble running it, we perfectly know is the devs not optimizing the game, not the card being bad, in my opinion, if the cards were better, we would just see the game companies optimizing even less, because the games would run anyway.

nvidia did this on purpose. they’ve seen how much scalping helped their previous generation. so they produced like 1k card for the world and get scalpers artificially raising the price for them so their $800 over msrp looks reasonable

I don't think nvidia even put that much thought into it. 5090s are probably just down-binned AI chips that didn't make the cut. And every other Blackwell gaming GPU is low priority compared to the big profit AI chips. They're all coming out of TSMC and they're the main constraint to more supply.

    • @wangruochuan

@@cookiehead2 5090 is down-binned from the highend b6000 server chip. Nowadays Nvidia is flooding it with their data-center bundle hardwares. You want to use our AI technology? You have to buy our server chip. Thanks to Intel going absolutely obsolete, Nvidia and AMD is chumping the Intel's market share like crazy. Peasant GPU is not their major income source anymore. Also, since everybody is making orders at TSMC, the price goes up naturally.

      @SuperCookieGaming_ 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@ pervious generations had a lot of demand and thus the price went up. now nvidia wants to replicate that. but the 50 series doesnt really improve enough to justify that so they go to the other side of the supple demand curve. they limit supply so even if demand is lower the price can still be high.

I have an M2 Max MacBook Pro and a PC I built a while back with a 1070 in it. I primarily play Civ VI and GW2, and both could probably run both on a toaster, so I haven't felt the need to upgrade my 1070. Having said that, I will be buying a 5090 (maybe even two).
Simply put, running LLMs locally is incredible, which I have been able to experiment with on my MacBook Pro. After the mobile revolution was started with the iPhone, nothing has been more exciting to me in the last 20 years than the possibilities with AI. The MacBook Pro is great for inference, but it's still sort of slow, and I can't really train on it. To double, or triple my inference speed and be able to fine tune LLMs quickly is something I really want to explore, and are great skills to learn. As a bonus I can finally play AAA titles at max settings again, and I get really great video encoders with AV1.
So yeah, the demand for these are going to be breathtaking. It's never going to slow down. I get the gamer perspective about the 5090 being only sort of an okay bump. They're wrong though, because for local LLM inference, it's all about memory bandwidth, and VRAM quantity. Going to 512-bit GDDR7 makes the 5090 about 50% faster on larger LLMs (32B 4-bit) than the 4090, and 32GB is just enough - although I wish it was 48GB. Come on Nvidia, please give us a 48GB "Titan AI" for $3k USD.
Anyway, we got the bump for LLMs this generation with the 5090. We're not going to see a wider memory bus next generation, and probably not more VRAM either on the 6090 - 48GB will be reserved for a Titan card, if they do it. The fact that they went with a 512-bit bus with GDDR7 VRAM tells you that the 5090 isn't just a gamer card, as that wasn't necessary for gaming. It's a dual purpose workstation and gaming card. Sign me up for one, maybe even two - if I can find one.

Second, and something I haven't seen anyone else mentioning, this year they're releasing 27" 4K 240Hz OLED monitors. To me, this is the perfect size and PPI to actually no longer need anti-aliasing in games. The 32" versions are just too big for how I enjoy gaming. But to go from 1440p of my current display to 4K, I want the most performance I can throw at it so I get what I consider to be the minimum playable FPS of 100 FPS, but 120+ FPS is ideal for me. To get that FPS at 4K consistently wasn't easily possible prior to this generation. So, building a 5090 + 9800X3D PC just makes sense when you consider what I'm trying to accomplish.

I'm on a 3080 which I picked up near launch. I play on a QHD monitor. When I got the 3080, I was playing games at 120fps average. Now new games it's around 80. I skipped the 4080, so it's been over 4 years.
The 5080 is 2x the average frame rate of the 3080. Just because the generational improvement isn't much doesn't mean it's not a big upgrade for me. By not buying the 4080, my hobby fund has plenty of money in it to afford the 5080. So why shouldn't I buy one when they are available?
If we were still at the old $650 pricing for the 80 class cards and I bought the 4080, then the 5080, I would have spent $1300. So what's the problem with skipping the 4080 and buying the 5080 for that price?

When they talked about their viewer retention, did they ever cosniser that 2/3rd of the viewers dont care about frame gen and rt performance??? If you cover the 1080p, 1440p, and 4k raster performace and the price to performance when compared to the older cards and competion, thats all people care about most of the time. Maybe people dont care or consider RT or Fram Gen to be interesting for most of their use cases.

Your influence is understated by just looking at the viewer numbers.
The small number of nerds watching influence more people and it does put pressure on companies not to scam customers.
Without reviews you could get a new generation half as powerful as the last one but 4x fake frames for the same price.
People would pay attention if something extreme like that would happen.

    Welcome to this world.
Some time ago we thought people were dumb beceause they weren't educated/informed, because education/information was hard to come by.
We are just about realizing that being dumb is an incurable illness and that humanity, as a whole, is about as doomed as can be. Individuals can still do fine, but overall what little sparks are left are being diluted in thick tar.
Good frogging luck to all slipping out of that.

I think a big thing to consider with review videos, is that once people have gleamed enough information, they are willing to jump off. I know several people that were hoping for a good raster uplift, and know that they stopped looking at reviews when it wasn't the case. The cards are just disappointing and once people get to that conclusion, they no longer need to watch.

I think you guys do a great job with your reviews. Been following your brand for a long time, but a lot has changed for me over the years and I don't have time like I used to. I would recommend structuring your reviews with the beginning being rapid fire key points with what your average low on time consumer might want to know (rasteraztion performance at common res etc). Then, have a "if you stuck around this long, heres the full breakdown" for the remainder of the video. If that isn't feasible, consider releasing two types of videos. One that's a fast concise review, 10 minutes or less and the other a more in-depth video for those of us who may have time to fully watch and or really want to know the full specs and breakdown.
I've never heard the term micro influencer LOL that's funny. I am that guy for my family and friends. I never knew I was on the path to fame 😂. You guys keep up the great work

The supply of the 5090s was held back in so far as there was insufficient stock released for a heavily marketed launch. The 4090s were allowed to run out before launch. Now, there's an artificial impression that a 5090 is a card *to buy* despite the lacklustre game performance reviews. This isn't the blind hand of the market; it's a monopoly.

    3. I am one person that listened to reviews. I was thinking of shilling out my savings for a 5080 and thankfully I didn't because it's a horrible financial decision 😂. But your review solidified it in my mind. So you are having an impact

The big viewership drop after the rasterization graphs just shows very few people care for the fake frames and "fake performance" as the real raw performance is the true deciding factor for many. Especially at such a high premium price you'd not want the crutch of DLSS or FSR to have playable high resolution frame rates.
