I was watching that documentary last night and one of the highlight is really when that guy touched the hammond and unlock the secret groove behind Rainy Day, Dream Away like he's playing in your living room.
Jimi once said, that he saw Music in colors--but not people. He was a visionary person in that regard....He was very real, not perfect, but as Buddhists say, "Perfect in his Imperfections". I saw many of the fine artists of that time period,,,none were even close to Jimi's mastery of his Strat.
What I read about somewhere, was that this cut came about by pure serendipity. Finnigan just happened to be in the studio next door, on another session, and Hendrix just kind of wandered in from his session, and it was like "Hey man, let's try this out!" Like he told the interviewer here, "There was no bass player" Finnigan was doing the time honored tradition of Hammond B3 Jazz Organ players, playing the bass on the organ keys! (A La Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, etc, etc)
Just saw Joe Cocker last night at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater FL. He was awesome and Mike was in the band. What a treat, don't miss this tour. These guys are a class act, very powerful, energetic and soulful and Joe is in prime form. Highlite for me was Help From My Friends where Mike kicked it off with some fat B3 soloing.
I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Michael before a CSN show in Portland, ME a couple of years ago. Couldn't have been nicer and more down to earth. A legend but also classy.
Finnigan is so great on vocals and B3. JHB album "Times caught up with you" , "Early Bird Cafe" hell its all great. Then check out the LP "Crazed Hipsters" with Jerry Wood then check out LP "Harmony and Melody" with Mason and Krueger and he just keeps getting better.....
Bobby Stout was on the Jerry Hahn Brotherhood Album. It's out of print, but copies show up on ebay now and again. I got aperfectly great vinyl last Xmas. One of the best of all time
The joy of music. I never get tired of this track. It's like a conversation between Hammond, drums and guitar. I love the call response, the pent up first section, then the explosion on Jimi's guitar. Metaphorical foreplay then bang-orgasm. What else you gonna do on a rainy day?🙏
Jimi was from Seattle-like me...and I can so connect with Jimi's take on rain! We get roughly 40" of rain a year...I can just see the young Jimi, leaning out on a window sill, checking out the soft patterns of raindrops hitting his neighborhood. I did that, as a kid, and I still do! There is a certain feel and ambiance to Seattle's weather, and I can pick up on that vibe, in listening to Jimi's soulful, thoughtful riffing. Poor Jimi had such a disjointed, neglectful and harsh upbringing in Seattle; and it left him bittersweet about the city he grew up in. Yet, he poured so much of that hurt, but also the good times, into his playing. His unique stylings still leave me spellbound, after all these years. I feel lucky to have been of his generation!
@@curbozerboomer1773 ....no use in getting uptight, just let it groove its own way... Ladyland...still the best ever album in the history of popular music.
Yes, how could you not!! A short-lived band that definitely left their mark in musical history. I played football, and when our band (or the other teams band) would play "Get IT On", it was hard for me to concentrate on what I was doing because I wanted to see how well they could interperate all of the horn licks, especially the cascading break.
I will look around. I don't have it but I still know a lot of people who have been involved in the music biz in Wichita for years, which is where this track was recorded. I will check back.
Great to hear the back story on this, and Buddy and Mike take exactly the right attitude. Proud to be on the track. Hopefully Buddy got paid, even if Mike didn't. Rainy Day, especially when spliced together, is one of the best Hendrix tracks. It's got structure and controlled dynamics, but it also has a looseness you only hear when true musicians got to be musicians. Noel was never at that level, while Mitch would have been way too intense for this song.
How cool it would have been to just hang out with these guys! My old guitarist did some work with Mike + Gerald Johnson + Floyd Sneed + Joe Schermie of 3Dog Night. I got to see Mike twice with Dave Mason + he's every bit as good a singer as he is on the keys. I think he's with Bonnie Raitt now. You were with TOP? What did/do you play? The bass-line to What Is Hip is one of the things that inspired me to switch from guitar to bass many yrs ago. I still play both, and several others as well. B)
The Gerald Johnson? Steve Miller Band GJ? That's amazing. I love that guy. Supposedly, he played a right handed bass upside down left handed, without restringing it. Crazy, but he sure sounded good.
Mike Finnigan has been around the block, several times. He reminds me of Jerry Scheff, who managed, at one point, to be Elvis' bass player AND the Doors bass player, simultaneously.

I don't share the world's love of Hendrix, but I think Finnigan is a musical GIANT. His work with Jerry Wood on "Crazed Hipsters" is one of the best blues/rock albums ever recorded. His voice on "Black & White" is unbelievabe. He recorded and toured with Crosby Stills & Nash, handled vocals when Crosby was too fucked up to carry his weight. Mike is one of the unknown major dudes in rock/blues history.
Jimi had some absolute monster musicians on this album, and he knew exactly who he wanted on each track. While Mitch was one hell of a drummer, he wouldn't have had the right feel on this one - much like Buddy would have been all wrong for 1983...A Merman I Should Turn To Be.
