The first defense was at Thermopylae after the betrayal of Ephialtes, the Spartans lost. There was also supposed to be a naval battle near Chalkida but it didn't happen and so the Greek ships proceeded to the straits of Salamis because there was also the first victorious naval battle. As soon as the Persians arrived in Athens they found it empty and so they proceeded towards Peloponnese where there they met the last defense of the Greeks where the Spartans fought them again and the Greeks won. At the sea , the Greeks had made a plan. Since the fleet of the Persians was huge, their entire fleet could not go into the strait, and the more Persian ships entered the strait, the easier it was for, that's why the Greeks won again. A Spartan admiral destroyed the few Persian ships left from the previous naval battle near the eastern islands of Greece. So the Persian king was gone and for the Greeks this was the greatest ancient victory. (I'm Greek that's why I'm telling you)
Also the Athenians fought when the Persians landed at Marathon and that the fleet belonged to both Sparta and Athens. That is, all of Greece united to fight Persia.
