It's been so long since I've seen those movies that I don't remember the main people and the explosions especially the explosions (last time I watched was a month ago rise of the beasts)
The police officer and his girlfriend, part of the film made me think that they just watched the CW "The Flash" TV series, and thought... "What if they had a pet... Ohh I got it, Sonic."
Mushroom Hill Zone is the first stage in the game Sonic & Knuckles on the Sega Genesis. I think Mushroom Planet comes from this. It's located in the Angel Island (which also the name of the first stage of Sonic 3)
