  • What's new in ACR 16.0 and Lightroom? An EPIC Color Theory tool that I never knew I needed, and now that I have it, I am STOKED!
This color range feature for modifying color is next-level color theory at play and it's at the RAW level. WOW! The only thing I could ask for is for them to port this into an Adjustment Layer into Photoshop. That would make my life complete :)

I knew it! I was watching another video yesterday where the individual was not all that excited about "Color Point." The first thing I thought was "I BET Blake will love it." lol. Thank you for this wonderful quick "review." I look forward to the future in-depth videos to come.

Yeah, Blake, it's probably more than we are seeing at present. This is going for a 32bit workflow system that gives the ability to infinitely distort the hyperbolic 3D color space we see diagramed all the time in color space comparisons but have never had an intuitive WYSIWYG way to manipulate it in such a simple but forceful way. And I love their categories of 'Light, Color, Effects' as a not so obvious way to admit that the Rudis Mantra of Tone-Color-Effects is a truly all encompassing way to understand how to bring the digital negative to life; some of us know what they mean by Light is in better described as Tone. Kudos to having such a profound impact on the most significant image editing platform ever created to date.

Thanks for the information on Point Color. You have gone into much more detail than most of the instructors currently reviewing the new software update. Love your shot of the Dallas Divide from the overlook pull-off. My wife and I happened to be in Ouray last week also, although didn't go to Dallas Divide. Bravo, Blake. Most are focusing on Lens Blur and HDR, and I agree that while those are cool, before I even saw this video I thought Point Color is the one that will help us the most day to day. ACR/LR review coverage should be 80% Point Color and 20% the rest, but most have that backwards. You got it right. As usual. :)

The best part is having that level of control for color in masking now. It would appear that Adobe does listen as it has been much requested since the masking section became available. I love your enthusiasm. I have only recently returned to Adobe products and have been a long time C1 user, yes I know, I'm one of those. C1 has alienated me and many others with their revised pricing model recently so I am very glad to see this implementation of this colour manipulation feature. It was an aspect of C1 that I used on most images so great to see it here.
I appreciate that your channel is all about Adobe, however, I think it is important to realise that other software manufacturers, especially those with different tools, help drive innovation. Without C1, PL7 etc etc Adobe I doubt would have made the recent strides they have. The other big one for me was being able to mask curves in ACR.

Love this feature and your enthusiasm in the video! Point color is an intriguing new feature. What's exciting for color-vision-defiicent people like me, is that I don't have to decide "is it yellow or is it orange," similar to the targeted adjustment tool, and (for everybody) can adjust hue, saturation, and luminance for a targeted color all in one place (instead of separate H, S ,and L panels). I might have missed you mentioning this, but you can have multiple "point color" selections and adjustments.

It's nice to see Adobe adding more professional features again instead of dumbing down and making it easier for the amateur. That probably sounds terrible but we must stay ahead of the curve and if Adobe and other firms make one-click software that gives anyone the ability to get professional results without having any knowledge of how things actually work, our profession is doomed.

I like your enthusiastic approach to the new functions. IMHO this will give me the opportunity to make my most recent subjects (well camouflaged preying mantis) stand out a little - just like I saw and found them because in the photos they blend even more into the environment than they do in reality (where certain lighting directions that allow finding them do not translate well into the photos because then these lack definition). The same urgency (I need to revisit images) like you articulated has befallen me regarding some rare orchids (yellow bee orchids, a genetic aberration which is without the brown lip color the normal form has) which are so darn hard to depict because they again blend so well into the environment where they grow that it's almost impossible to do them justice..

No tutorial to follow really. Anytime I show something in ACR or usually means what I do before going into PS. That's not the same for everyone, but with my workflow that's what you can expect.

Back in the day, the Nikon editing software, Capture NX had a better version of this with their U point technology. You could click a point in the image and then change anything, colour, contrast, luminance, based on the pixels under the cursor. And you could choose an area, circle/elipse. It's why for years I didn't bother with photoshop, Capture NX or whatever it was called, made it very easy to do a lot with photos. You could change any hue to any hue too.
I've waited years for this, particularly to have it in the making area as well.

Been using since appears on ACR and Lr but I find a funny thing, well strange in a way. Usually, Adobe uses the same features between ARC and Lr, on Point Color on Lr when you over the eyedropper you get a magnifier here you can see the detail and color you going to choose. On ACR that doesn't exist, we just click and that's all.
Ok, no doubt we can say that in Lens Blur the icon to activate visualize depth is also different, but that's only the Icon, here I found the Lr more precise way to select the color, well, better. Don't know why on ACR is different.

After that adjust the range based on the three parameters to narrow down the portion of the skin that's problematic. You kind of have to evaluate the image and determine how to mask it. Also, don't forget to feather the selection for a natural transition. To really isolate the problematic areas, I'd even temporarily boost the vibrance to 100 and saturation to 30 or 40. I have to say that over the past 2-3 years ADobe has made LR and ACR quite competitive with their color manipulation (and masking) tools. I mean 2-3 years ago, LR and ACR were a bit of a joke in this regard and many others, but lately, I think it's really starting to show its value, and the value of the Photographers package (which Adobe HASN'T asked for more money yet, yet we are getting a lot of new features in both ACR/LR AND Photoshop -- although they are starting to implement the pay-for-AI model, but you can still use it without buying extra credits -- it's just slower but luckily things like generative fill are tools I really don't use anyway with my photography editing workflow).
Even though most of the modern hardware out there isn't necessarily HDR-compatible (screens, tablets, phones, printers, etc) it is nice that they at least included this for now, for when the technology becomes more readily available and in use (although that may still be a few years away before it becomes mainstream, but at least we'll have the option when it does). Personally I'm not that interested in this feature currently (As I mostly do landscapes, and like to keep things mostly realistic) and if I do need HDR, I will continue to use traditional techniques to achieve the results I need/want.

I’ve dreamed about this for 15 years, color adjustments not just based on a hue range but also saturation and luminance range.
Now I will probably have to dream many more years for it the be available as an adjustment layer in Ps. The color tools in photoshop, which I always thought was kind of their flagship product, is falling behind ACR/Lr, premiere and after effects. For example how many times does one have to flip between shadows, midtones and highlights in color balance every day? It’s ridiculous.

Blake, as a newer f64 Elite Academy member which has been awesome by the way, I can see where this would change my workflow! To keep it non destructive, we would need to pull into ACR as a smart object right as any direct editing in ACR would be destructive. This pretty much eliminates the need for HSL/Saturation adjustments in PS? Looks like the range sliders incorporate feathering or blend if!?

    • @f64Academy

They don't necessarily incorporate blend if, they just operate similarly. I don't tend to open as a smart object, but that's my workflow. It doesn't hurt to open as a smart object. But since it's raw it's always nondestructive. If you use this in ACR as a filter on a stamped layer, I would probably use it as a smart object.

I would add it would really vary with the kind of thing you're doing as an image editor: a one off fine art piece vs a commercial shoot putting a batch of images through a consistent flow with a given color objective in mind, at a couple examples where you might use this as an initial step in ACR or LR to bring a specific image into a particular 'look', ready for sharing or printing, where a non-destructive 'layer' is less needed, or whether it's done more as a masked treatment for particular aspects of an image or batch of images ready for final tweaks for fine art proof prints or commercial production where one may need to go back and make a change and apply that change to every image in a set.
