Yes! The message of this show isn't just be free to be yourself and validate your feelings....it's be honest and talk about them....simply, honestly....and if you go back to episode four, after the kiss that Nick gives to Charlie....Charlie doesn't speak another word in that scene....as Nick is spewing out his doubts and fears....Charlie just joins him on the bed, hugs him as he cries, they separate and Charlie gives him a little smile....verifying that Nick is validated in his feelings and fears...and just hugs him again as Nick sobs in fear and confusion. This show is a model, not only in communication with words, but also in listening and just being there when the other person needs to express themselves and just need a safe space (person) to do that. Brilliant!!!!
I'm so glad that they gave us the bisexual rep we all needed in Nick Nelson. It's such a confusing and scary time, and I feel like it's overlooked in media and film. It's so nice to watch a series and see myself in it, I wish I had this when I was young and figuring myself out, it would've helped me so much to realise that it's valid, and that other people feel it too. And we love Charlie being an understanding and supportive bf.
Especially in media that becomes so mainstream. I don't think I have personally seen a character I relate to as closely as I relate to Nick. Even if I did not get it when I was younger it's still unbelievable to see bisexual men represented so well.
Charlie was so excited when Nick told him that he had told Tara and Darcy they where a couple. I think Charlie full expected to be kept a secret permanently (like Ben) but he was accepting it because nick treated him way better. I'm so proud of nick for telling someone and becoming more open to the people he's close to, and so happy that Charlie has found someone that is treating him right.
Nick’s journey of self-discovery is so beautiful, and so perfectly acted by Kit Connor. “Heartstopper” is different from most shows in showing a decent, well-meaning, caring person who learns more about himself because of the love he has for someone else. His heart is pure, which makes it so easy to root for him, and on top of that, the more he learns about himself, the more he can be there for Charlie. I’m loving all of your reactions and comments, and I’m definitely looking forward to your reactions for the remaining two episodes of the season.
What you said about there being a healthy way to address problems and it being resolved right there is so important. We always resort to 'oh, we shouldn't be like this character' and 'this is a lesson on what not to do in a relationship' when it comes to media but it's so relieving to see a show catered to the youth about how to be a good communicator in a relationship and how to listen. So that we finally have a blueprint on what we can and should do when problems arise.
I agree wholeheartedly. I am a middle school teacher, and I was just thinking the same. Our students need to see good communication play out in their media, instead of the drama, fighting and backstabbing that they naturally fall into.
Yes! We're so used to teen-drama and waiting for the other shoe to drop and have it blow up that this show gently placing the shoe down is honestly so refreshing and unexpected!
I really think it was knowing that he didn't have to choose that helped Nick feel comfortable in telling people, I feel like before this episode he felt pressured to be either gay or straight and once he accepted the fact he can be bi and that's 100% valid almost all the stress went away
The biggest damage to Charlie was feeling that he was no more than a dirty little secret of someone trying to protect themselves and not him. When Nick shares that secret, it means so much to Charlie that this is something REAL....and that Nick is true in his feelings.... Charlie's damage will be addressed more in the next season, per the books, but this step was scary for Nick...but life saving for Charlie.
Re Elle being trans - Tao buys Elle's apple juice in ep1, and says it's better that she's at the girl's school. Do you know Mr. Reed was still refusing to call her Elle? Charlie: Yeah, Mr. Reed is a massive transphobe.
As a bi I'm glad finally there is a bisexual main character in a queer show. Growing up there were always some girls that I liked but was always more physically attract to guys, wasn't always sure of it until the day she show up unexpectedly and I found my heartbeat raising and don't know how to react so I ran away, years later the same thing happened to another guy, that's the moment I'm sure that I am a bi and proud of being one.
Me too I had the same thing as nick. I had always liked boys....and then I met this girl and omg🙏🏻❤️ we became gf but...we never kissed. We held hands a lot...we both really liked each other but my Katherine was really controlling and her mother was Homophobic so we only hung out at school so....like..yeah we dodnt really get to kiss or anything...😕 I recently just reconnected with her. She has a girlfriend so I'm like making sure I keep myself in check but yeah we've kinda become friends again. We haven't hung out in person but we te t and play minecraft. I feel Luke it's so much harder to let myself like girls because of society.....I wish I knew if the girls I like were bi or gay cuz im too afraid to make that move and make someone uncomfortable 😭
@@finnyc.260Sorry just seen your comment. Some said Bi-Sexual is better as you can choose the gender of your love one with public acceptance... The truth is you can't control who and what gender you fall in love to, just like hetero sexual it is not like you just fall in love with any guy you choose if you are a girl, it doesn't work that way.
Elle is trans. She had to transfer from the boys' school to the girls' school when she transitioned The actress who plays her is also trans. She's apparently big on tiktok talking about being a black trans girl.
There is a great outtake from this scene at 24:04 where they burst into the room and Joe forgot to take his face mask off for the scene. He was literally the only one of the cast wearing a face mask.
I like your comments re Darcy and Tara at the end of the episode. I never noticed before regarding the point you made that even though Tara was having problems, she did not blame Darcy. This show demonstrates that positive and honest communication quickly solves many issues before they blow up. I feel it's one of the biggest lessons for people who are watching, particularly the younger viewers.
I have watched your channel off and on over the years, but this has made me realize just how awesome you are. I love hearing your insight and opinions on this show, which has made me appreciate it so much more. Thank you for reacting to this. :)
Been loving your reactions to Heartstopper! 💗 In case you aren’t familiar with him, the youtuber Nick watches is a IRL youtuber Courtney-Jai, who has talked about his bisexuality but also reacts to a lot of queer shows like Young Royals, Skam etc. much like you!
You are spot on! This is such a great representation of teens coming to the realization of their sexual orientation. God I wish I had this when I was struggling in my teens. I was so alone.

I think it's implied from Episode 1 that Elle transitioned. She was previously at an all Boys School and now attends an all Girls School.

It was not just in one day, practice and concert were in a different week, I think.
