There are a couple reasons why some enclosures look more bare/basic than the natural habitat from the wild. This is under the assumption the animal has the approved required enclosure space.
1) Enclosure Age: this pertains to enclosures that were built back in the 80s or earlier. If it was built in a way that wouldn’t allow for enclosure decorations this would be why. It would be too long to post how keepers do their best to work around these restrictions or why zoos don’t redesign those outdated enclosures (most do but it comes down to money).
2) Zookeeper Accessibility: zookeepers need to be able to get in to the enclosure to feed, clean, place enrichment, get out in a hurry, or whatever else. It’s very difficult to do so if the enclosure is wall to wall thick vegetation. And animals just don’t like that. They like having open spaces too.
3) Location: if you’re building a zoo in a desert environment, it’s going to be impossible to recreate a rainforest enclosure or aviary without the proper soil, climate, and overall requirements of those native plants. The best we can do is use plants that can thrive or adjust to that desert environment, like in Arizona or Australia.
4) Animals Are The Designers: this one few people recognize. When new exhibits are built, the enclosures are typically lush with the adequate plant life but it’s the animals that then redesign the enclosure, typically uprooting grass and pulling plants out of the ground. Any pig species will turn a grassy lawn into a dirt enclosure in a matter of weeks. Apes and primates will turn a dense jungle into a sparse forest in no time at all. Same with elephants. Same with cats.
5) No Need: lastly there are animals that just don’t need lush vegetation. Take your video for example. Crocodilian species need two things: water and sunlight. Water to swim, hide, and cool off and sunlight to bask and digest properly. These animals don’t necessarily need lots of trees and shrubs. Of course, we still provide it for them but lots of zoos have little vegetation in crocodilian enclosures and those animals thrive!
So just a little insight into the reason why some zoo exhibits lack the idea of what natural habitats should be mirrored into. And trust me, if the guests notice it, we the zookeepers have already noticed months before you and have already started to plan how we can correct these issues.

Feeling ya seems so easy in the video and just been busy 1,5h with only a thatch umbrella the size of a dome :p

feel the same bro, its really amazing how some people build that...i do my best and try to make i kinda natural but im still in the original zoo tycoon modes XD
Maybe an inside and outside section for habitats in a dome would make the size feel right. It would also give the animals room to hide when they get overwhelmed.
The Komodo Dragons have space behind the waterfall to hide away :) the Saltwater Crocodile has one-sided glass, so they would not see the guests in the zoo at all :)

I look forward to getting this game (along with Anno 1800) as soon as I can afford to build a pc. Am currently an old (72yo) gamer and played Zoo Tycoon (cd version with the ocean and dinosaur add on cd’s) for many years. I was very disappointed with ZT2, but Planet Zoo looks like a game I could get into. So until I can afford a pc I’ll be a very loyal watcher.

the bite force of that dome is incredible haha ! crocs and the dragons. You can easily import sounds from a rollercoaster in here now "Keep your hands and arms inside the train at allllll times" ....because else they chew them right of :D :D

You need to make the walls on the inside of the Salty enclosure (the cylinder part) taller, salties can jump about 75% of their body length out of the water

A zookeeper in the comments gave a really good explanation as to why real zoos look the way the do, but for the game I aim to make my habitats as natural as possible. In a perfect world I'd want all the animals to live in their natural habitats and the game lets you do that! Plus its really fun to design with the plants and everything!
Modern zoos like the San Diego Zoo and Dallas Zoo have done a very good job not adding too much of an industrial feeling.

I'm doing a mixture where the beginning of my zoo being a renovated older zoo, older architecture and older looking exhibits but as you go deeper into the zoo it gets more naturalistic looking.

Not playing, but I definitely like the creative approach to the habitats more than the realistic one. It's just more interesting to see
my favorite animal is the komodo dragon ingame & IRL cuz it reminds me of me. its just an powerfull and imtimedating beast but still vulnerable and restrained and that do i find encouraging

In my zoo, the peacocks welfare was always really low due to them breeding constantly. They. never. stopped. I had at least 100 peacocks I had to release, and when I did I realized there were still around 200 babies that I couldn't release yet.
Annoying right? I have the same in City Zoo now 😆

My preference on enclosures is to make them as true to animal habitat as possible... then add in paths etc for visitors. That way nicer for animals, better education for visitors.
I always go for the natural vibe.

I go for natural habitats, but it's difficult because you get low welfare with too many trees/plants. Hope they change that to allow for more greenery in exhibits.

To answer your question Im playing scenario mode before anything else but the scenarios get rough as you progress star levels. Getting bronze in each seems easy enough but gold on all is pretty difficult.
As for favorite animal, definitely the wolves, I just love them so much

My most favorite animal is the aardvark! But I've never seen its baby :( but the pygmy hippo baby is SOO CUTEEEEEEEE!! And for things I don't like......there is some animals they don't have that r also not in the packs : ') but yeah! I'm obsessed with the game and am about to play!

Hey! Got the game this weekend and started playing the scenarios to get into the habit of managing my zoo. I’ve been inspired by the park layouts in there and they gameplay is really nice! I wouldn’t have learned about all the managing, caretake and guest education if I haven’t played scenarios. I’m working my way slowly through those before starting my own zoo. Love your videos, they inspire me so much! Keep it up!
A good example for a naturalistic approach in zoos is the Goldwana-Land in the Zoo in Leipzig. Maybe have a look at it for inspiration
The zoo on my Town (Granby's zoo in Québec Canada) have realy realistic habitat for animal ! Its one of the most beautiful zoo I've ever Seen !

I love seeing you play the game - no matter if it is franchise or sandbox mode :) I've only been playing the scenario so far, because I want to learn to know all of the animals and building stuff step by step. I think I would be overwhelmed in sandbox mode :D my favorite animal so far it's the American bison, because it is so fluffy 🥰 I'm going for a more natural habitat and I aim for building zoos with animals that fit the biom I'm building in :)
