It would be great if you could show us how you teach the letters of the alphabet to first graders! I am teaching first graders this year and your ideas are so inspiring!!Thank you for your videos!
This year will be the first year teaching English in primary school in Algeria and I am sure your videos will be very helpful for me and other teachers. Thanks teacher Val please keep up.
In a demo lesson, students gain a sense of accomplishment, but in a regular class, the team with the most stars at the end of the term earns 5 extra points on their final exam score.
Thank you! In Grade 1, I only teach 4-6 new words, so they usually memorize them very quickly. Also, I put these words in sentences and dialogues which makes the memorization process even smoother. I use the task-based approach which focuses on tasks filled with repetition. That helps too. :))
Hello sir, I am a student majoring in preschool education in China. After watching your video, I was deeply impressed and I can see you apply a considerable number of teaching methods in your class, such as the total physical response and I would like to teach English in the kindergarten. However, I am just a beginner. Can you give me some advice boys to help me start quicker
What an amazing lesson :) I couldn't stop smiling. But however, these children can understand you. Do you deal with students who didn't hear English speech before?
It's a classroom management tool. Students get points for being active and positive behavior. They lose points for misbehavior. The team with the most points at the end of the class is a winner and gets a star.
Hello Sir , I love your method very much ! It gives me energy and makes me excited about teaching . Hope you have more videos like this . I don’t know if you teach high school students or not because it is really necessary for me now . I will take an exam next month
@@Teacher-Val I graduated from university already and next month I will take an exam to get a job in high school so I need a video about teaching students in high school
In my regular classes, I give points for every correctly answered question, good efforts and positive behavior. At the end of the class, the winning team gets a star. At the end of the term, the team with the most stars gets 5 extra points to their final exam score. :)
@@Teacher-Val , kids pic up point just for exam? They are too small to understand that, aren't they? In my class no exams... I like your points system, bet I have no idea, how to motyvate kids.
Hi. Why don't they write during the lesson ? How do you teach them to understand the language...how often do you translate into Chinese ? You teach them What do you have ... How do they study the things that you don't translate. That is great that students from early age have the opportunity to learn the language from the English speaking person... Our students don't have such opportunity at school. It is a pity that in our country English is not so widespread and even our teachers don't have the opportunity to practise the language with the English native speakers... That is horrible because without practice it is impossible to improve speaking skills.
Hey Natalja! This lesson was a demo / open class meaning that I saw them for the first time in my life. No writing is taught during an open class. I don't use Chinese much in my classes, only if it helps to speed up the understanding. Multiple researches show that it is okay to use L1 in a language classroom because it helps to facilitate the process of comprehension and reduces insecurities that your students may have from their limited language proficiency. However, it is important not to get too carried away. English-mainly is better that English-only but overuse of L1 develops a dependency on it which is ineffective in language teaching. PS When I was a child, I didn't have an opportunity to learn English from the native speakers, either. I learned it at school and then at the university.
@@Teacher-Val Thanks for your answer. I watched some of your videos and I like them, they are useful for teachers. In my country An open lesson means that anyone from your school have the opportunity to visit your lesson where you show what your children already know, and it usually happens not very often, in other cases even your colleagues if they want to see how you teach must ask you for that and you have the right to say No. I am interested in your methods to see the difference in approaches. English is not so widespread in my country, we usually don't use it in our everyday life that is not good for developing speaking skills even for teachers... Most of the foreign people stay in big cities like Lviv Kyiv...there more chances to hear English. I live in the small town that is why we haven't got the opportunity to practise speaking very often. I teach primary school kids (6-9 year old) in Ukraine so it is interesting to see what it is demanded from the kids from other countries. What they must know after the 1,2,3,4 grades. What books do you use. The government in our country recommended the book called Quick minds part 1,2,3,4 for our kids also we can change the free of charge book, government gives the list of optional books that we can use ....but in this case ...parents buy them...teachers from our school use Academy stars 1 for the 2nd grade. Actually I don't like Quick minds much, the author doesn't understand that we are working with kids that don't sometimes know even Hello and Goodbye and he asks us to discuss the importance of standing in a queue and waiting for our turn in the canteen ), he starts not from phonics but by learning words by sight and writing them even at that period of time when children haven't learned the whole alphabet. And now days almost all books have such approach except the old that started from alphabet, learning letter sounds first reading simple words like ox dog and so on....And by the way what country are you from ? How many lessons per week do you teach in one class ?
@@НаталіяЯремко-в9е Hello Natalja! I am from Lithuania. I teach grade 4 and I have 14 classes/week. In addition to my classes, I design and develop lesson plan guidelines and curricula, run monthly professional development workshops, design orientations, train new teachers, observe classes to evaluate teacher classroom performance, etc. :) Governments rarely have educators on board, that's why the textbooks they choose and approve are disconnected from reality. I feel and understand your frustration. In China, primary school children use Yilin Oxford English textbooks published in China. Due to the recent double reduction policy, foreign books are no longer allowed in primary/middle schools. The government seeks to reduce the academic burden on the students and eliminate off-campus tutoring.

Thank you! The best way to learn is to practice. Watch other teachers teach, and then you try it. Start with your friend's child. Good for practice! 😉
Hello, teacher Val. I watched your vidios and liked them. Do you give home task for the next lesson ?
This lesson was an open day class. I had never seen these students before.
The only homework my students have is to memorize new words and sentences.
