Thank you so much for your video. You gave all the tips needed in order to keep it formal. I always get tricked when making the cuts outward or inwards in order to keep it weeping. TY!

Very informative. I've landscaped for 20+ years, and people insist on the "umbrella" style. Some of the most beautiful weeping cherries are huge, sprouting and resemble a fireworks display. It's partially the landscape designers fault for planting these trees in an area only suitable for a 4-6' plant.

10,000 Rambos I have a small, young weeping cherry I planted last year and I DON'T want the formal umbrella. I want a big, 25 ft gnarled beautiful weeping tree. It's starting to send shoots lopsided though... What's the best way to prune while encouraging it to be gnarled and fireworks style? Also... Will I need to wait until fall now?

Our weeping cherry is only 4 years old and it's 6' tall and 25' wide. We should have pruned much much sooner. Now I don't know what to do. Due to its location it needs to get taller. Any advice would be so appreciated!

HI Don! Thanks so much, your video was helpful. You were clear and slow to
demonstrate the cuttings. I'm new to this, my WC tree, is a baby, only about 7 ft. tall, and
small trunk for now, :). A good video for me especially, beginner!

Thanks for the video. It was really helpful. I have an older (about 10 years old, according to my neighbors) weeping cherry at my newly purchased home and I could not find a good tutorial on how to prune it. It has crossing branches and branches that shoot straight up.

I live in Colorado and we planted our tree last spring here. This spring the top branches never grew leaves. We did have a fairly large snow in early spring so I don't know if the buds froze then. I do have growth coming from the trunk...but nothing on the upper branches. Is there a way to save this tree? We're getting 100 degree days here...so I don't know if I need to wait until winter to do anything. Any advice?

I have had a huge very tall weeping cherry that has never been pruned on the top. I have just pruned the bottom branches that I could reach. If I hire someone to come in and remove the top branches that stick up straight now, will it kill the tree or should I just leave them? The tree is 15 years old.

Hello Don. I love your video because you explain every detail exactly how I would like my future snow fountain weeping cherry tree to be, like an umbrella. I bought this tree online and still waiting for it to arrive. I’m planning to plant it outside my front corner yard and now the tree is a baby tree. Only 3 ft. Any recommendations for me ( beginner). Try to make my front yard looks pretty. The owner of the nursery told me that it take about 5 years to mature? Any suggestions?

I did similar last year for my weeping cherry tree. This year it has more flowers but I did not know that the crossed and shooting-up branches need to be taken out also because I was afraid I might have overdone it even though I do not like the appearance of those branches. I am going to do that this year.Thank you very much for your tutorial.

Hello Bower & Branch! I'm curious whether this is a dwarf snow fountain version or a larger. I recently planted a larger one with hopes of keeping it formal umbrella like and rather small, maybe 10 ft. Do you think, with your technique, this might be possible?

  • @briansmith1557

Do you have (or could you create) a how-to on pruning for height? We've been in our house for 14 years and our W.C. have had very little vertical growth. They bloom well seem healthy, but don't get taller.

I have a small, young weeping cherry and DON'T want the formal umbrella look. I want a 25 ft, gnarled and beautiful fireworks effect. It's currently growing the majority of branches to the left side so I want to even it out. How should I prune? Also, is it too late to do it now that it has small leaf buds? I really don't want it putting more growth energy toward the branches that will be cut off if I can help it. PS I don't believe this tree was grafted . It was a 4 ft dormant stick when I planted it last year. There is no grafting knot, and all branches naturally weep, none grow upward like your example.

Did you manage to find the answer to your question? I'm also interested. Also how is your weeping cherry tree now?

    • @shiver222
      @shiver222 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@MagicalMonkeyMan I never found an answer, here or anywhere online 😑. I ended up just leaving it to grow natural, very very minimal pruning and training, and it's really thriving. We joke that its in its "awkward adolescent phase" because at 4 years old, it's 12-15 feet wide and only about 5.5 ft tall! It looks fine now, very healthy, but once it grows taller everyone who's seen it agrees it will look really stunning.

    • @MagicalMonkeyMan

@@shiver222 That sounds very exciting! I love the look of old weeping cherries, like the 'miharu takizakura', would you say that's what you're going for? All the young ones I've seen in videos like this one look sooo ugly to me (even when blooming) hahaha, I'm not sure if it's just the age difference, or the pruning strategy. I'm also puzzled by how Japan has cherry blossom trees like miharu takizakura which are more than a thousand years old, yet all of my searches online say they only have a life expectancy of around 25 years :/

Remove all Dead, Damaged, and Diseased wood first. Then prune to desired shape. Shape should reflect its natural habit. Umbrella is not its natural habit. To prune to reflect its natural shape and habit- remove the same length off of each branch starting with the longest branches ( ex. 2 feet off of each branch) this will create a more natural waterfall appearance.
