Hey Josh I know a guy who is a new player and he found the core book unhelpful in getting advice to running a chronicle. This video basically answers all of his questions. I feel like you wouldn't mind me sharing this video.
I don't wanna put every fantastical creature I can find into my game, but I'll definitely put into a city a sweets shop that is secretly run by a wizard. I can think of a few funny shenanigans between that mage and the players.
You did an awesome job on these videos. Ur informative and u present the material with enthusiasm. Plus the content is really helping me learn. Im running my first session in 2 days.
Long time 5e DM trying to get into Vampire the Masquerade, this is outlying story beats of what is important to this game incredibly well for me. Vibe!
I'm going for New Orleans as a setting. The majority of the area is Camarilla domain run from midtown, while the East city is a new breakaway Anarch cut. Out in Chico Lagoon and the Bayou is home to remnant Sabbat, Black Spiral Dancers, Specters, and some voodoo practiononeers. A great stirring. Almost a calling. Light a candles flame being pulled into a house fire. Every feels the desire from the Swamp, and no one claims responsibility. The sect leaders have all concluded that they are effectively in a cold war. Using proxies and subversion underneath a fragile guise of peace. Everyone wants to know what's going on. Everyone wants to be the first to find it. No it's not a box I promise. Lol
I like to put my players into a situation out the gate that's big and exciting and has a dynamic shift in the area between sects, but explicitly keeps them out of being the actual target. Gives them a feel for the sects and the game and what's going on, before moving into your session 1 stuff. For example, my current game started with the coterie of newly created vampires being kidnapped to be used by the camarilla to promote their ghouls. They were rescued in an anarch assault which ended up taking out the prince. The players got to play in an immediate high stakes environment learning about some major themes (and game in general, my players were new) before then getting around to what's going on and what sects to align with. Obvs this painted a very poor label on the camarilla, which was intended. Anyway. Just thought I'd share in response to your really good video!
Thanks a lot, Josh! I will definitely use these tips for the V5 chronicle I plan to run when I finish the D&D campaign I'm currently running. Take care, and stay healthy.
Great advice all around, and great fun with all the little drawings. I'm looking forward to 5th edition getting not only setting books, but time period books as well. There's certainly nothing stopping us from using the Dark Ages or Victorian Ages settings with 5th edition right now but newer books revisiting these times would be great. So be fore a chronicle you can not only ask WHERE it's set, but WHEN!
Thanks for this, I want to eventually do my own chronicle. But, since I'm still learning I want to try a one-shot first. Also, enjoy your appearances in Silence of Shadows.
I think it would be cool to do a true blood setting. Where the vampires live out in the open. The masquerade would be to the clans and the power they wield. Just an idea.
Hey, whats up Josh! Greatings from Brazil.Thankyou so much for such a good guide. I'll tryout with "your help" to create a game located in São Paulo or in Londrina (our hometown). I know it's a older video, but it was really helpful for me as a DM. Keep up with the good work!
This was an amazing, Josh! Im excited to get into 5th ed. I come from a VERY heavy d&d background (writing, dming, coordinating organized play) and ive been struggling with how putting a Vampire chronicle together differs from a d&d campaign. This vid helped a LOT! My question: given the strong opinions on all political sides these days, how do you, as Storyteller, prevent the game from devolving into 1 pc's political platform?
Great to hear, part of the reason I made this was for people coming from a different style of campaign :) As for the politics, I don't think any player that respects the other people at the table would try to make it their "platform". Playing true to your character and their politics is fine but having out of character conversations about what everyone expects is the best way to make sure nobody becomes uncomfortable. Either using the lines and veils or some other consent system, if one player says "I want to go on a political rant" and everyone goes, that would be fun to roleplay then that's fine! Hope that helps :D There is also a lot of useful tools and info in the core book about incorporating political stories.
@die_trinerditat3084 it's a comment section you clown. If you're going to get upset at people replying to you then turn off your notifications. Better yet don't post nonsense in the first place.
I just happen to be planning my first V5 chronicle now and I found your video very insightful. It made me think about fine-tuning my chronicle's concept and creating its non-player characters. I must admit that I giggled when you used "Tom, Dick and Harry" to name the leaders of your three sects. All in all, thanks for creating this video.
This really helped me! I have an unrelated question about thin bloods if you're still watching the comments. What would a thin-blood be able to offer a full-blooded vampire? I'm not sure what use their alchemy would be to anyone who wasn't them.
Good question. They can be useful in any way that a normal person can be useful plus they're a bit stronger? Alchemy is just a tool and having a vampire that can go out in sunlight or whatever is always handy :D
@@StrangeAdventures That is true. I was re-reading thin-blood alchemy, and it seems to me that the stuff that would be able to be given to other kindred is the wake-up potion and helping turn fractionated blood back into the real thing.
I am a firsttime Storyteller, but have been a player since 20th Anniversary Edition, and I like the looks of V5. A lot. I recently started writing my own Anarch Chronicle (in which I intend to illustrate the process of a vampiric LA that gradually gets to be devoid of Elders and the resulting power vacuum) and have had my first session 0 with a few Players (who also never played VtM before). In this Session 0 I had them play Mortal conspiracy theorists that got spooked by unusual activity (as the Cams flee San Fran for greener pastures). It went relatively well (especially toward the end) even though I'm still very green. This helped me grow a bit more confident and thanks for providing good content for people to enjoy and learn from. Keep it up, man, and don't become the monster, you're trying so hard not to be. ✌
Hey thanks for the tips! Just want to ask for more info, like me and my players are all new to VtM as a whole, what additional in-game settings/stuffs do my players and I (as the GM) need to prepare before embarking on our maiden campaign. I'm a player and sent it to my ST(we didn't start the campaign yet) for vampire the requiem 2E, great job josh, it would work in almost every game tbh, btw have you checked vampire the requiem yet? it's great, different but I think they done a lot of stuff better than the masquerade(generation vs blood potency, cain vs 185 stories from different places of where did the kindreds come from, and power scaling)

I made my first character a mekhet who was born into a family of hunters, was good but wanted to be q vampire after he fell in love with one of them(i.e. was blood bound without his knowledge, but he wanted the power so he just went along with it and love her really at the end), he has extra two banes, he can't enter a house unless invited(so he looks for a gangrol who will teach him unmarked grave), and when he's hungery his skin goes really dry and pale(higher than snow white pale) and his eyes turn red, I wanted to add repuled by garlic and never shows in mirrors but rules say only three banes(including the clan's one), he's wants to be a great assassin/blood sorcerer, he has specialties in occults about ward, and firearms about sniping. This was a very helpful video and I'm probably going end up rewatching it and using what I've learned here. I'm currently setting up to run a V20 campaign in which I'm integrating aspects of V5 that i like. The reason I'm using V20 and not just V5 is because the things in V20 I want to use in my campaign have not yet been brought into V5. My campaign is based in San Francisco which deals a lot with the Kuei-jin. I also have a Maeghar and a True Brujah in my coterie. I personally have fascination the Tal'Mahe'Ra of which I would love some V5 information for. I also hope they give us old and new clan Tzimisce in the Sabbot book. I want Vicissitude and Koldunic Sorcery. The latter even more so. My absolute favorite clan is the Salubri which I desperately want in V5! Followed up by neither clan nor bloodline Maeghar. My 3rd favorite clan are the Tremere which are in the corebook.
I left it open so that people don't get the idea they have to have everything planned out from the start but I imagined they were experimenting on them or seeing if they can turn them into ghost or maybe the Hecata was a Noddist and hated clanless or something.
question about Campaign Chronicles. I have played a few one shots to get the mechanics down. but I had a question. Chapters and Scenes. As with all RPG's what the PC's do is the backbone of how the game runs. How is it possible to or is it possible to plan Chapters and Scenes like they are in Fall of London and Chicago By Night, because you cant account/plan for everything your PC's want to do. Should I be trying to plan out what happens in each Chapter? or is it best to say "here is the start, this is the goal, i will tell you the appropriate dice rolls when they come up" or does a chapter technically end when the session is over regardless of what your player accomplish? its Chronicles I am genuinely struggling with in the area of crafting, how much detail to put in certain places, what if the players don't go there? what if they ask something i haven't planned for and that podges the whole plot i had planned for this bit. in terms of detail i have for the idea i had, is: generic locations: Princes office, hospitals, cafe's and Pubs etc key info SPC's: Prince, Doctors, Nurses, Managers, Cafe workers and of course human and kindred enemies that sort of thing, is that all the planning i need, and just insert little events here and there or do i need to be as info heavy as the books? thanks for reading p.s- as you can tell, novice GM XD
@@thekinghydra3350 Thanks mate Players ended up giving up to due time restraints and they couldn't get their heads around the fact they weren't playing "murder simulator" DND XD
I have one question, never played, looking forward to it, and I've been playing D&D for some years, now could I replace all the factions with homebrew ones? Would it work?
Yes it would work but all the books are written in the same setting just so you're prepared. The vampire Clans are equivalent to DnD Classes but they also comprise a social group. It depends on how much of the setting you want to swap out. Good luck! I'd love to hear about what you make.
@@StrangeAdventures hey, just letting you know, I kept all the clans intact, but switched all the sects, the Camarilla is not The Syndicate, The Sabbat is now the RR (Revolucionary Rebels) and the Anarchs are now the Umbralords, they do basicly the same as their original parts but all have homebrew lore :) Also big thanks to your videos, its helping alot
Important Question, cant find an answer in the Core book or the Camerilla book. What is a Violation of the Masquerade in 5E, how is a player punished in game for violating it? is it Storyteller decision? i couldn't find any info on this subject in the books thanks
Whatever you think is appropriate. I don't know if there is anywhere to give a guide but I give out anything from revoked property and privileges to death.
@@StrangeAdventures thanks for the advice, i have had a few one shots now, as a violation of the masquerade, depending on severity, i either give out reductions in humanity or stains. one of my players wanted the Cerberus coterie, then he wanted to run faster than a car, so i let him so he would learn violation, he then found the thing his coterie was supposed to be protecting was gone. He found it, but the prince made the coterie give him something of little importance to do. Designated driver for two scenes was the assigned role from the players. he had a 1 in driving, lets say, he learn his lesson XD
Hi, hi I have an idea of having my players being coma patients waking up in a lab in a small isolated town in the US, I want to randomize their clan, is that going to mess with their stats, are clans very stat heavy?
If you plan to put videos of your VTM V5 based game on youtube, do you need to buy a licences to do this? I ask as you did a game and so might have relevant experience.
Tom, Dick and Harry? Well done, sir. *Slow clap* You just got a subscriber just because of this reference :P😮 This video helped me to get an idea for my next campaign so thank you ^^
I have an important. I started into the WoD around 20 years ago and want to GM V5, which is coming to German in the next months, so I am waiting for German books, before reading. I am very excited abot 95% of the drastic changes and the nice lore development. Since Camarilla isnt the biggest player any longer and Clan loyalties moved, I am getting unsure. In the old version it was rather simple, with newbie players: Here are the standard Camarilla clans, choose between them. What am I doing, if the players want Brujah, Tremere and...Nosferatu? How is that handled in the V5 or is that up to me? How are you handling that faction topic?
I run with whatever clans the players want usually unless I have a story in mind that restricts it. If they're Camarilla and want to play Brujah for example, I just let them be the rare one that's in that Sect and let them know that they're probably going to be hated by every other member of their clan they meet lol Ultimately it's up to you.
@@StrangeAdventures Yeah, get the point, but thats its just too harsh. There would be no fun, if all hates you and I think it would fit more to Ventrue, than Burjah, in this example. But they wouldnt be happy, that for sure.
Iv had v5 for over a year and was playing on an RP revised edition server but now started to make my own game, so all the v5 stuff is new still but plot or background wise, how would you decide to use full canon, partial canon or no conan kindred from VTMs history ie Lodin or Mithras?
@@StrangeAdventures Thank you, I have used some from the lore but changed parts as Mithras is still alive in his original body but past that im attempting my own timeline
@@albertovazquezparedes457 he is but some believe hes either in torpor or hiding.. yet ive changed things slightly for my game, to give that final goal of is Mithras really alive or not

TRIGGER WARNING for some people: SA mentioned at 5:38. Kinda out of the blue - it surprised me, and thankfully I'm not triggered but you might, so I hope you're doing okay.
While it's very considerate of you to think of warning other people, topics like sexual assault should be able to be discussed in lines and veils so that everyone is on the same page to prevent triggering people too. I don't go into detail on the subject and only mention it by name.
A clan doing something horrible for a mysterious reason? and the players are supposed to be the heroes??? this is not d&d with vampires! this is terrible advice, you should put the characters between two powerful vampires (something that they cannot fight without losing their lives or worst their standing with the camarilla) bidding for power and using the characters as pawns with promises of better standing within the camarilla and seding them in pretty difficult missions, like protecting a shipment of human livestock that is being attacked by werewolves.... this is a game about monsters and horrors, not about being the hero, and death should feel like a real possibility.
Whenever players go "We wanna see Werewolves!" I go "So... you want to die?!?"
And at most I am half joking.
My first Vampire players didn't believe the NPC who told them how dangerous Lupines were. I managed to arrange it so they saw a Lupine in full form destroy two Kindred, one with a gun and one with Gangrel claws. They believed me after that!

Any room in a group you're running Josh? I want to be a player so bad. XD
question about Campaign Chronicles.
Should I be trying to plan out what happens in each Chapter? or is it best to say "here is the start, this is the goal, i will tell you the appropriate dice rolls when they come up" or does a chapter technically end when the session is over regardless of what your player accomplish?
its Chronicles I am genuinely struggling with in the area of crafting, how much detail to put in certain places, what if the players don't go there? what if they ask something i haven't planned for and that podges the whole plot i had planned for this bit.
in terms of detail i have for the idea i had, is:
generic locations: Princes office, hospitals, cafe's and Pubs etc
key info SPC's: Prince, Doctors, Nurses, Managers, Cafe workers
and of course human and kindred enemies
that sort of thing, is that all the planning i need, and just insert little events here and there
or do i need to be as info heavy as the books?
thanks for reading
p.s- as you can tell, novice GM XD
Man it's such a pity that no one replied to this comment really, I hope your game went well and you didn't gave up due to the lack of guidance!
@@thekinghydra3350
Thanks mate
Players ended up giving up to due time restraints and they couldn't get their heads around the fact they weren't playing "murder simulator" DND XD
@@richardbishop3818 That's a pity
@@thekinghydra3350 im writing a Digimon tabletop for my friends now :D
I have one question, never played, looking forward to it, and I've been playing D&D for some years, now could I replace all the factions with homebrew ones? Would it work?
Yes it would work but all the books are written in the same setting just so you're prepared. The vampire Clans are equivalent to DnD Classes but they also comprise a social group. It depends on how much of the setting you want to swap out. Good luck! I'd love to hear about what you make.
@@StrangeAdventures hey, just letting you know, I kept all the clans intact, but switched all the sects, the Camarilla is not The Syndicate, The Sabbat is now the RR (Revolucionary Rebels) and the Anarchs are now the Umbralords, they do basicly the same as their original parts but all have homebrew lore :)
Also big thanks to your videos, its helping alot
Important Question, cant find an answer in the Core book or the Camerilla book.
What is a Violation of the Masquerade in 5E, how is a player punished in game for violating it? is it Storyteller decision? i couldn't find any info on this subject in the books
thanks
You don't need a licence but it's best to check what the developer policy is on video creation
Tom, Dick and Harry? Well done, sir. *Slow clap*
You just got a subscriber just because of this reference :P😮
This video helped me to get an idea for my next campaign so thank you ^^
I have an important.
Only use them if they're interesting to you and your players, or if they're useful for the story you're telling. I only like to sprinkle a few in.
@@StrangeAdventures Thank you, I have used some from the lore but changed parts as Mithras is still alive in his original body but past that im attempting my own timeline
Mithras is in V5 too
@@albertovazquezparedes457 he is but some believe hes either in torpor or hiding.. yet ive changed things slightly for my game, to give that final goal of is Mithras really alive or not
how much is too much when stealing from vtmb?
Well i think an St must be flexible .... cause many of the players if not all of them most of the times will chuse the 3rd choise and you want have writen anything :P :P :P :P
5th? I stopped playing at 3th edition after the Gehenna lmao
Is he saying autarkis?
