When I saw CG perform last year I was hoping she would perform this song but at the end of her final set she sang a gospel song, probably for her sister. Her other sister Peggy Sue was backup and she sang Coal Miner's Daughter. Olivia Newton John died a week before her concert at the Crystal Theater in Crystal Falls, Mi. and maybe it was a tough thing for her because they were good friends. It was only a couple weeks after that show that her sister Loretta passed away. Thank you Crystal for sharing an evening of magic in the Northwoods.
She performed two shows in 1975, in Hardy, Arkansas, my hometown. Our band was selected, with two or three other locals, to perform warm up. She had been signed to this contract about a year earlier, before she had became much of a star and traveled with her band in a motor home. A local country promoter & musician Dusty Rhodes, brought her there. She was simply fabulous and so beautiful.....we were all star struck by her. Never forget her. Thanks for this post!
She's introduced as Loretta Lynn's little sister a lot, something she's always done with love and grace, even after she became a powerful force in the music industry on her own, with many crossover hits into the pop charts. When I was in high school 78-81, she had already charted with "DON'T IT MAKE MY BROWN EYES BLUE" one of the BIGGEST SONGS OF 1977 EVERYWHERE--POP and COUNTRY and has continued to chart huge hits alone and with others, like the late great EDDIE RABBIT with "JUST YOU AND I" and many, many more...I do believe it's in the 30s--yes! 30 + hit records! Such a beautiful voice, such a beautiful woman, with a beautiful heart, humble and giving, spreading her success and wealth working with countless charities all over the world. I think she deserves much more credit for her contributions than she's gotten and I NEVER give up hope she all the recognition she DESERVES AND EARNED. LOVE YOU, CRYSTAL GAYLE!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️‼️
When she says, holding your hand, this old hound dog wants to howl. A very beautiful southern girl, and there are many. This ole southern boy from Mississippi, sure appreciates a beautiful gal.
Clearly she was very young here and still developing her sound and her look. Love her voice and her songs till this day. She is very unique! Was singing "Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue" today at home. I grew up on Rock and Roll music, (My mom listened to country, which is how I came to appreciate it). My mom loves Loretta but I prefer Crystal's sound. She has the voice of an angel and the beauty to match!
Yes, she met Bill their last year in high school in Wabash. After graduation, she signed with Decca and started recording at age 19. Later that year she and Bill married. They have two children and a grandson.
Nice to see Crystal when she was just starting out. She did a great job on this song, but without the bass backing vocals, it just isn't the same. Still give it 5*****s! Thanks for posting! Have a blessed week, Jeff
Sorry you had troubles. It doesn't matter. I never knew this existed til a month ago. So greatful to see it. The only time I have ever seen her show legs. Nothing there to be ashamed of !!! I watch this and I'm in love, eventhough I'm old enough to be her father.
This is great! Thx. for posting. She seems a bit intimidated by Ralph Emory. He's a TV/Radio host been around a hundred years. Married to Skeeter Davis at one time. Once Crystal gets started, the nervousness is all gone. Have you ever seen such a beautiful young lady ? That smile and those eyes. Wonderful voice. Easy to see why Loretta Lynn tried to put her down. Couldn't stand a beautiful little sister, with an amazing voice. I imagine Loretta turns green whenever she sees these tapes.
Nice song and one which proves a Singer does not have to be half or nearly naked to attract attention. She is fully dressed in this song but her voice is so good and she sings with such feeling and depth she beats singers like Madonna, Britney Spears and others by a mile without trying.
@@donjuan8814 Problem was she was a giant star and she handled it with style and grace. Hope she plays this ONJ cover at the concert next week those two tore it up when I was younger.
@soundspur Yes, these were Crystal's early days...late 1974 or early 1975. This is based on the fact that she also sang "Wrong Road Again" on this same show and it was released as a single in August 1974. She was just coming into her own at this time as "Wrong Road Again" was her first Top Ten Hit rising to No. 6 on the charts. Not bad for a 23-year old country girl from Kentucky.
I think Brown Eyes Blue was her first song. I was in Northern Saskatchewan working for the U.S. Govt at the time, it came out. Up beyond where the road ends. I heard it all summer, and got fantacizing that the only thing that could make that song any better, was if the singer was a knockout gal, sitting at a grand piano playing, as she sang. I'm convinced she could play the piano.
"I've Cried (the Blue Right Out of My Eyes)" was Crystal's first song, and then "Sparklin' Look of Love", both written by Loretta. They are VERY country, before she was eventually advised (by Loretta) to quit singing Loretta's songs, and to develop her own style if she wanted to make a name for herself, since there was already a Loretta Lynn. So she branched out into more Cosmopolitan Country (or pop country), which ironically some of her early music is more "traditional" than this modern so-called country music you hear on mainstream radio nowadays! "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" hit the top of the Billboard charts (Country AND Pop) on Dec 3rd, 1978. I took a picture of the framed chart on the wall of her office on Music Row in late November 2018.
I used to watch her on Hee Haw, in Eastern Canada, many years ago, when I was just little, and I swear, I so much wanted hair just like hers, down to the back of my knees! She was most beautiful! Ironically I don't remember specifically what she sang, lol! I was SO young!
Okay I had no clue she was Loretta Lynn's younger sister I love Loretta Lynn and then I came across her and I was like wow so much talent and I'm and young in my early 20s and this is so good music
There may have been a little sibling rivalry going on but we have to give Loretta a lot of credit for helping Crystal get started in the business. Loretta helped get her on contract with Decca, helped pick her stage name, and helped write her early songs. Crystal's amazing talent and good looks took it from there to notch twenty #1 hit recordings. Not bad for a shy little girl from the hills of Kentucky.
Wherever you go wherever you may wander in your life Surely you know I'll always wanna be there Holding your hand and standin' by to catch you when you fall Seeing you through in everything you do Let me be there in your morning let me be there in your night Let me change whatever's wrong and make it right Let me take you through that wonder land that only two can share All I ask you is let me be there [ fiddle ] Watching you grow going through the changes in your life That's how I know I'll always wanna be there Whenever you feel you need a friend to lean on here I am Whenever you call you know I'll be there Let me be there in your morning... Beautiful really country singing by the young most beautiful Crystal. Surprisingly I think her beauty can beat Olivia Newton John and Shanel Twain somewhat. I like this clip.
The look of ladies , the hair ,the make up and jewelry back in the 70s looks like very current , like nowadays however in the 80s up to the early 90s everything changed ,the bright and agressive make up the big explosive hair and not to mention shoulder pads it really looks old, even though it is not as old as the 70s.
Awesome. She definitely had a little more country twang in the early years. A great performer then and even better now! Was that Grizzly Adams that introduced her? There is fifteen years difference between her and Loretta.
How far have we come since this time! Can you imagine introducing any female vocalist as "This week's pretty girl"! It is so demeaning, but in those days nobody seemed to think it was out of place (except maybe secretly).
marcel T people are too politically correct. We can sexually assault women but there shouldn’t be a problem with someone calling THE DAMNED BEA U TI FUL CRYSTAL GAIL what she is, a beautiful woman
Not sure how being called "pretty" is so "demeaning." Yes, Crystal is gorgeous as heck, even now. Today is her 68th birthday (Jan 9, 1951). You'd never know it by seeing her in person! Wow! So gorgeous, with a voice just as beautiful as way back when she first started.
The raw power in her voice is awesome! She does the same song a few months later and is smoother than Slik! same power but more like what we've come to know.

Take me back when music was real & singers had quality to their voice & knew how to get all dressed up for a performance!
Wow, Crystal Gayle looks gorgeous in this 1970's classic!!
She still has amazing voice, too. I saw her last week in concert.
I saw her two weeks ago she's hasn't skipped a beat.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone as attractive. What a knockout
Olivia Newton John sang this too and made it #1. Crystal sings it great too. Love her.

she is drop dead gorgeous
I thought so back in 1977. (I thought her long hair made her sexy. Plus her being Loretta's little sister.)
My all-time dream woman...
