My favorite scene in both this cartoon and the original book. For those who may be interested, the old hag with the bedcurtains was Scrooge's "charwoman" (a sort of British rent-a-maid), the other woman (called "Mrs. Dilber" in the book)was his laundress (she used to clean his laundry and rooms), and the man in black, of course, the undertaker (or in the book, the undertaker's assistant). The "eye-patch" man ("Old Joe" in the book) was a rag-and-bottle merchant (or junk dealer).
This is THE BEST EVER Christmas cartoon!!! I have them all on DVD and spent hours watching them. My kids don't love Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol like I do, but that's life. I still make them watch it. I have 4 copies of it. This song and one he sings at the school are my favorites.
It's amazing how this cartoon musical has remained one of my fondest tv memories from when I was a little boy. The LA, LA, LALALALALA song was always my favorite! The part with just their mouths & the dark background used to scare me too, dog453678! LOL
Finally got my 8 year old daughter into all of the old Christmas Specials. Never would've guessed that Magoo's Christmas Carol would've ended up as her favorite! She loves this song.
I also have this on DVD, and now Im about to watch it in its entirety! My family has a ritual of making sure we all watch this together at this time of year :) cause we also used to watch this on TV
What's amazing about this song is that this was written for a TV cartoon, yet it could easily be a hit song on a real Broadway stage. The lyrics are freaking hilarious, and the "bits" (pounding each other, tossing flowers while singing) are very funny. Catchy tune, great lyrics and choreography...this song has it all.
Remember the first time it was aired when I was a little one with my friends. We as kids had to watch it every year then on. Now as an Adult I purchased the DVD last year and will watch it again this year. Guess I'm just a Big Kid.
I just finished watching this with my folks tonight! I love this movie! Best line of the movie was at the very beginning. SO glad I found it! XDD Merry Christmas, everyone!!
I'm a school custodian. Two I work with also worked together part time somewhere else. One got the other fired(!)at the other job. But they act like the best of friends where we all work together, even though they steal supplies from each other. At the other school buildings in the district, there's others like this. I can even imagine all of them singing and performing together like this, all the while picking each other's pockets! It's a funny situation, really! The lyrics fit them well.
In a normal Mr. Magoo cartoon, they would be the inept bad guys Magoo would eventually defeat (unwittingly of course, due to his nearsightedness), but as this is A Christmas Carol...
ALL: We’re despicable We make ourselves plain sick-able. OLD JOE: Berate ourselves, hate ourselves viciously CHARWOMAN: Still none of us wishes he Could change We’re slick and shifty birds OLD JOE & UNDERTAKER: With fingers quick as fifty birds CHARWOMAN: While stealing your purse or your ticky-tock UNDERTAKER: Just for a kick we knock You flat! ALL (including MRS. DILBER): La, la, la-la-la-la-la La, la, la-la-la-la-la La, la, la-la-la-la-la We’re just blankety-blank-blank No good! OLD JOE: We’re not tea party blokes No chitty-chat and ‘earty jokes CHARWOMAN: We’re twice as bloodthirsty as cannibules UNDERTAKER: And wilder than animules Are we. ALL: We’re reprehensible UNDERTAKER: We’ll steal your pen and pencible CHARWOMAN: Then sneer at you, leer at you naughtily OLD JOE & UNDERTAKER: And really we ought to be In jail! ALL (including MRS. DILBER): La, la, la-la-la-la-la La, la, la-la-la-la-la La, la, la-la-la-la-la We’re just blankety-blank-blank All bad!
I have LOVED this cartoon since I was a little kid...I hum/sing the "chorus" whenever I want to communicate to someone that they are a tool, a jackass, a naieve little boob who can be taken advantage of without effort... I LOVE THIS CARTOON!!! :)
Was I the only kid who ever found these four to be some of the creepiest characters ever in a holiday special? They're not trying to 'destroy Christmas' or some such goofy thing but yow are they ever vile!
Thanks for the post......a local station just ran the full version [seldom done] and I did a search for my favorite song from it and here it is! Too bad this has never done as a live show on Broadway! It would certainly be a hit! Merry Christmas!
ROFL! This just transported me back 35 years & how my mom would yell at my brothers & I while we beat each other like the despicable crew did. Thanks for making my night & passing this song along to my own kids :)
I always thought that it might be a good idea to publish the words and music of this cartoon so it could be used for kids xmas school plays. It would come in under an hour and the kids would have fun learning the songs. At least a change of pace from the drivel that usually passes for school theatre! merry xmas!
It was tradition for my family, too, to watch this when I was a kid. Seems like they showed this special every year for about the first 25 after it was new. Now they rarely show it. Thanks for sharing this, this was one of my favorite parts of the show! The hag in the old blue/gray dress looks just like my neighbor!
Thanks for the lyrics! The writer of this song was pretty creative, huh? Unfortunately, these four in the Plunderers March remind me of some people I work with......
The best part is when they turn into mouths with some of them losing their teeth in the last "la- la" bit. It was both funny and a bit scary at the same time. The other part is when they finish the last part of the two choruses is by knocking the laundress with a mallet two times! But before that they shoved her hat over her face, causing her to struggle to remove it until she and the gang got to same two choruses. Classic! LOL.
We're de-spicable We make ourselves, plain sick-able We hate ourselves Grate ourselves, viciously Still none of us wishes he...could shine We're slick and shifty birds, With fingers quick...as fifty birds. While stealing your purse or your ticky-tock Just for a kick we knock...you flat! La. La. La la la. La. La. La la la. La. La. La la la. We're just blankety-blank-blank no good!
While a catchy tune, think about this song for a moment- They're not singing to anyone. They don't know Magoo and The Ghost are there. They spontaneously start to sing for no apparent reason.
Great Disney, six years later after this HB, BONGG effect..The SImpsons Ride uses this when Homer, and us, get hit by the rwrecking ball!! HB classic. And THIS was BETWEEN DIKSNEY AND HB using it [1961]!
Damn, I would have never figured out that they were despicable had it not been for this song, lol. But seriously, this song is great, it plays on your expectations, adds comic relief, while also progressing the story by showing Scrooge feeling the pain of what he does to others everyday, he was really nothing different before the ghosts.
But he was. He made his entire fortune the honest way. He did nothing illegal, just took honest advantages of honest opportunities when they knocked. Seize the moment, then hold onto the profits by not engaging in frivolity, even at the cost of his own comfort. How is this illegal? No one says you *Need* to heat your home and office if you wish not to. Who is he stealing from by not expending his coal in a hurry?
1 thing I noticed. At the beginning of the clip, the undertaker is wearing glasses, but when they were laughing at that 1 woman, he isn't wearing any glasses.
One question: Paul Frees voices both the undertaker and the eye-patch guy when speaking, but when they're singing, the latter has a different voice. Why?
We're not tea party blokes, No chitty-chat...and arty-chokes We're twice as bloodthirsty as cannibules And wilder than ani-mules...are we. We're rep-pre-hensible We'll steal your pen...and pencible Then sneer at you, leer at you...naughtily. And really we ought to be...in jail. La. La. La-la-la. La. La. La-la-la. La. La. La-la-la. We're just blankety-blank-blank all bad!
Just had to come here after seeing the way NBC butchered this number on their "50th anniversary" airing of "Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol." (They tossed out the second half of the song.)
My Mom and I have a tradition where we watch this every Christmas, and this is always our favorite scene.
The scene of young Scrooge in classroom is one of the saddest most melancholy ever. Hard to get thru that song without a tear
Who knows what other things he did throughout the years. It introduces him as an "old rascal," after all.
“All I Got Was His SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETS!!!”
Everyone else: 😆

I too as a young boy thought the "part with just their mouths & dark background" was indeed scary.
Finally got my 8 year old daughter into all of the old Christmas Specials. Never would've guessed that Magoo's Christmas Carol would've ended up as her favorite! She loves this song.
It’s the best Christmas-villain song since “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch”
I also have this on DVD, and now Im about to watch it in its entirety! My family has a ritual of making sure we all watch this together at this time of year :) cause we also used to watch this on TV

Mr Magoo is wearing his contacts for once he seeing things clearly I notice.
Thanks for posting this hadnt seen it in years!
one of my favorites.
I always think of some kind of Black Market when I hear this music and this song
My entire life, always my favorite number from Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol!
Thanks so much for posting this!
I crack up when the Undertaker starts throwing those flower petals!
Remember the first time it was aired when I was a little one with my friends. We as kids had to watch it every year then on. Now as an Adult I purchased the DVD last year and will watch it again this year. Guess I'm just a Big Kid.
it isnt Christmas without this treasure from my childhood...Merry Christmas everyone
"AlL i GoT wAs HiS sHeEt!" Lol the way she said it so exitedly XD
You have no idea how long I've been looking for this song
For some reason this came to my mind at 2am. Good on ya brain.
They even acknowledge that they should be in jail.
I have fond memories of this Christmas cartoon. I love this song.

Too funny grew up watching it 60 now 😊😅❤
The silhouetted mouths always got to me whenever I'd see this on TV.
How the hell did this bunch not get their own show?!!!!
Because they ran for Parliament... and won.
In a normal Mr. Magoo cartoon, they would be the inept bad guys Magoo would eventually defeat (unwittingly of course, due to his nearsightedness), but as this is A Christmas Carol...

This movie is a classic for my family
We watch it every Christmas
I have LOVED this cartoon since I was a little kid...I hum/sing the "chorus" whenever I want to communicate to someone that they are a tool, a jackass, a naieve little boob who can be taken advantage of without effort... I LOVE THIS CARTOON!!! :)

Eric Hinkle You're not, one of my sisters refuses to ever watch this scene because it creeps her out!
+ToolGal462 They make me laugh too but they're still creeps.
Four yeasr before l was born ,...... CLASSIC!👍👍
Thanks for the post......a local station just ran the full version [seldom done] and I did a search for my favorite song from it and here it is! Too bad this has never done as a live show on Broadway! It would certainly be a hit! Merry Christmas!
Right up there with "Master of the House" and "You've got to pick a pocket or two" and "Have a little priest!"
"We'll steal your Pen and Pencible!" LOL!!!
Absolutely. This special had some very talented song writers.
i agree with you 100%. this made an already magical time of year all the more better.
ROFL! This just transported me back 35 years & how my mom would yell at my brothers & I while we beat each other like the despicable crew did. Thanks for making my night & passing this song along to my own kids :)
It wasn't Christmas till we watched "Mr Magoo's A Christmas Carol".
This is so good it could be a song from a Tim Burton movie.
Agreed to the 10th power
you brought it back I was looking for this thank you
I always thought that it might be a good idea to publish the words and music of this cartoon so it could be used for kids xmas school plays. It would come in under an hour

Man, I've been looking for this everywhere! My favorite scene! Thanks for uploading!
My favorite song from the movie.
Watched the show last week on Freeform TV. This song was omitted.

Daffy Duck and Gru's theme song
🎵 A shave and a haircut, two bits! 🎵 * bonk! * * wham! *
Villain Song!
Wow, what a blast from my past!
The best part is when they turn into mouths with some of them losing their teeth in the last "la- la" bit. It was both funny and a bit scary at the same time. Even better than what I thought.
my favorite song from this film
This scene was cut from the version we taped off TV. it was from Channel 66 in December, 1986.
This is my mother's favorite song
I always wondered who it was that stole my ticky-tock and my pencible.
My dad laugh at this every year
perfect villain song
I remember when i wz little i use 2 think they were scary. but they make me laugh now. "We're just blankedy blank blank, no good!" lol
The line is not "rape"; "rate" perhaps. This was a family show after all.
"we're reprehensible, we'll steal your pen and pencible."
LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!! "All I got was his SHEEEeeeeeets"
I think it was more that they cut it out to broad cast it in one hour. My favorite scene!
LOVE THIS!!!..lol....😛🤣🤣
Perfect! Made my 100% excellent Christmas even better :)
Merry Christmas ALL :)
Tory/Magoo
We're de-spicable
We make ourselves, plain sick-able
We hate ourselves
Grate ourselves, viciously
Still none of us wishes he...could shine
We're slick and shifty birds,
With fingers quick...as fifty birds.
While stealing your purse or your ticky-tock
Just for a kick we knock...you flat!
La. La. La la la. La. La. La la la.
La. La. La la la. We're just blankety-blank-blank no good!
I think this song is hilarious, though it scared me SO much when I was kid.
While a catchy tune, think about this song for a moment- They're not singing to anyone.

You know the flowers that the undertaker tosses? What if those were actually blown tissues he's collected from people grieving for their lost ones?
best thing not on broadway
Damn, I would have never figured out that they were despicable had it not been for this song, lol. Oops! Sorry, my bad. Thanks for the corrections. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Paul Frees was the speaking voices for Old Joe and the Undertaker, but in the song he only sang for the Undertaker. Anybody know why?
i love this song hah
Love it!!😊
1 thing I noticed. At the beginning of the clip, the undertaker is wearing glasses, but when they were laughing at that 1 woman, he isn't wearing any glasses.
@SamuraiSam I'm sorry, but it is actually, "We make ourselves plain sick-able."
One question: Paul Frees voices both the undertaker and the eye-patch guy when speaking, but when they're singing, the latter has a different voice. Why?
We're de-spicable,
We make ourselves plain sickable,
Berate ourselves,
Hate ourselves viciously,
Still none of us wishes he,
Could change....
i sing this every year
We're not tea party blokes,
No chitty-chat...and arty-chokes
We're twice as bloodthirsty as cannibules
And wilder than ani-mules...are we.
We're rep-pre-hensible
We'll steal your pen...and pencible
Then sneer at you, leer at you...naughtily.
And really we ought to be...in jail.
La. La. La-la-la. La. La. La-la-la.
La. La. La-la-la. We're just blankety-blank-blank all bad!
2:14 and 2:18 are the best moments ever. I love the flowers and the undertaker.
If you pay attention, the man wearing black is voiced by Paul Frees.
Right, and even though Paul also voices Old Joe speaking, someone else is doing his singing voice.
Thumbs up if you still watch this special every year, even in 2024! (I break out the blu-ray every Christmas!)
@SamuraiSam
It's "we berate ourselves."
Dance cracks me up
1 person just got his sheets.
Well, it's supposed to be a show within a show - they're singing to the audience.
@jaylee1417
He said "berate ourselves".
That's kinda funny. The tape I got it from took it from a television showing. Guess it wasn't avoided every time.
Yes, I have the whole show. I'll upload it sometime this week.
That is great LOL!!!
the Goldman Sachs theme song
XD
Just had to come here after seeing the way NBC butchered this number on their "50th anniversary" airing of "Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol." (They tossed out the second half of the song.)
LALA LALALALALA....
