I will never tire of watching John's brilliant and effortless volleys.
John was a brilliant tennis player but his on court antics will forever tarnish his reputation. He could be a real asshole.

Incredible the density of spectators in the stands. There wasn't a place left. At the time I was a child, it was broadcast on one of the 3 public television channels in France. That Sunday, the audience was monumental.
The match that changed the trajectory of two careers! One of the greatest matches of all time.
To me, this and the 1984 US Open semifinal between McEnroe and Connors are the two best matches I have ever watched.
I´m still sad for John, but on the other hand I´m grateful for the incredible match they both gave us that day.

McEnroe went 82-3 in that season. This was his first loss of the year.
And if I remember correctly he voluntarily lost to some Indian dude during some summer US tournament only to have better rest for the upcoming US Open. At least he said so in an interview few years later. Ciao!
@@Stiffjab71 I mean he was unbeatable here for two sets. He also skipped the Australian Open, which was common among top players because back then it was held during the Christmas season. Chris Evert only attended the AO 6 times in her long career (but reached the final every time, winning twice). It's a really different game now. Federer's best season ratio was 81-4 and that wasn't even his best season.

Lendl was like a heavyweight fighter. The longer the match went the better he got. You had to knock him out. When McEnroe lost the fourth set, he knew it was slipping away. Great match.

Lendl had lost all four of his grand slam finals thus far. McEnroe was world number 1 and playing the best tennis of his career. When he went two sets up quite easily I bet nobody gave Lendl a chance.
They probably gave him more of a chance than they gave Nadal to come back from two sets and a break down to beat Medvedev.

What a match! Two all time greats and a fantastic rivalry. One of the greatest and most consequential matches in tennis history.
Legendary Roland-Garros final !!! I still remember watching it on tv at a warm June day in Athens 38 years ago :-)
I found it weird at the end when Lendl went to his chair without even walking back onto court to receive more applause, and was instantly rushed by the press. I’m glad that doesn’t happen any more, give the man a moment at least to drink and savour his achievement.

38 years and rewatching this match still causes pain!! I admire Lendl much more now than I did then. The guy worked his tail off to maximize the talent he had. That is incredibly admirable and I'm a fan of his now. Having said that, McEnroe played so astonishingly brilliant and then threw the match away. I had never seen all-court and serve and volley work like that on Roland Garros' slow red clay. And the clay was slower back then than it is now. To top it off, Mac was doing it against Ivan Lendl's massive power and consistency.
McEnroe's failure to work as hard as Lendl, Borg, Connors, etc. started to bite him in the 3rd set , began to haunt him in set 4 and tortured him in the 5th set. Very sad and difficult to watch. Lendl was a great player due to being so intelligent about training and working hard, maybe even better than McEnroe. Their overall head to head record suggests that. However, on this day, before fatigue set in, John McEnroe was producing other worldly tennis on clay court's highest stage. Never seen tennis like that before on red clay! Were it not for temper outbursts that motivated Lendl and Mac's poor relative fitness to his opponent, he should have demolished Lendl in straight sets. It was almost unbelievable to see what he was doing to Lendl's game in the 1st 2.5 sets. The tennis was that superb. Considering the greatness of the opponent, I never saw serve and volley played like that again on slow red clay.
There is certainly a life lesson for all athletes in this example........ work hard and shut your mouth:)

WRONG . McEnroe didnt throw the match away , Lendl WON the match because he was THE BETTER PLAYER on clay in general and THE BETTER PLAYER on clay that day . I was 16 and I idolized McEnroe. This match still breaks my heart. Those magnificent first two sets and then pure torture. Darn you, Lendl! So easy to contemplate the ifs after the fact, but McEnroe completely routed Connors at Wimbledon and nearly the same to Lendl at the U.S. Open. He could've had the Grand Slam in his wheelhouse if it wasn't for.....Lendl! :) Great match. Thank you for the video.

I was 9 at the time. I still occasionally rewatch it because o hated the rude and arrogant McEnroe. His sadness tastes so sweet even today, as he has indicated in interviews that he never got over it. And all that from two sets up, against an opponent who he was very dismissive about (“I have more talent in one finger than Lendl in his entire being”). Ahhh…!

Deep, sincere gratitude that this was posted, in this format, that is, the entire thing. Given the epic, seminal nature of this match, I have to note the generosity in that and thank you. This has turned out to be the treat of this mid-summer. Like many who have replied here, just the deepest of memories and impressions about this taut, compelling match. Would have been 30 at the time, but felt very much the young person in understanding what was happening, being somewhat new to tennis. Very impressionable, in other words, but sensing even then the this was a major clash. Lastly, to give a sense of how epic an encounter this was, for simply too, too many reasons to capture here, this match became the subject, the context for a really entertaining sports film called In the Realm of Perfection, which plums the considerable depths to all that was going on over these nearly four hours. Kind of an Art House treatment, but still very much a sports movie. A hearty recommend.
Thank you for posting this, one of the greatest tennis matches ever. I remember watching the NBC broadcast of this so well. To this day I cannot figure out how Johnny Mac let this one slip away after toying with Lendl in the first two sets, and by playing serve and volley on clay. People I knew who weren't even into tennis were talking about this match the following week.
I think McEnroe was winning. He lost his energy. He "gassed out", in modern terms.
I was wanting for John McEnroe to win. He had all the artistry.
Lendl and Borg , and even Connors had far more endurance for longer matches.
Mac was winning. Lendl was an endurance athlete, like Borg. Mac gassed out.
I wanted Mac to win!
Paris can get quite warm during the
FO, and players that are not used to the heat, or going 5 sets on clay (common), or not in top shape, suffer.

Lendl's problem was his head! In an earlier Grand Slam final against Conners, after a clear 2 to 0 set lead, with the title in sight, he suddenly served from underneath and lost that final! This Head weakness was also visible against Chang! For Lendl, who had already been world champion 5 times by then, it was a milestone, because when he was seemingly hopelessly behind, he was finally able to play free and look at Becker, Sampras, Paris has never been the home of serve and volley players! If Lendl hadn't had this head problem, this wouldn't have been his first title, but 4-8! You could always see this in Wimbledon, easy in Queens (even with serve and volley) and the day after, bad in Wimbledon!

@@minoX6 Or perhaps you are young enough that you didn't see the era McEnroe played in where they used heavy tree branches, steel and aluminum to hit a tennis ball, with small heads on the racquet producing a tiny sweet spot and inferior strings.😎
Today's technology is so much better, lighter, and more accurate. The players can swing a racquet that's much lighter, has a huge sweet spot to produce a powerful stroke almost everywhere the ball hits on the racket, and strings that impart crazy amounts of spin that Force the ball to land in many times.
None of this was easily attainable in the wooden racquet era. Especially the spin and the power.
Add to that the fact that Roland Garros was slower prior to the mid-90s. Wimbledon, on the other hand, played much faster in McEnroe, Lendl, Borg era. The ball wouldn't bounce high (stayed low) and the bounce was very inconsistent due to the type of grass that they traditionally used.

I remember this... Lendl was my favorite player in that era. He was really the only player that had the passing shot for Mac. But Mac was supreme at the net as well.

I don't think that anyone watching this match would have thought that they had in Ivan Lendl the blueprint for what tennis would become in the ensuing 40 years. The killer forehand, the oversized metal racquet, the emphasis on fitness and the marketing (flashy apparel with ads ), all of it in one single package in a guy with little on-court personality.

One of my favourite tennis players when I was a child. This brings back memories of my love for the game.
I was a lil chap when I saw this match. I always loved lendl and becker. Those two were my favorites growing up.
Mcenroe’s game was amazing. Looks like his serve motion was very continuous (following years became slower) great volley. Love watching his game from the back, he stood so close to baseline , absorbed opponent’s power with great slice and his change of rythm jumping to the net with such audacity is truly unique. He was in very good shape . Those first two sets are remarkable and hace not seen such a dominant aggressive creative and graceful game in any other player. A Bob Dylan of tennis

He was at his peak here. He went 82-3 that year and yes, his game was so seductive. The grace and beauty of his serve and the impossibly crisp volleys (done all totally against the way it’s taught)...he was a maestro of the highest order.

In a recent awesome (2018?) televised get together with Wilander, Lendl, Becker, and McEnrone, that was said by one of the others and McEnroe quickly agreed.
McEnroe's 1984 win-loss record was 82-3, so there was no where to go but downhill. But yeah.... it was a steeper downhill than it should have been (and that's when I started to lose interest in watching tennis).

Oh oui c'est vraiment la plus belle finale de Roland Garros de tte l'histoire de ce tournoi..Ivan Lendl héroïque, fut de tte manière très solide durant cette quinzaine pluvieuse et maussade, sur cette terre battue plus lente que jamais..le tchécoslovaque avait notamment écarté avec beaucoup de brio, Jarryd, Gomez et surtout Wilander, complètement surclassé en demi-finale...McEnroe fut solide, à défaut d'être brillant, face à Higueras, Arias,et Connors..big mac retrouvera tte sa magie durant deux sets et demi, mais Ivan le Terrible fit prendre d'un courage et d'une résistance physique à tte épreuve pour finalement remporter la Coupe des Mousquetaires....le tchécoslovaque paiera physiquement sa formidable épopée parisienne même si Lendl atteindra le demi-finales à wimbledon face à Connors..en juillet 84,chez lui à hradec kralove, sur sa surface favorite ( suprême en indoor),Lendl fut surclassé par un Leconte époustouflant, en quart de finale de Coupe Davis..il atteindra à nouveau la finale de l'USOPEN pour y être exécuté par un McEnroe au sommet de son art..il faudra attendre le printemps 85,pour retrouver un Lendl plus menaçant que jamais pour McEnroe..

@@richfaulkner1527 I am a Lendl fan all the way But McEnroe on 1984 was unstoppable. During the first 2 sets of the FO he dominated Ivan on his favorite surface. John won 4 tournaments in clay and was able to beat Ivan twice in clay. Great times for tennis.

1981 quarters and 1988 4th round were their other 2 matches at French Opens, so this was their 2nd clash, and what a great match this was, the year before Lendl finally won the US Open in 1985.

After so many consecutive losses against McEnroe, including some on clay, Lendl showed a lot of character to continue fighting when he trailed badly. McEnroe in 1984 had no problems handling Ivan's groundstrokes. Lendl needed his whole arsenal, including quite a few outstanding lobs, to get through this match. It was quite a physical test too. I wouldn't normally mention a chair umpire, but I thought he did a great job of controlling the crowd. He was right to refuse to check marks too.

Yes, and then just after that you see Mac stumble and Lendl nearly barf out the contents of that recently drunk water. It was a grueling match for both of them.
3:55:25 is the moment I'll always remember. Mcenroe with his head down while Ivan hoists the trophy. The absolute devastation in that moment was unreal.

McEnroe was best serve and volley player.Ivan Lendl was the best baseliner.They played many finals.Initially McEnroe was dominating (from 1981-1984).Afterwards (1985-1988) Lendl mastered McEnroe.Both are all time greats.

Lendl won 2 sets down and trailing 2-4 in the fourth set and when on to win the match. That's is the class of a quality player
I was a 13yo kid who had been serious about tennis for a couple yrs and was a huge Lendl fan during this time. Mad Mac was in the middle of his dominance of tennis, so when he sprinted to a 2-0 lead, I was sad and thought about going outside to play…Mac was literally invincible during this era with his revolutionary net game.
But I watched a little bit more…then more…and finally some more. It never felt possible that Lendl would win this match despite his comeback - there was the lingering feeling that Mac was simply too good at that time.
Even until that last point, it felt like Lendl was always one bad play from doom…but then that last volley by Mac went wide.
Nobody in that stadium could believe it…and nobody watching on TV could believe it either. Lendl had broken through with his first major…and beat the invincible Mad Mac after being down 2-0.
I was a happy 13yo kid that day…
The tennis from Mcenroe in the first two sets was the best ive ever seen ( given the era we are looking at ) The way he played on clay was absolute genius. He totally ran out of steam but those first two sets were brilliant.

That was Ivan's strength. He was supremely fit and would just wear his opponents down until their weaknesses used to show and then he would pounce. Ivan was one of the greatest men's tennis players to ever pick up a racket.

The only real blip on arguably the best men's tennis season of all time. As great as Djoker was last year, the competition isn't as still for the era as Mac's was in 1984 with Lendl, Connors, Edberg, Wilander, Noah, etc all still playing at a high level near their primes.

the over-development of technology makes everything less democratic, and this is also true for tennis - the difference between the top players and the rest is much bigger now, exactly as it is the difference among the rich and the poor. I'm not being nostalgic, it's just facts: you want as much comfort as possibile, and as high a technology as possibile, then you you get it, and you lose freedom and equality.
The most humble and subdued champion celebration I have ever seen. Not only did he win a slam, but it was his first ever after 4 final losses, yet he just ran to give a quick handshake and immediately sat down! No sobbing on the court. No throwing kisses to the crowd. Not even a single roar! And the press attacking him with mikes in his face immediately and not even giving him a second to breathe? Come on!
Unfortunately, McEnroe was the exact opposite of Lendl, acting like a spoiled brat, who couldn't even get himself to clap once when Lendl got the trophy, refused to raise his runner-up prize for the cameras, and then took off the second Lendl finished his (once again) brief humble statement at the end.
