      My headcanon is that the only reason is that Dung Eater is basically a serial killer, carrying out his “work” in secret. He was obviously caught for something and imprisoned, but maybe the Order never had a full grasp on the extent of his crimes and didn’t want to know. Since the Roundtable Hold is basically a projection of the fortified manor in Leyndell, I think it’s also mostly safe to assume that his tidy collection of corpses were at least transported there post-Shattering and he could get away with it. Maybe he was hunting and defiling the citizens of Leyndell and that’s when he was caught. What Roderika tells us disturbed me personally, since it implies that he’s always surrounded by basically a maelstrom of souls crying out in unending agony.

      Shabbir litterally genocided and damned a group and prisoned them away all on a tale. They also were cursed in some way, due to their nature of having the frenzy flame spells and mabey tried to said they were trying to burn the erdtree. They were reviled hunted killed and put away. Dung eater was a serial killer that was intheory hung and died. However came back to life due to his nature of being a tarnished. So his whole plan wasn't known and wasn't on a level as shibiri yet. However he'd have taken the place if his plan was further in motion.

    Dung Eater was the only character I wanted to kill in Elden Ring. There are lots of heinous characters in the game, but I always felt a sadness ending them. A cruel necessity to fixing the Lands Between. But when I freed Dung Eater in the sewer, and heard his ramblings of murder, defilement, and how he would kill again, I had a visceral reaction. In a game all about killing, I finally found someone I wanted dead. I fought him, barely surviving, and ended him there and then. It was the only time I felt the murder was just.

    We kinda know that the omen affliction can spread as we see omen horns on red albinaurics and Sanguine Nobles. The current dominant theory is that those enemies were infected because they drank or otherwise ingested Mohg blood. If that is the case it kinda shines a new light on why Dung Eater can be summon for Mohg, the Omen and Morgott boss fight. Dung Eater hunts down the omens because he needs their blood to defile the corpses of his victims.
    Interestingly enough the horned omens in the Leyndell Catacombs are capable of attacking the player with cursed spirits similarly to one of the Dunk Eaters attacks. It kinda implies that the omens themselves also eat souls of their victims.

    I found it hard to ignore Dung Eater's comically-sized Sunlight Covenant medallion. I'm not trying to make some tinfoil stretch to say he's Solaire reborn, but I do think Miyazaki and FS like to play with their own symbology. They've taken great pains to make the Dung Eater the most vile and revolting character in any of their games, but instead of a boss they made him an NPC which the player must take great pains to develop. To me, in a metatextual way the Seedbed Curse mirrors the way players interact with NPCs across these games: reviving them with each playthrough, toying with their fates over and over, summoning them for bosses or to obtain loot and then casting them aside. Feels like Solaire got sick of it and wants to turn off the cooling fan on your Playstation

    Melina doesn't like it when you come in contact with Three Fingers, but she doesn't care when you use the Dung Eater rune that will curse all lives to come, or the Fia rune that will warp life itself, I hope it was intentional on the developers' part, so they can better clarify things in possible future DLCs. Also want a Marika, Melina, Ranni boss fight

      To me, this is prefectly consistent with what Melina says about life. She says that any path *other* than the one that leads to the Frenzied Flame is one that will sustain life. "Births will continue" she says, as a self-evident good. In Melina's view, the Dung Eater's vision of the future is acceptable because it doesn't halt the process of births or end the existence of life. Even if that life is cursed, it doesn't matter (although if everyone is cursed, then surely no one is? and if the Golden Order is gone, will it even be considered a curse?)

    @mralabbad7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    I honestly think though the defilement part is certainly abhorrent, his goal is kind of a noble one.
    Discrimination towards the omens is awful in the game's world. The perfumers would try to cut off baby's horns to prevent the curse from affecting them but most babies die from the procedure. And the ones that survive still get affected by the curse anyway. So some perfumers gave up and decided the only way to ease their pain is to just kill them. So they drink potions that take away their emotions and became "omen killers". All that because marika took away death from the elden ring and the omens blessed by the crusible now are haunted by the restless souls that want to be reborn through the erdtree rather than just die and move on like old times. Now they're not just haunted but also hunted and reviled by all those who follow the golden order. If the rebirths stopped and everyone became an omen they'd stop being haunted and having nightmares and the discrimination would stop because everyone is an omen now.

    I think people keep misunderstanding one thing: none of the endings, except maybe the frenzy one, have you break the Greater Wills holds on the Lands Between. The Erdtree is not what binds the lands to the Greater Will, the Elden Rings itself is and all the ending have you repair the ring in one way or another. All you do is establish a new order that still serves under the Greater Will, even in the Ranni ending you just have Ranni replace Marika as the vassal god.
    Again all ending except maybe the Frenzy one, that one I'm not sure of.

      @EVeljko 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Sir-Pleiades Outer gods are called outer because they are outside the scope of the current order not because they are from outer space. In Ranni's ending, what you do is set her up as a new vassal god to the Greater Will, basically just replacing Marika. There were other vassal gods before Marika, like the dragon god that Placidusax was the elden lord to, but they still served the Greater Will, since they also used the Elden Ring.
      It's kinda hard to explain, but basically, in the original japanese version the Greater Will is talked about as a higher power, like the biblical God, but outer gods are basically lesser gods, like gods of specific aspects of nature. All the outer gods mentioned in the story are outer because they are connected to death in one way or another, and the Golden Order was created when Marika removed the concept of death from the world.

    I don't think the Dung Eater should be considered the most evil character in Elden Ring, his goal was at least somewhat noble, since he believes being an omen is a blessing and wants to give it to everybody, even if his methods are cruel. There is Godrick, who is a selfish man who does not care about killing and dismembering people only to become stronger, there is Mogh, whose only motivation is pure hatred and does not care about his followers, only about his dinasty coming to power, as some kind of revenge against those who imprisoned him, but I think the worst would be Shabriri, since his goal is to literally burn down and kill everything, and making the world suffer while everything dies, since the people afflicted by madness do not seem to be having a lot of fun. Although Shabriri also has a justification for what he does, he literally wants to bring the apocalypse purposefully

      The 3 ending is essentially a giant reset button breaking all of existence down into one again. This is how everything was in the beggining and there is no reason the Greater Will "the only true god" couldn't make life again. The 3 fingers and the 2 are ying and yang. Order and chaos, both are good and bad and neither can exist without the other.

      I was just thinking about this myself. Lore wise, Shabriri is the most hated, but you never really get to see that. Sure he pops up in a dead body, but there's no real build up to it. When you first hear him, he's plea to spare the maiden's life seems very sound. We don't get to see just how loathsome he actually is.
      But with Dung Eater, we actively see it, experience it. We follow his quest line and see the horrors first hand. To us, he would be the most hated of the NPCs purely because we only get to see Shabriri once and he really doesn't do anything. Only by the lore of the world and the cut content do we know how evil he really is.

    Dung eater creates the dark soul, in essence.
    Once the order is broken at the end of time, and the dark soul has all of humanity within it, it becomes a God in its own right.
    As the cold returns and time starts over again, the world is left in a state of rock, and dragon.
    Deep within the roots of the world, the lingering heat of lords keeps a tiny flame burning.
    This tiny flame is found by the few wretched entities remaining, and they become lords of the new world.
    And all the humanity of the lands between has now become the dark soul, waiting for the pygmy to take it up, and bring humanity back to the cosmos.
    And that too, at the end of time, will be sopped up by Gael, and vomited into a new, black and cold world with a hint of flame at its very bottom.
    And all the while, the living cosmos tries to escape the universe it has been trapped within, now unable to bear children, by dreaming a new one.
    A new dream of hunters, blood, and the infinite curse of beasts and humanity.
    Ironically, the only soul to ever escape this, is the one name named "the bearer of the curse."

    In my pov the dung eater's motivation is quite understandable, he's forcing members of the system that destroyed him and his kin to conform to his existance to be forever binded to him and his path. It's not even revenge at that point it become a way of life and thr meaning of existance itself after what he has been subjected to.

    TLDR; Shabriri is more evil than the Dung Eater.
    The twin themes of Elden Ring are the futility of the quest for immortality, and the inevitable consequences when advanced power meddle in the development of less advanced peoples.
    Whoever gathered together the motley assembly in the Roundtable Hold (be it Ranni or even Queen Marika herself) wanted no stone unturned, no options off the table. The aim was either to fix the mess that the Great Will (and its vassals) had made of the Lands Between, or sever the connection.
    The goals of Ranni, Fia and the Dung Eater are to leave the Greater Will’s machinery powerless over the world's inhabitants. Ranni’s methods are heroic, the Dung Eater’s vile, and Fia’s somewhere in between.
    Goldmask’s arrogance is that he can achieve the Greater Will’s aims better than the Greater Will himself, and the default non-quest ending is even less impressive, perpetuating the current, shoddy state.
    But I would argue that Shabriri’s is by far the greatest evil of all, since his goal is the unmaking all of creation, permanently killing all who have ever been born, and preventing any more souls from being born.

      There's also the out-there theory that the Formless Mother that Mohg worships *is* the Crucible, or perhaps the Outer God responsible for it. We know that Omens used to be regarded as sacred back in the age of the Crucible, Omen blood is important to the Formless Mother, and Dung Eater is trying to create as many new Omens as he can, believing it's his great destiny. Maybe this is all the Crucible trying to take control of the Lands Between back from the Greater Will, by both spreading her influence as far as possible, as well as having a new world order, the Mohgwyn Dynasty, ready to replace the Golden Order.

    He’s one of my favorite characters, and I think has one of the best endings, everyone will be cursed. No discrimination on who is “tarnished” and “noble” no more golden order sticking the omen into sewers which are absolutely terrifying. No more discrimination, between misbegotten, just cursed.

    Surprised you didn't cover the alternate option of turning the dung eater into your loathsome puppet. That's my preference and while it's a hassle to sidetrack Ranni's quest, it's worth it to enslave this rotten character. Doesn't hurt he's a bad ass summon to have on your side.

    • @square-table-gaming
      @square-table-gaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      He is a great summon but it basically just cuts off his storyline altogether so when you're talking about the story of the dung eater it's kind of anti climactic

    Congrats on the final spooky vid! I'll admit this video's Myuu song, "Cursed Stories" was one that took a moment to recall. Good choice, per usual, since Dung Eaters story is all about Seedbed Curses. I'm guessing the usual bgm will be returning next month?
    The thing that I found interesting is how his final words are very similar in wording to the Hamlet's curse upon the Hunters of Bloodborne. They both curse "...Their children. And their children's children too."
    "Curse the fiends, their children too. And their children forever true."

    So in theory, does that mean that the only way to save the souls trapped in the dung-eater would be to do his ending? Because, since he's a tarnished, if you don't do his ending and kill him he'll just be reborn with the souls still inside of him.

    • @square-table-gaming
      @square-table-gaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Not necessarily, tarnish that no longer see grace can die and return to the earth tree. Technically the best way to go about ending the dog eaters quest is to just straight up kill him because that would send his soul along with all the ones he has eaten back to the Erdtree
