    Thanks for the test. I've decided to go with Everclear for my stove. The fact that I can drink it is worth the added cost for my bug-out gear, imho. If the SHTF and I need a pain killer or mood enhancer, I can at least take a swig from my fuel bottle. May not be a good way to conserve fuel, but maintaining high spirits (pun intended) is important, too :)

    I just did this same experiment with my trangia stove, I looked your video up after and I found that your results are similar to mine. Everclear boiled water faster and burned longer. With the added benefits of the Everclear it's a clear new choice for me.

    Does burning the Yellow Heet create nauseous fumes... like if a person were to use them in a Trangia in a less ventilated area?

    Everclear is drinkable, add it to powder Gatorade and filtered water for something at nighttime. You can use it to sanitize and to clean wounds. You can also barter with it if need be. I would also rather everclear spill in my pack then heet🤷‍♀️ so it’s more versatile.

    Thanks for the comparison. Have you compared the BTU difference between Heet and Everclear?

    I go with everclear. I would rather cook with something I can consume if I chose too rather than some kind of chemical. Nice video!

    I wonder the difference between Everclear 190 and Everclear 151 (which is what is available in MY State)?

    • @timothysmith7059
      @timothysmith7059 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      151 has more water in it and you would not get as good a burn.

    When I use my alcohol stove (homemade, pop can style) using HEET for fuel, it makes the water taste and smell awful. What am I doing wrong?

    I wonder if it's safe to store the stove in the pot after burning Heet or does it leave poisonous residue behind. I also Wonder if Heet has any long term effects on hikers who use it as well as a negative impact on the inviroment.

      In my research on yellow HEET, it is almost all methanol with apparently some trade secret small percentage of other additives, presumably to help in its primary function as a fuel line cleaner. As I understand it, methanol will burn off or evaporate completely and won't absorb into the metal burner/stove. Who knows about the other additives in regard to whether they leave a residue. Effect on the environment might be small if dumped on the ground, since it most all evaporates so quickly. Effect on people, hikers, could be very bad if a spill occurs in the pack or while preparing food exposes the methanol to the skin or digestive system. I have personally taken quite seriously the TH-cam comments I have seen from chemists who say methanol is some very nasty stuff, like on the order of a gram's exposure can be bad. Wash spilled HEET off the skin immediately, or like me just don't use it long term (I tried out a couple bottles early on in my building/buying alcohol stoves).

      Oh, and an alternative that I have been using with a substantially lower risk is Klean Strip brand Green Denatured Alcohol. The MSDS indicates something like 90-95% ethanol (like Everclear, grain alcohol), but they make it poisonous so that people do not drink it, since apparently people are irresponsible. They have a few percentage points of methanol (

      @@ryanotte6737 and yet I feel way more sick off denatured alcohol! Just getting a quick smell from denatured alcohol burning or unburned is just poisoning to me. With heet I don't get that effect at all. I'm not saying heet isn't poisoning to your system, I'm just saying I don't have near the I'll effects from it. Did you also know that denatured alcohol changes from batch to batch and can contain up to 80 percent methanol. Buy one batch of it and then buy a different batch from somewhere else and you will smell the difference between the two. There's absolutely nothing safe about denatured alcohol. It just to unpredictable

    • @ryanotte6737
      @ryanotte6737 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@terryshrives8322 Yes, denatured alcohol is not safe, as it does contain some amount of poisonous methanol, but it is safer than HEET which is almost purely methanol with slight amount of additives for automotive applications. In any case, I have since bought a couple big bottles of Everclear (95% ethanol, 5% water) for decent price when I travel in a next door state that sells it readily.
      If a child or person accidentally takes a swig of the HEET (pure methanol), then the effects can possibly be blindness, organ damage, or death. Taking that same swig of denatured alcohol would reduce the damage/risk depending on the safer ratio in the product (like the 5-10% Klean Strip Green). Taking that same swig of Everclear (pure ethanol) has no lasting effects other than that major burning sensation and some buzz, haha.
      Your personal reaction to HEET versus ethanol should be the opposite, because methanol fumes can be toxic if taking in enough while ethanol fumes are harmless. The byproducts from burning both are the same, though, just different ratios of carbon dioxide and water vapor.

    For the medicinal benefits *aside* from being an excellent fuel source, I think the choice is, ahem, Ever-clear for me :)
    Thanks for the video! I think Everclear is definitely worth the extra cost!
    EDIT: Also, please *DO NOT USE* alcohol to "stay warm" - it actually has the opposite effect and lowers core body temperature while only making you *feel* "warm" :<
    The Mythbusters did an episode on this, I'd recommend checking it out :)

    i figured those yellow Everclear flames would be cooler, thus would take a lot longer to boil the water. i also wonder if the grain alcohol (yellow flames) produced more black soot. interesting

    I don't know why it would make the water taste any different. I would assume that you have the smell of the heet in your nose that tricks your taste buds when drinking the water. If that makes sense... Try stepping out into fresh air and clearing the smell out of your nose before drinking the water.
    That's my best guess

    Not only is it safe to drink it is safer if it leaks in your bag, can be used to clean wounds, can be used to extract oils for making ointments and salves, used in recipes. For camping or backpacking Heet really only has 1 use, making fire. The only drawback is the price and it does have 5% water.

      Heet carries this warning: California Proposition 65 : This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.

    • @MrDravous
      @MrDravous 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      "and it does have 5% water"
      it's not actually possible to get it any higher than that. if you had 100% alcohol in a vacuum as soon as you opened it, it would absorb moisture from the air until it settled at 5% water again.

    both of them have an alcohol smell to them if you stand right over it. Neither makes the air "smelly". I did the tests in my basement and didn't notice any major change in the air smell. So I don't think it will bother you at all outside in the open air.
