No wonder so many top guys want to wrestle for PSU, they have the best head coach in the country in Cael, and the kids obviously love wrestling for the guy. Guys that go to PSU improve immensely under Cael's excellent staff's tutelage. I remember seeing RBY when he first started wrestling at PSU, and when I look at him today his improvement is staggering. I think Cael is better than Dan Gable was and I am not saying that to get on Hawkeye's nerves. If I was a top kid today and Cael came along I'd definitely sign up for the NCAA Champ experience :D By the way I'm an old Okie wrestler and am not a PSU fan per se.
RBY's defense is amazing now. When he was in high school and as a freshman at PSU, guys were getting in on him often. RBY is so good at detecting the least opening in his opponent, and then he is on him quick.
Collegiate wrestling and wrestlers have evolved a lot since Dan Gable coached, even in that relatively short time. Comparing Cael to Dan Gable isnt a fair or wise assessment given all the variables and how the sport has changed in its popularity and exposure. The sport has grown a lot since then....its a different world now. Training techniques have evolved, nutrition strategies has changed, because the sport has grown theres a lot more talent out here as demonstrated by so many schools becoming contenders and competing with the best of the best. Trying to say Cael is better coach than Dan Gable is like trying to compare Lebron James of today to Pete Maravich of the 60s. You cant ...theres too many different aspects and the talent level has expanded and the sport itself has evolved too. It used to be only the midwest had most of the talent...now its everywhere.
I bought the Ultimate Guide to the College Wrestling Season last year and it is a great wealth of knowledge and reference to the wrestling season. I will get it again. Thanks for putting it together for The Fanco Fanatics!!
Josiah, I think you may have done this topic before but maybe a refresh: what are the best college wrestling rivalries and the refresh might be, given this seasons schedule drop and the make-up of the teams, which are the best, most competitive rivalries we’ll see this season?

I think it's cool PSU is scheduling so many Pennsylvania schools! Love the great intrastate rivalries in our sport: OU/OSU, N Iowa/Iowa/Iowa State, etc. Great for the sport!
If you're going to wrestle at this level and expect to get much better than you were when you won a state title in high school you have to go to Penn, Oklahoma or Iowa. ANY other school and you're cheating your future self! Yes - there have been a few exceptions - Dake went to Cornell - but Dake is a smart guy and probably would have done well anywhere. Big Red had less than 10 NCAA champions before Dake.
