Assalamu Alaikum, The Muadthin (person who says the call to prayer) holds his hands up to his ears when he calls the athaan because the Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him held his hands up to his ears when he called the athaan. Muslims are told to follow the actions of the Prophet Muhammad and that is why the muadthin today holds his hands up to his ears when he call the prayer (athaan). Well in the old times when there were no speakers, to raise the voice they used to hold their hands up. Although now there are speakers but they still do it so the tridition remains

If you look where the cabins are you can see the muaddin. There is a apart if you look you can see the muaddin.The cabins are mostly big.Under that cabin is where the imam stands in Ramadan.
