      I think that was one of the biggest killers along with the kimi thing. Susie standing up to Angelica had so many benefit for all the kids involved INCLUDING Angelica. Teaching her not to be sneaky or mean or go to far with the babies or others, to share, i could go on. And those are just a few of the benefits to Angelica ALONE. Much less when the other kids are involved. Just a fucking waste sigh

      @@smb. That's one of the biggest things that makes me hate the reboot. Susie was a smart, witty, confident, and kind role model for the babies. She was like the only one who could foil Angelica's plans and outsmart her. She always stood up to Angelica and often got back at her for bullying the babies. She had a strong will and sense of justice that could overcome Angelica's manipulative, selfish, and bossy attitude. Removing her as Angelica's foil is like making Perry the Platapus just a pet. They removed everything that made Susie such a great character and she became just another generic baby. It massively hinders the show as a whole.

    Kimi was such a good influence on Chuckie. He felt that he had to be the big brother he needed to be, which helped him to be brave at times. On top of that there were so many sweet sibling moments between the two that it made me forget they weren't actually related by blood. So taking that completely away is just... No thanks. For me anyway. There's so many confusing changes for seemingly no reason... If anyone enjoys this show, that's awesome. By all means, continue enjoying it. But for me personally who grew up with the original that ended in the mid '00s... This Rugrats is just no longer canon to me lol. That's just how I feel anyway. @Cklert 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I don't agree with the changes they did to Kimi and Suzie.
      But if I am going to be completely honest and fair, Kimi was never an interesting character to the cast. She was essentially just the girl version of Tommy. She served to develop Chuckie as a big brother.
      But here's the issue; we already had a big brother character through Tommy and Dil. A lot of the later episodes of Rugrats just end up reusing the same narratives that they did earlier. Instead of Tommy being jealous of Dil, Chuckie was jealous of Kimi. Instead of Tommy trying to learn responsibility, it's Chuckie. The biggest issue is that they seem to keep forgetting these lessons because we get repeat episodes of Tommy still learning to not be jealous.
      I would have enjoyed any change with Kimi into making her a more interesting character. But just having her switch roles with Suzie is lazy.

    • @consumeroftoons2119
      @consumeroftoons2119 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@Cklert They haven't switched roles. It seems that way if you watch the one clip where she's first introduced, but if you watch the episode from start to finish, while she's confrontational with Angelica at first, she becomes more amenable to her like in the old show towards the end.
      But yeah, the people complaining about this change forget that she was criticised during the original show's run for being a "female Tommy". By having her depicted as a year older, it gives the writers more of a chance to flesh her character out beyond that.

    • @CaliburnClarent
      @CaliburnClarent 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I kinda like the idea of Kimi being older. However, I dislike making Suzie younger and removing what made her character interesting.
      I'd much prefer the idea of an Angelica, Suzie and Kimi trio. The idea of the three girls having their own dynamic and adventures would help make the reboot feel more distinct beyond arbitrary changes.
      I feel it would be interesting to also have Kimi eventually become Chuckie's step-sister, so they can still have a sibling dynamic. It would be interesting to see Kimi acting as a caring big sister to her younger step-brother.

New gen kids with no knowledge of the original show will probably like this just fine, but theres no way you can enjoy this if your actually aware of the masterpiece that came before it. The 3d on its own is bad enough, not because its 3d, but because of how BAD the 3D is. Like it doesnt have to be Pixar or Disney lvl good because that'd take a ton of money, but even the Amazing World of Gumball has better CGI characters than Rugrats do and Im pretty sure Nick isnt THAT broke that they couldnt afford decent software and ppl who actually put some effort into making this show, especially a childhood classic look good. If I saw this as a child I'd be terrified of these characters ngl, they give serious uncanny valley vibes with Kimmie being the WORST of them all. On the note of how much they changed in regards to this reboot; it seriously begs the question of - if they were going to change most of the characters _this drastically_ why not just do an original show instead of rebooting the Rugrats? Because seriously, the only reason they're using the Rugrats IP is just for attention that they don't deserve.
    The problem with this Reboot is that by trying to make a "modern day version" of Rugrats, it's _immediately_ going to date itself. The "technology crawl" in the original wasn't meant to reflect reality - it's meant to either show characterization or how wacky and fantastic technology in this world could get.
    Example; Stu keeps coming up with insane inventions for relatively simple things, while Grandpa Lou can't even work a Calculator.
    The original show may have landlines and box televisions and no video games, but that's going to be far more _timeless_ than this show that has cellphones, livestreams and flat-screens - because stuff like that gets replaced every six months. The technology is no longer part of the fun or characterization - it's just _there_ because it "has to be."
    And another fault I see with this show is the fact that each of the changes to the adults feels like a _political statement._
    In the original, Lou was a World War II vet - literally a part of the greatest generation...and yet was so incompetent that he ended up sleeping through key points of the war.
    Here...he's a _hippie._ So instead of being someone who fought in war, he's been reduced to a beatnik who complains about War.
    In the original Stu was a bit of a man-child, yes; but his immaturity as an adult fueled his creativity for his inventions and why he was able to come up with a lot of fantastic ideas. (His big problem was trying to sell those ideas as toys, when he could've patented whole new forms of engineering.)
    But now, his "Man-Childness" has been interpreted into being a Gamer. And that disappoints me because his immaturity isn't being used for creativity but instead showing a stubborn refusal to grow-up and mature. And worse, Di-Di seems to have devolved as well, considering that she's trying to be a live-streamer.
    I think the less said about Betty, the better. I don't have a problem with Betty being a Lesbian in this series; heck I'm sure at some point most of us assumed that she was in the original. The problem comes in when you consider that in order for Betty to be brought "out of the closet," a character _had to die._
    The show conveniently handwaves the existence of Howard - Phil and Lil's father - and treats him like he never existed. Therein lies a problem when you want to reinvent a character to fit a political ideology and then have to literally axe whatever relationship they may have previously had; they're trying to fit a square box into a round hole - and the way they did it was by shaving off the corners and edges until it just barely fit.
    Now of course we don't know the context of where Howard is; maybe he and Betty got divorced when she realized she was gay; though I don't see why Betty should be allowed sole or full custody of the kids when her being Gay is neither his fault nor reflective on his ability to be a good father. Though if Howard does make an appearance, I highly doubt the movie will explore the nuances of being a single divorced father who is most likely being alienated from his children by the mother. Maybe Howard and Betty ended on better terms than that; but I can't help but feel the implications there would be that she'd be using him just to have children and ditched him when she got what she wanted. Who knows, maybe the best outcome for Howard in this really is to be dead.
    And then there's the fact that they switched Kimmie and Susie's ages...It made sense to drop Susie down to the Baby's age-group, so that she'd be less able to protect the other kids from Angelica. But with introducing Kimmie, it was like they realized too late that they put Susie into Kimmie's role and now had no place for her. So now they could only put her in the one place they could. I am a bit curious if in future episodes they will reveal that Chaz has secretly been dating Kimmie's mom and wants to marry her, just so Chuckie and Kimmie will be step-sibs again.
    Also, none of these characters work in 3D- their heads look too wide and too round. Let's hope that Dil doesn't make it into the show because he will look _terrifying._

      @@consumeroftoons2119 Many of the writers are the same but the reboot clearly had a lot of input from the higher-ups at Nickelodeon. They completely changed many characters personalities and major aspects from the original series that just make this reboot feel like nothing but a cash grab. They made Betty a lesbian even though she was happily married to Howard in the original series and the spin off All Grown Up, which took place 10 years in the future. It wouldn't have been an issue if it was implied in the original series that Betty wasn't attracted to Howard and they were friendly co-parents in the reboot but that wasn't the case. They just got rid of Howard and reinforced the stereotype that if a woman is a tomboy, she has to be lesbian. The change to her sexuality was definitely just to check the box of "gay character" for the sake of 'diversity'. They made Didi just a generic mommy vlogger even though her overly worried personality made her make some hilarious decisions in the original (her obsession with Dr Lipschitz). They changed grandpa Lou's entire backstory from a retired WWII veteran into a hippy, which did nothing but essentially make him a different character. They made Susie younger less intelligent, confident, and witty. She is basically just a generic baby now even though her being able to outsmart Angelica was what made her interesting. They reduced Kimmie to a side character, changed her age for no reason, and made her not Chuckie's sister. This takes away a lot of Chuckie's character development as an older brother and now he doesn't have a mom. Stu was originally a hardworking inventor, who did have a bit of a childish side, but he did his best to be productive and succeed. Now he is much less of a hardworking inventor and more of a very childish man who just wants to play video games and refuses to grow up. They didn't even ask the original adult voice actors to reprise their roles. Instead they highered completely new ones who sound nothing like the originals. This is a big problem because a character's distinct voice is a huge part of what identifies them in animated shows. They completely changed the artstyle to a cheaper looking 3D but didn't bother to make a lot of the character designs look properly like the 2D designs. As a result there is always something off about the way that characters look, especially the adults. They also changed the time period from the 1990's to 2020's and made modern technology more of a focus than it ever was in the original. This takes away a lot of the timeless charm of the original series. The only thing that is relatively consistent is the story structure for the babies' adventures and even that was hindered in the reboot. As stated, Susie's introduction to the original show was very significant because it introduced a new and interesting dynamic to the babies' relationship with Angelica and the adults. She was older so she could communicate with everyone. This meant that she was actually a threat to Angelica because she could put a stop to her plans by either outsmarting her or telling the adults about her. With Susie there, it meant Angelica's schemes would have to be more creative or she would have to figure out a way to distract Susie. Sometimes the babies could even get revenge on Angelica with Susie's help and she actually got punished for bullying. Now Angelica has no foil at all and the protagonists (babies) are nearly powerless against her. Honestly none of the changes the reboot made helped the show and they were so drastic that it barely even feels like the same show. If they wanted to change so much, they should have just had new baby characters and the babies as their parents.

      @@AuraKumo104 Alot of your assumptions are based on the misinformation that has carelessly spread around it. Nickelodeon was not culpable in the writing decisions that went on during the production of the reboot, the writers brainstormed these ideas themselves. In contrast to what some believe, this isn't in the same continuity as the original show. While yes, most of the original players are back, it's a reboot structured along the lines of "DuckTales", where it has some similarities to the original show, but has it's own continuity that departs from the old show. The writers had to go this route, because while the bulk of the current Rugrats fanbase consists of adults, Nickelodeon's demographic is 6-11. If they jumped right back into where the series left off, today's kids would get confused, and lightening probably wouldn't have striked twice. The Jungle Movie (while it was great) performed well with adults, but underperformed with the 6-11 mindset.
      Most of the changes are exclusive towards the adults, since the babies themselves, and Angelica haven't really changed much, beyond switching Kimi and Susie's ages. The media storm regarding Betty's sexuality change was mainly stirred up to outrage conservatives, and garner a repeat of the Elmer Fudd controversy. The show really doesn't make a big deal out of her sexuality at all, or hardly even mention it, nor does she act stereotypical. Most of the Rugrats team suspected she was LGBT, even when the original show was in production, they just couldn't outright depict it, since society was alot more prejudiced towards LGBT representation in the 90s. You also have to keep in mind that alot of people who work on Rugrats are LGBT themselves, and they approved of this change. It wasn't done with malicious intent, or to be "woke". Howard isn't gone from the show either, the second batch of episodes have hinted towards his reappearance, and there is a plan for all of this.
      Some of the adults had to be retweaked, because many of their personalities in classic Rugrats reflected Baby Boomer/Gen X parenting styles. The reboot is set in a floating timeline as you've said, and in order to make the reboot resonate with a modern day audience, they've had to change some of the adults' occupations to better depict parenting situations today. If they kept their occupations from the 90s/early 2000s, it would feel stuck in the 90s, and wouldn't resonate nearly as much. Didi is still high on edge in the reboot, and Stu still is an inventor. They've just made him a gamer in conjunction with his enthusiasm for inventing (One of the storylines for the new Rugrats shows highly revolves around an invention Stu built that goes horribly wrong) They didn't mitigate the impact of "Rugrats in Paris", because this continuity is separate from that of the 1991-2006 series. Kimi is a side character right now, because they're reestablishing characters in different ways to make it stand out more from the original. If they reintegrated them the exact same way, it'd be accused of rehashing the same material, and that's not what people come to a reboot for. To recapitulate what I said, the crew do have a plan in regards to renewing dynamics. Kimi isn't Chuckie's stepsister yet, but that doesn't mean she won't be later along the line. She wasn't immediately Chuckie's stepsister during her introduction, and came in later towards the series' run. We're only 13 episodes in. It's a 26 episode season, with an additional second season coming.
      The character designs are consistent of that of the original series, but some of the characters' noses had to be reworked in order to make these designs translate better to 3D, since they have a huge workaround. "Rugrats" has a wonky artstyle, it's a trademark of the show's look, so naturally, the 3D aesthetic would emulate that. Modern technology was obviously going to be introduced, since it's common for reboots, or new episodes of shows from the 90s and 2000s to feature newer tech, but it's only when it becomes the main source of the writing, that it becomes a problem. It's hardly the main selling point, and when it is featured as part of the plot, it's mainly used to support it, not the tour de force. I was apprehensive about Susie being aged down, because I was concerned about her no longer being Angelica's adversary, but not long after I started to watch the reboot, I saw that Susie being aged down slightly doesn't hamper her character in the slightest. She's still resourceful (A major trademark of her personality in the new show, like the old show is her intelligence), confident, stands up to Angelica, and makes clever remarks. The only change is that she's non-verbal to the adults, so that she's included more in the show's plots, and she wouldn't be able to inform the adults on Angelica's schemes. She continues to be Angelica's foil, and is the one baby (Second in command to Tommy if you will) that isn't easily deterred by Angelica. Basically the same, minus the ability to talk to the adults.
      The crux of the show is experiencing the world for the first time thru a baby's experience. Portraying the babies as 30 year old parents raising their own children would meddle with the original Rugrats' vision. So, it only makes sense that they're still babies in this version.

    • @consumeroftoons2119
      @consumeroftoons2119 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're not playing musical chairs, and playing role reversal just to make changes for the sake of it. The writers are wise enough not to do that,. Susie's character is unchanged from what it was in the original, with the only changes being that she's a year younger and can't talk to the adults. That's to bring in larger writing obstacles, because if she tattled on Angelica, then the story would be over and done with and make things too formulaic. Susie's original personality is preserved, but with some extra dimension to her personality because she's a main character now.
      Susie wasn't above having naive moments in the original, and hung around with the babies more than anyone else her age except Angelica. So this change has more merit than one would think. Kimi hasn't replaced Susie, but she's been aged up a year to permit her to have her own character beyond being near identical to Tommy like she was in the original. Making her Angelica's moral guardian, someone who believes in her but wants her to make wise choices, is a wise evolution because she employs the qualities people liked about her before, but with the chance to disentangle by having a singular personality.

Susie was originally made to be the niceness to bounce off from Angelica's bratty personality. As far as Kimi being Angelica's age also feels odd to me too, She felt like she was made to give Chucky a little step sister to later look up to Chucky in All Grown-Up. I think they are making Kimi and Susie switch roles of Kimi being the nicer older kid who the babies hang out with. Maybe Kimi will still become Chucky's step sister but having her as the older one will just still seem weird

    • @Sanakudou
      @Sanakudou 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I get the feeling that making Suzy younger was to have a consistent non-white character, which wouldn’t bug me at all except the fact that they switched her out with Kimi who is Asian, does being a pale non-European now mean you don’t count as representation? Her addition in the original series was so important in terms of representation, even more so the fact we got a bi racial marriage and step sibling representation, if she doesn’t end up being Chucky’s step sister they’ll have written out the shows preexisting diversity. Asians seem to get their representation taken away a lot nowadays, which doesn’t make sense if representation is the goal, why not push for equal representation rather than having to choose between coloured characters as if there can only ever be one.
      Suzy was also a great character to challenge Angelica, if they wanted her to be in more episodes for representation they really could have just done so without the role/age swapping, I loved Suzy’s and Angelica’s dynamic, it was also nice to see a healthy “big sister” archetype that wasn’t antagonistic like Angelica, interacting with the babies. The girls watching got an aspirational female character through her too. But even if they kept the changes to Suzy, at least don’t take away Kimi’s role, just have them both there! Double representation, why would they not prefer that?
      As for Betty, her relationship with Howard was already good representation of how a married couple didn’t have to fit the assertive husband/submissive wife trope, we had a strong and openly feminist female who was more masculine in appearance and attitude with a soft, sensitive and reserved husband of a small non-masculine stature. I agree it’s an awful (and lazy) way to bring lesbian representation into a show by always choosing the most masculine female. Not all lesbians are masculine. So I hope that’s not the show’s intention - perhaps they’re going to go down the separated parents route, but even that is erasing the idea a non traditional gender dynamic can exist healthily in a marriage.
      When rebooting a show with iconic, pre-established marriages there’s not really room to bring lesbian or gay representation via those characters without the destruction of those marriages and/or complete erasure of an existing character, especially ones that are already progressive representation in their own right. Is that REALLY the only way to add representation? It shouldn’t be. Really good writers and character designs could bring in lgbt+ representation via new characters without it being out of place.
      Besides, this show and it’s characters was so diverse for its time, if not still more diverse than most modern shows. This reboot could do lgbt+ rep on top of that diversity if the creators truly felt it required it, it’s just a shame if they decide to do it via Betty instead of new characters.

Betty and Howard were my favorite couple out of the adults because Betty and her empowerment and assertiveness was awesome to see juxtaposed with her husband's more mild and meek nature. They both were breaking gender stereotypes while being supposedly straight, which just showed that even hetero people don't HAVE to be the typical gender-conforming normies that they're expected to be. And really, it would have been great to see a hetero male character who was allowed to be "effeminate" without being made into a joke or a gay stereotype. Not to mention taking the most non-feminine female character in the show and just being like "welp, OBVIOUSLY she has to be a lesbian now" comes off as reductive and insulting. They could have just as easily made any of the other female adults lesbians -- why Betty? Is it just because she looks "butch"? Hmmm....
      It's very obvious the showrunners just wanted to score points with certain groups without actually giving a shit about what they're actually doing or the messages they're sending. Very cringe. Honestly I think it would've been a better idea to make both Chas AND Kira gay. They could've had an entire arc where the other parents are trying to get Chas back into dating again, thinking he's straight, and he ends up on a date with Kira, who is also closeted, and over time they become best friends and come to terms with not being straight together! They could help each other go on dates and have a special bond as the only 2 single parents in their friend group. Basically they would both fill the missing roles in each other's lives without being a traditional hetero married family unit. Would've been much more interesting than what they actually did.

    I've had a strange relationship with this reboot.
    Growing up, Rugrats was always "that one show" to me.
    That one show that stuck with me.
    That one show I never stopped watching.
    That one show I would watch again if more came out.
    But when the reboot came out in May this year, I just....didn't.
    Apart from not being subscribed to Paramount+, the fact they removed Kimi and Kira was more disappointing than I expected.
    While I admit Kimi was a Tommy clone, and Kira didn't have much of a character, it means that my favourite Rugrats movie, focusing on my favourite Rugrats character, never happened.
    It was released in cinemas. When a regular cartoon made it onto the big screen back then it meant something.
    I don't think people HAVE to be married, I don't think children NEED and Mum and a Dad, they have Betty to represent single parenting, so why take Chazs' wife away?
    If the next set of episodes are made, Kimi becomes semi-regular, and Kira makes an appearance, I'll subscribe and watch it. Who knows, maybe their romance can happen over multiple episodes and have time to develop. A viewer can dream.

      Addition: Given the preschool Kimi went to, if they make Kira a stereotypical Asian parent, something is going to be broken.

      Kimi wasn't a Tommy clone though and I don't know why people say that. She never had a screw driver in her nappy and she wasn't the strong leader that Tommy is.
      To me Kimi is a bit more optimistic of people than Suzie, since Kimi would sometimes side with Angelica. Though unlike Angelica, she doesn't mean to be bad, she's just having fun. Kimi also has a sensitive protective older brother to help her get out of trouble.
      This is why the dynamic is ruined in the reboot, since younger Kimi works better than older Kimi.

    • @consumeroftoons2119
      @consumeroftoons2119 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was Nickelodeon's decision. Originally, the reboot was going to be done in 2D, since it was greenlit during the Sarah Levy interrim. But when Ramsey Naito became VP of Nick Animation, she thought the switch to 3D would make the reboot more attractive to today's kids. At first, Eryk Casemiro and Kate Boutilier (the reboot showrunners) were unsure of it, but once they found models they thought would stick, they ran with it.

      @@remixchild Back in the 2010s, there were plenty of people who asked for a Rugrats reboot, and when the initial announcement was made in 2018, there was alot of hype. Even early this year, alot of people were excited for it. It was one of the shows that was high in demand for Nickelodeon to bring back.
      Recapitulating what I said, this was the best route they could take. Since the original show did just about everything it could do, having a continuity reset was a sensible choice, because when you reboot a show like "Rugrats", you've got to take into account that the 6-11 mindset is unfamiliar with the original show, and if they followed on from where it left off, it might be lost on them, since there's 9 seasons of worth of catching up on. It would be a repeat of "The Jungle Movie" underperforming. (Even though TJM was good)
      It worked out in the long run, since they changed some of the adult characters in order to fit within the 2010s timeframe, but kept the babies mostly the same, and the writing consistent. Appealing to both sets of audiences, without relying too much on nostalgia, and staying true to the original vision of the show. Which is the best way to reboot a classic show.
