Buy Greek Red Egg Dye- amzn.to/423kdZX
Dyeing Easter eggs red is probably one of the most well-known of all Greek Easter traditions. They are traditionally dyed on Holy Thursday and then cracked on Easter. I have a special trick to making sure they achieve the deep burnished red color that you see here, they come out perfectly every time.
    Makes 12 Eggs
    Timing: 10 minutes prep, 20 minutes cooking/soaking
    Ingredients
    12 brown eggs
    4 cups water
    1 cup white vinegar
    1 package red egg dye
    Drizzle of oil
    Instructions
In a large pot, add the water and bring to a rolling boil. Once boiling, add the eggs and lower the heat to simmer, cover the pot and let cook for 15 minutes.
Once finished, add the eggs to an ice bath and let cool for at least 5 minutes.
While the eggs are cooling, make your red dye mixture.
Using a glass measuring cup, remove one cup of the hot water. Carefully pour in the red dye, and mix well with a metal spoon (if you use a wooden spoon, it will dye your spoon).
Carefully pour concentrated dye mixture back into the pot that you used to boil the eggs.
Using a large metal spoon, carefully place the hard-boiled eggs to ensure that you don’t splash the water. Let them soak for 5 minutes.
When ready to remove the eggs, line a plate with paper towels. Carefully remove them from the pot and place them to let them dry. This is very important to ensure you don’t ruin your counter tops with the dye!
Once dried, gently cover the eggs with oil to ensure that they stay shiny and also to preserve the dye on them so it won’t rub off on your hands later.

I have been dyeing red eggs for Orthodox Easter for many years, but I can assure you that they have NEVER turned out as beautifully as they did today (Holy Thursday 2023). In the past I varied what I did, but the results were always somewhat blotched or too light or in some way not what I wanted. Today I followed your instructions TO THE LETTER and they are absolutely gorgeous! Thank you! I'll never do it any other way again.

The symbolism of dying eggs red on the Thursday before Easter, is that the blood of Christ was shed on that Thursday. The Armenian Church follows many of the Orthodox traditions.

    Hi Nikki: Kalo Paska!
Thank you for this tutorial. I am Greek and I especially enjoyed this! You manner is direct, pleasant, and sincere, which is why all the world love Greek people.
This is the first year I am going to attempt to dye my eggs deep red. My mother when she was alive, used white eggs which accounted for them not being dark and vibran
I purchased my Greek dye from Amazon, AND I purchased 3 dozen brown eggs from Trader Joe's so I am all set for this coming Holy Week.I got my olive oil too and so I am good to go.
Once again, evfaristo para poli yia to thaumasio sas mathima ... for those who don't know Greek: "Thank you very much for your wonderful tutorial.

Where I live now, we don't have egg dye, so, instead I had to resort to food colouring and they have finally come out with nice red colour.
I have tried with curcuma, onion peal, beetroots, black tea but they would always come out depressing and with odd colours.
To get a shine my grandmother would rub them with some oil and clean off the access.
    World is small. Many blessings.

Nice! Just for the hard boiling part: If you have a steamer basket you can just bring .5-1" of water to a boil, place your eggs in the steamer basket and drop it in the pot for 9.5-11 minutes. No cracked eggs, always perfectly cooked. 9.5 minutes will leave a soft but mostly set yolk, 11 minutes will be fully cooked.

I used the greek dye, brown eggs etc. The brown eggs make the difference...BUT, last year I used the dried skins from yellow onions to make my own dye and ysed white eggs. I got the darkest red and most uniform red eggs I have ever seen. Also the dye does not come off. If you refrigerate dyed ehgs and later take them out, you'll end up with red fingers. I'll never go back to the dye.
