I have been dyeing red eggs for Orthodox Easter for many years, but I can assure you that they have NEVER turned out as beautifully as they did today (Holy Thursday 2023). In the past I varied what I did, but the results were always somewhat blotched or too light or in some way not what I wanted. Today I followed your instructions TO THE LETTER and they are absolutely gorgeous! Thank you! I'll never do it any other way again.
My grandma always dyed Easter eggs on the Thursday before Easter but she never mentioned being Orthodox Christian. thank you. You reminded me of my childhood Easter.
The symbolism of dying eggs red on the Thursday before Easter, is that the blood of Christ was shed on that Thursday. The Armenian Church follows many of the Orthodox traditions.
There are traditions in each Church group...American Orthodox,Greek, Russian Syrian...etc. you don’t need to follow any particular groups ways. Big T traditions are different and unchanged .
Thank you thank You thank you! Finally!!! I’m not Greek, but married to one and I’ve NEVER been able to get my eggs red! Your little tips and secrets helped so much. Kali Anastasi!
I just started this special tradition my family does! My yiayia tried teaching me but it is a little hard from her since I don’t speak as much Greek. The steps were simple I was managed to make tons of eggs and my yiaya was very pleased!
Enjoyed your video. I used to be in charge of dyeing eggs for our Church’s Easter celebration. After trying many dyes, I finally found the same Greek Dye you use. Worked perfectly! However, we had to do 1000 eggs!!!! It was quite a production!
Hi Nikki: Kalo Paska! Thank you for this tutorial. I am Greek and I especially enjoyed this! You manner is direct, pleasant, and sincere, which is why all the world love Greek people. This is the first year I am going to attempt to dye my eggs deep red. My mother when she was alive, used white eggs which accounted for them not being dark and vibran I purchased my Greek dye from Amazon, AND I purchased 3 dozen brown eggs from Trader Joe's so I am all set for this coming Holy Week.I got my olive oil too and so I am good to go. Once again, evfaristo para poli yia to thaumasio sas mathima ... for those who don't know Greek: "Thank you very much for your wonderful tutorial. Yiannis
I’m currently in my kitchen waiting for the water to boil and I’m going to follow your method! Fingers crossed it works :) it’s my first time dying eggs by myself x
Where I live now, we don't have egg dye, so, instead I had to resort to food colouring and they have finally come out with nice red colour. I have tried with curcuma, onion peal, beetroots, black tea but they would always come out depressing and with odd colours. To get a shine my grandmother would rub them with some oil and clean off the access. World is small. Many blessings.
Always use brown eggs for any Easter egg and your eggs will always be a darker hue of color, except for yellow dye. You can also use any red food dye for this recipe, use 20 drops of the dye.
Thank you woman! I never, i guess, did them right. lol, They always came out weird looking. Thank You!!! They came out PERFECT!!! WOW!!! Xristos Anesti! for the future!!!

Nice! Just for the hard boiling part: If you have a steamer basket you can just bring .5-1" of water to a boil, place your eggs in the steamer basket and drop it in the pot for 9.5-11 minutes. No cracked eggs, always perfectly cooked. 9.5 minutes will leave a soft but mostly set yolk, 11 minutes will be fully cooked.
Do you shine the eggs with olive oil?? I may dye red & green eggs for Christmas...to place on or along a braided Christmas bread: with maraschino cherries & pine sprigs😊❤
need to update: I succesfully did that in past it was beautiful rich red but now when I tried to reproduce it I failed, the color got too brown, so caution it's not that reliable :D
When you take them out of the fridge how do you keep the dye from getting on your hands? My eggs always sweat after they come out of the fridge and everyone's hands are a mess! Any tips??
I know, I never know how to deal with this either. I might make them Saturday so I don’t refrigerate them for Easter, I don’t think they go bad the first 24 hours.
I used the greek dye, brown eggs etc. The brown eggs make the difference...BUT, last year I used the dried skins from yellow onions to make my own dye and ysed white eggs. I got the darkest red and most uniform red eggs I have ever seen. Also the dye does not come off. If you refrigerate dyed ehgs and later take them out, you'll end up with red fingers. I'll never go back to the dye.
I really appreciate your video first, video quality so amazing and your recipe just awesome, perfectly cooked and wonderful presentation wish you good luck grow more. I made jelly egg for Easter and posted in my channel, I look forward to your support
11 minutes of my life have gone irretrievably to this video that makes science out of a simple process like hard-boiled eggs and coloring like I’ve been doing since I was twelve.
You can use normal food coloring but I haven't been able to get them to turn as red as the Greek dye. Another solution is to use beets, you can boil beets and use the water to dye the eggs. Follow my other instructions with beet water. Good Luck! Christos Anesti!
Hi Kelly , You can find it in Greek stores if you have near you , or you can search online for Greek Easter egg Diy . they are usually more potent than the rest.
You can use any red dye if not able to find it, 20 drops of red dye - neon works great also, & remember to use the brown 🥚 eggs or you won't get the red dye. Adding a little extra white vinegar and hot water to dye, with hot eggs also helps a great deal.

Nice. I prefer pastel colours to dye my eggs for Easter.
Colored eggs are very pretty but we do the red to honor the blood Christ spelt for us.
You mentioned about egg coming out if you crack it at 1:55. Nothing will come out if you put some salt in that water. :)

So the water is still warm when you add the vinegar? Right?

If you use naturally brown eggs and boil them with onion peels you will get the same deep warm red without need to seek the special dye :)
need to update: I succesfully did that in past it was beautiful rich red but now when I tried to reproduce it I failed, the color got too brown, so caution it's not that reliable :D
never got a rich red this way... the color got too brown

Get cheap eggs and don't refrigerate them. We don't eat them. Only for the cracking.
Molim vas prevod
do you ever use cheese cloth? I've heard to use cheese cloth when dying eggs? Great recipe. Will dye 2 dozen eggs tonight? Kalo Paska koukla!
Tip without food color..
Use the red peel of onion just put in a hot water and vinegar put the egg overnight organic color is better
Red and blue eggs are essential in Hungarian tradition also
Thank you for watching
Instead of using dye use onion skins, from yellow onions then add vinegar, let sit after you boil them with onions.
Don’t the eggs crack when you take them out of the hat after their hard boiled and you put them directly into the cold they won’t crack?
I used the greek dye, brown eggs etc. The brown eggs make the difference...BUT, last year I used the dried skins from yellow onions to make my own dye and ysed white eggs. I use onion skins often, but that gives brown, not red. :)

Hello, what is the name/brand of the red dye that you use?
You can search for Lithari or optima . But any Greek Dye will work
