- Described by the Boston Globe as "Thrilling" "Brilliant" and "Intrepid", this concert footage comes from Boston's self-conducted chamber orchestra, A FAR CRY's 2009-10 season opener, "The Lunatic" at the inimitable Jordan Hall inside New England Conservatory. Alfred Schnittke's haunting first Concerto Grosso for 2 violins, harpsichord, prepared piano and 21 strings was performed on the night before Holloween. A Far Cry is joined by the Uh-Mazing violinists, Nelson Lee & Meg Freivogel of the decorated Jupiter Quartet as soloists, along with Andrus Madsen pulling a double guest duty on harpsichord & prepared piano. Next year he’d be 90. In an alternate timeline, he’s still alive as Gubaidulina is, creating many more fantastic works, sharing his wisdom with the world. I’m hopeful next year marks a revival of his music.
this piece gave me faith in modern music. I used to think dissonance was just for the point of originality and not actual musical experience, until this.

One of my favorite composers, one of my favorite pieces. My only complaint is the harpsichordist's interpretation of the one breath of fresh air Schnittke offers. In this performance the player tries to embody the erratic dissonance of which the composer is so masterful at articulating (almost as if the harpsichordist is saying, "ok, now it's MY turn to be crazy!"), yet he fails to realize the only way the outer lying bookends of the piece's polystylism succeed is in the dynamic created by the "banal", contrived beauty that is that measure. The entire piece is a masterful exercise in layered, almost juxtaposed textures. Your part in the "harpsichord cadenza" is to provide the relief between the peaks of orgasm. Without such a beautiful valley, the mountains mean much less

This is hardly a pretentious or flashy piece. This is just Schnittke expressing himself, while at the same time trying to remove the gap that separates 'light' and 'serious' music. What is so pretentious about semitone transpositions? I think the issue is not with the music, but with a specific collection of intervals that you find unappealing.

It's an annoying noise, string sawing.
After listening to this horror, I can now say that I have experienced the definition of Pretentious put into non verbal noise. This piece would best be used as sonic warfare. I will make that recommendation in writing in a few moments. I am not kidding.
